This is Jose Mourinho's 226th European game (including qualifiers and Super Cups).

For Jose Luis Mendilibar, two years his senior at 62, it is his seventh (including the Intertoto Cup.

Mourinho said: "I have had more opportunities to play in European competitions, but Mendilibar is of the same generation as me, with the same white hair. We are on an equal footing."

The media might portray Jose as a grumpy cynic, but boy does he know how to lead a team to glory! Up the Romans, from a Chelsea fan!

Sevilla were in relegation trouble until they appointed Jose Luis Mendilibar in March.

The much-travelled 62-year-old has never won a major trophy - and before this season his only European experience had been in the Intertoto Cup with Athletic Bilbao in 2005.

“Mistakes are what you pay for in games like this and it’s about making the fewest mistakes possible," he said.

“We’ve eliminated big teams, but the most difficult one is ahead of us. Whoever makes the fewest mistakes will win.”

First time I've ever heard a player say they have prepared for a game like a cup final... when it is a cup final. Usually you hear it for, say, the 33rd game of a 38-game league season.

Roma defender Gianluca Mancini said: "We prepared for this like a final. Finals must be played at one's best, with head, heart and grit. It's a different game.

"The path has been long, we are aware that we deserve it. In front of us we have a great team, we are aware of what we have prepared to play in the best way."

Roma and the city of Rome are in a complete trance before the Europa League final in Budapest. This is due to the almost mystical relationship Jose Mourinho has built with both players and fans.

Rome lives in a condition of mass hysteria since the 'Special One' landed in the Italian capital in July 2021.

That was a coup de theatre of the finest art - no-one expected such a high calibre manager and such a character to return to Italy after his successes and controversial moments at previous club Inter Milan, least of all depressed Roma fans.

Much has happened since then. Fourteen years after their last Coppa Italia title, Roma's captain Lorenzo Pellegrini lifted the Europa Conference League trophy to the Tirana sky last May, a first ever continental success for the club.

Two months later, in front of an ecstatic crowd, superstar Paulo Dybala was unveiled during an emotional night. Mourinho has been the driving catalyst behind the commendable turnaround.

With three European trophies up for grabs over the next 10 days, the very best of the coaching world will battle it out to add their name to a list of great managers who have preceded them.

Of the six bosses in the finals, only Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and Roma's Jose Mourinho have tasted continental success before.

That leaves Inter's Simone Inzaghi, West Ham's David Moyes, Sevilla's Jose Luis Mendilibar and Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Italiano all looking for their first European silverware as managers.

But which coaches have won the most major European trophies in history?

England striker Tammy Abraham is looking to become the first player to win the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. And he'd be doing it in successive years.

He won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2020-21, even though he did not feature in the final against Manchester City.
