England manager Gareth Southgate after England's 4-0 win over Malta, when asked about England's exploits at The Ashes: "[I've not spoken] to Brendon [McCullum], had a couple of meet-ups with Rob Key. The team have been playing pretty much solidly so less time to see Brendon. I don't know Brendon but I've been introduced to Rob. I'm a big cricket fan, it's something that's hugely exciting to watch at the moment. Their mindset has been great but they also have world class players. I would imagine it's the first team in my lifetime to declare at 393-8 on day one, so that would be an interesting decision. That's a clue as the the mindset they're going into the series with.

On whether that mindset can be translated from cricket to football: "They've been doing it for a few months and we've been evolving as a team as well. It depends what exactly you're looking at in terms of style of play, the players you're using. That's hard to align it [with football] because they have a lot more games a lot more time together. We look at what are the bits we can pick off and what are the bits that can be originally to your sport and what is going to help you win. They're all on the same page which in any sports organisation is crucial. This summer is gong to tell us a hell of a lot as to whether they are judged on an Ashes series in the same we we are judged at a Euros or a World Cup."

On Bukayo Saka's fitness: "Yeah he's ok. We didn't want to take any chances with the scoreline as it was."

More from Gareth Southgate on Trent Alexander-Arnold's future as a midfielder: "Inevitably a lot of what happens is going to be a little bit dependent on his club because the fact he's been playing there has partly helped his transition in that area.

"He's getting used to receiving the ball with his back to goal and in tight areas when before he was used to receiving on the touchline with the play in front of him. He was very comfortable doing that. I have no doubts in my mind he can do it, he's just learning some nuances without the ball.

"He's enjoyed the project, if you like. He has been excited by it and he showed exactly what we think he could be capable of. He gives us something different to our other midfielders."

England manager Gareth Southgate: "Of course we know we have the quality to win the game and then it's about the mentality. I thought that was excellent from the start. We have players that give you leadership on the pitch and set the tone and that's how they've trained all week.

"In particular, when we lost the ball the reaction to winning it back was a sign that we were there mentally and then some really good quality for the first two goals in particular. We've made it look straightforward when we know that isn't always the case. I'm very pleased with the night.

"We never know when we are going to have people available. There's always going to be that turnover of players with injuries so it's important the young players are comfortable and know the group. That is very important that we have those options."

More from England striker Callum Wilson speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We've not played as a team in a while and the Premier League ended about two-and-a-half weeks ago and we blew away the cobwebs during the week and put in a great performance against Malta.

"Any time you have away from the football field you're going to have a bit of rust when you come back to it but we managed to keep in shape and come back.

"The intensity of training is always high and the standard is really high."

On the penalty being given for handball against Malta: "I managed to get in the position and I see Phil Foden in the box and when it was blocked I was one of the first people to call for it.

"It was about a minute after the referee blew the whistle and we weren't sure what was going on as we didn't know if we had VAR tonight. I was happy to step up and take it and put it away."

England striker Callum Wilson speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It has been a wait. It's always an honour to play for your country and then to score it tops it all off really.

"It makes all of the hard work that you've put in to get yourself here worthwhile. Probably the only downside is that I didn't score more. I had a couple of chances today. But it was a great team performance.

"We were very clinical and ruthless in the first half and it kind of put the game to bed and then it gives players like myself an opportunity to get on the pitch."

England's Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking to Channel 4: "I enjoyed it. I love playing football and being on the pitch and representing my country. To play the full 90 minutes, I was happy. After the little break at the end of the season, it was about getting fitness back in my legs. I enjoyed it and I'll remember that one."

On his goal: "I think my first touch was a little bit sloppy. I wanted to hit through the ball but I've set it outside my body and I just thought 'go across the keeper'. As soon as I hit it, I knew it was going towards the goal."

Is this a position you can see your future in? "I don't know. I think potentially. I haven't played it too much but it feels comfortable. It feels natural, I will say that. It's somewhere I can see myself playing. I want to make sure I am regularly on the team sheet and today was a good foundation to build on.

"Hopefully I am one of those players that can be used in a number of positions. I'm not bothered where I play as long as I'm playing. No matter what position I'm playing in, I will give my all and try and win the game.

"Regarding England, the manager has always tried to find a way to get me into the team ands with the quality, of the players who play in those positions, it's been difficult to find that. I think the role I've been playing with club football, it's a new avenue. It's still early doors, it's only one match. But it's important that when I get the opportunity, I take it."

I'm glad that Gareth Southgate has tried it [with Trent Alexander-Arnold playing as a number 10]. Tonight it really worked and it will only get better. Having Trent on the ball and delivering passes is good for Harry Kane and England. We're in a good position.
