  1. 'The heartbreak makes it sweeter'published at 10:08 British Summer Time 12 June 2023

Manchester City fan Steven McInerney, host of the ‘Esteemed Kompany’ YouTube channel, speaking to 5 Live Breakfast this morning: "My voice is still trying to recover, my head won't recover, but I'm ecstatic. Absolutely incredible.

"I'm old enough to have seen it all, been down there, and that makes it sweeter. It is easy to say in hindsight, but all that Champions League heartbreak and semi-final exits made it sweeter. The absolute relief, we've had it pretty good over the last decade but it [the Champions League] being that one thing we couldn't get - we really 100% wanted it, so it is absolutely spectacular.

"Football is so cathartic at times, when you're in the crowd and everyone is your mate, it feels absolutely incredible. It sticks in your head forever. I found myself on the floor crying at one point, an absolute mess, but that's the power of football."

  2. 'Inter made it more difficult than people expected'published at 10:02 British Summer Time 12 June 2023

The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton speaking to the BBC 5 Live Football Daily podcast: "I think Inter made it more difficult for City than most people expected. It almost felt inevitable that City would win that game, but you get to half time, 0-0, City hadn't created many chances. Inter looked like they had a plan off the ball, they were frustrating City - they didn't look dangerous until the last 15 minutes when they had to throw everything at it.

"It's a weird one - we've talked for years about City being brilliant in European games and not being able to get over the line and win the trophy. This was one of their weaker performances but they come away with the trophy, so who cares?"

  3. 'Does this make Guardiola the greatest?'published at 09:56 British Summer Time 12 June 2023

The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton speaking to the BBC 5 Live Football Daily podcast: "Does this now make him [Guardiola] the greatest coach we will ever talk about? I think certainly in my lifetime. He has combined brilliant football with trophies.

"Does that put him ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson? He had far longer success at one club, it depends whether you value success at several clubs and creating dynasties at each, more than staying at one club and going again and again. I'm sure everyone in Manchester will argue about that for the next 50 years."

Big news out of Aston Villa this morning, with chief executive Christian Purslow leaving the club.

Purslow took over in 2018, when Villa were still in the Championship.

During the intervening period, they have got promoted, just avoided relegation, sacked Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard, appointed Unai Emery and qualified for next season's Europa Conference League.

In addition there has been a Covid pandemic to get through.

It is fair to say Villa are in a far better position now than they were when Purslow arrived.

City have won the treble, the domestic treble, got 100 points and won the league 3 times in a row and 5 times in 6 years. That's a run that no team can match in the history of English football. I don't think they have anything to prove...

  9. 'I didn't expect Haaland to score'published at 09:20 British Summer Time 12 June 2023

    David James
    Former England goalkeeper

Former Manchester City and England goalkeeper David James speaking to the BBC 5 Live Football Daily podcast: "I've done a lot of work on the Champions League, I looked at Inter and the way they defend - I knew it was going to cause problems, Kevin De Bruyne wasn't going to get the freedom, City were finding it difficult to make passes. But they weren't going to get punished too much, Inter didn't punish AC Milan apart from the two goals early in the first leg.

"I didn't expect Haaland to score, he's had a fantastic season, scoring 12 Champions League goals - but only three away from home. He's 22 years old, he's going to get better, he'll score more away goals and the chances of them winning another Champions League are quite high."

  10. 'City regularly replace the irreplaceable'published at 09:17 British Summer Time 12 June 2023

    David James
    Former England goalkeeper

Former Manchester City and England goalkeeper David James speaking to the BBC 5 Live Football Daily podcast: "There should be a succession plan for whoever comes in next, whether it's for Ilkay Gundogan if he goes. I'd like to think Pep has a plan going forward. The next signings won't be the most expensive, but they will push this team to the next step which will be a double-treble, or dare I say a quadruple.

"As soon as City bring a name in, like Aymeric Laporte or Ruben Dias, they are immediately compared to one of the City legends, the guys with a statue outside. They establish their own personality, and they've won the treble, something the other guys never did. City regularly replace the supposedly irreplaceable.

"After the game, the emotions of all the players were on a par. In the changing room there are no superstars. That makes City very difficult to defeat, they are all equal. So anyone they recruit has to be equal with all the people they are alongside.

"When I look at Scott Carson, this is the changing room. If he does not fit within this, he would not be there. It's a major achievement to have that medal, and is testament to what a great guy he is."

  11. 'City have great people working for the club'published at 09:11 British Summer Time 12 June 2023

    David James
    Former England goalkeeper

Former Manchester City and England goalkeeper David James speaking to the BBC 5 Live Football Daily podcast: "When I joined they had just got promoted, and never envisaged that it was going to be a Champions League winning side in 20-odd years.

"The ownership need to take credit for not only investing in Guardiola and a lot of players, but also investing in and rebuilding that local area. I loved City for the work they did in the community as much as the football, and now when I go back there is so much good work done. Aside from a great team they have a great group of people working for the club."

Who will stop City dominating the EPL like Bayern and PSG dominate their respective leagues? For City to be the greatest club side ever, back-to-back trebles or a quadruple would end that debate.

It's not been a bad six months for Julian Alvarez.

The Manchester City striker has booked his place in history as the first player to win a treble of European Cup, league and domestic cup - and a World Cup - in the same season.

Nine players before the 23-year-old Argentine forward had won the European Cup or Champions League and the World Cup in the same season - but none had won the domestic double as well.

Alvarez finishes the season as City's second top scorer with 17 goals, despite starting fewer than half their games, and was the third top scorer at the 2022 World Cup.

Lovely to read Gareth Southgate offer City his congratulations. When Pep won the treble with Barca, Spain went on to win the World Cup in 2010. When Bayern won the treble in 2013, Germany won the World Cup in 2014. Just saying.....

  16. 'That's why he is the greatest manager of all time'published at 08:41 British Summer Time 12 June 2023

    Pep GuardiolaImage source, Reuters

By any metric, Pep Guardiola is "the greatest manager of all time", and a second Treble with a second club simply underlines that status.

That is the view of European football expert Julien Laurens who told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast how he evaluates successful managers - and how Guardiola ticks every box.

"There are three criteria I use," he explained. "The number of trophies won, the style of play and how much he improves players.

"The trophies speak for themselves with Pep, as does the style of play, but almost all of the players here became world class after working with him

"That is something not many managers in world football can provide."

By winning the Champions League against Inter on Saturday, Guardiola added an English Treble to the Spanish one he achieved with Barcelona in 2011.

Former Real Madrid centre-back Jonathan Woodgate agreed on the City boss's status, saying: "He changes the way we look at football and does things that no one has ever seen before.

"He improves every player he gets hold of but not only that, he creates a really strong team unit.

"The spirit gets them over the line. When they needed that against Inter, they got it."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said his side's Champions League final win over Inter Milan that secured the Treble was "written in the stars".

Rodri's calm finish in the 68th minute was the only goal on a hot night at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, as City became only the second team to win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in the same season - emulating arch-rivals Manchester United's 1999 achievement.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Guardiola said: "It's so difficult to win it.

"You have to be lucky. This competition is a coin.

"It was written in the stars. It belongs to us.

"We weren't at our best level. After the World Cup, the team made a step forward and we were there. It wasn't our best performance.

"I don't have any energy to think about next season, it's impossible. We need a break. It's too long.

"Our players have international games now. Uefa and Fifa, think about it. The Premier League finished two or three weeks ago, now people have to come back. It's too much.

"We will start from zero next season.

"We're going to celebrate in the hotel with family and friends. Monday the parade is in Manchester. With this competition, the Treble is so difficult."

Your views bannerImage source, BBC Sport

We asked you for your thoughts on a historic achievement for Manchester City.

Here is a snapshot of your views:

Kit: Fantastic night in Istanbul and City proved they know how to win, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Ruben Dias and Ederson stood up in particular. The scenes at the end with Gundo in the stands were very emotional and may be his last moment for the club. A special team and night…thank you.

Alan: An average performance but who cares! Awesome Ederson, Dias and Stones (again). Everyone exhausted. What an achievement. Forza Pep!

David: I have been a City supporter since 1947. What a result - fantastic. Was in tears at the end. Whatever luck there was in the last 15 minutes was well deserved. Now for my next 20 years...

Heather: Waited so long, suffered so much, so well deserved. As a Man City fan for many years, I'm over the moon for the team and for us the true supporters of this absolutely amazing team. They left it all on the pitch and truly deserve the success they are having now after so many years of hurt and pain. Well done Man City.

Nich: It was never about the performance - it was about getting the job done. Not choking and not making unusual team selections. Inter came to stifle the team, which was high pressure. But the better team ultimately found a way and that’s what great teams do.

Nathan: I think I screamed the street down! I was so happy. Just seeing it all come together and a masterclass Ederson performance meant so much! Hopefully more trophies to come!

Manchester City were welcomed home by fans as they arrived back in the UK from Istanbul on Sunday after winning the Champions League for the first time.

Pep Guardiola's side beat Inter Milan 1-0 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on Saturday to complete the Treble.

Thousands more are expected to line the streets in Manchester city centre for a victory parade on Monday.

The City squad will travel in an open-top bus through the city, before a stage show takes place with Guardiola and his players.
