Manchester City
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden to BBC Sport: "It was the first game at home. We wanted to start in the right direction. The performance was top. I enjoyed being home. The fans were brilliant from minute one and it lifted us over the line.
"I feel I created quite a few chances for Erland. He was unfortunate not to score. I played more inside. You create more centrally. I'm happy with my performance. I want to keep going in this direction with high standads I set myself.
"Julian, when I see him in training, he's always got this striker's instinct. He's ruthless. I was so happy for him that it went in.
"A player like Kev is so hard to replace. He's one of the best in the world. When you miss a player like that it's a very big blow. When we step up we do the job as well.
"We knew the opponent we were facing, how good they are. They're a fantastic team. They're very physical and seem to win every second ball. The performance was so high."
FT: Man City 1-0 Newcastle
Manchester City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Sport: “There are no words to express my gratitude for the performance we gave. It was really, really good.
"It is the second game but after what we done in the last season, we are still there.
"We spoke about mentality. The reason we won was about our mentality and we proved it again.
"Phil [Foden] is a reality as a player. He can play many positions. He is a real threat. I am really pleased. The way he behaves with everyone. The mentality is always there. That is the most important thing."
FT: Man City 1-0 Newcastle
Newcastle recorded just one shot on target, their joint-fewest in a Premier League game under Eddie Howe.
FT: Man City 1-0 Newcastle
Manchester City
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to TNT Sports: "No words. Where we came from, the success after the last gane in Athens, that's the reason why we are a very good team. The talent, how they follow us, still they have the desire to do it.
"To come here against that team everyone saw against Aston Villa it as magnificent.
"The way we played it was more than deserved. Everyone was a top performer.
"Now a long week to rest a little bit and prepare for the future.
"Everyone is fantastic, what can I say? It means a lot to all of us."
On his conversation with a fan: "He said to me 'make a sub', I said come sit here and do it. The game was in a good tempo, a good rhythm. I didn't see the players too tired. It wasn't easy to make the changes so I didn't do it."

Julian Alvarez has been directly involved in 20 goals in his 26 starts across all competitions for Manchester City, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists.

City conserve their energy at the right times. Rodri and Mateo Kovacic dictated the tempo, they looked relaxed and they were never rushed.
FT: Man City 1-0 Newcastle
Manchester City didn’t make any substitutions in a Premier League game for the first time since May 2022 (against West Ham).
It was just the sixth time in 268 league games in charge of the club that Pep Guardiola hasn’t made any changes.

Newcastle United
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Sport: “Mixed [thoughts]. I thought there were some good bits. We had moments we could hurt them but didn’t have our quality. The second half was much better.
"There was a moment around 60-70 minutes in and I thought we could get control but they are a very good team and played through the press a few times. They strangle you with the ball to a degree. You tire yourself out getting it back and with fatigue the decision making goes slightly.
"There was an element of that but technically we were not where we needed to be. Collectively we were slightly off.
"I was frustrated we didn’t create more. The last pass was missing and we had a couple of shots from range but nothing glaring and that’s the frustration.
"We knew the start would be really difficult. We are confident and believe we can win anywhere but we need to bring our A game and we didn’t have that today."

Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on TNT Sports
Everyone said this was an opportunity for Newcastle. But it shows how good this City team are; they can hit you when you think you're in the game.
FT: Man City 1-0 Newcastle
Newcastle United
Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier to TNT Sports: "First half we were sloppy in possession. We tried to go after Manchester City but we need to be more consistent.
"We kept going and trying to find the equaliser but it wasn't to be. Phil has too much space in the pockets. There's a lot to work on. This is the level we want to be at,
"With the pace we've got there's always going to be a chance. The lads gave everything as always.
"We didn't drop our heads at 1-0 down. Some teams come here and lose two, three, four, five. We didn't concede again."
FT: Man City 1-0 Newcastle
Newcastle United
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to TNT Sports: "It was a tough game as we knew it would be. They're an elite team. We tried our best to execute our plan. We did better in the second half but when the moments came we weren't clinical enough.
"The second-half showing was much better. There were moments we looked good fitness-wise but technically we weren't at our best.
"We really wanted to be ourselves but didn't execute it properly."

Manchester City
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji speaking to TNT Sports: "It felt amazing. Newcastle are a great team and it wasn’t easy against them. We did a good job. With the game in Greece the recovery was not as planned and it’s still early but showed a great game today.
"Always as defender it is good to keep a clean sheet. With the ball we played great. Overall we did great and I can’t remember 100% any chance of theirs.
"With John Stones' injury I had two or three training sessions in there and I’m starting to feel pretty comfortable now but I think it’s the fifth position I’ve played in this team now.
"Phil [Foden] is so good with his back to goal. He moves between the spaces as we saw again today and I hope he continues doing it this season."
