Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It can happen in football, I am really frustrated for the result but not for the performance. The performance was very good. We made some crucial and important mistakes in the first and third goals but it could happen. We could be more clinical in the first 20 metres but when you conceded the first goal, the space becomes smaller and it is more difficult.

"Congratulations for West Ham. I don't know if they had a plan because we lost the ball and then I don't understand what happened with [Adam] Webster and [Michail] Antonio but it was a very strange goal.

"I'm very proud for the performance, the attitude, the passion, the mentality to play well and get points. I can analyse how we conceded the goals and how we made a lot of mistakes in the last 20 meters and how we conceded so many counter attacks but it is not a problem. We will start on Monday working on the last week.

On adding to the squad if possible: "It's not my business, I want to think only of my job. My job is to be a coach, give organisation and ideas. We have to understand that we have the target, fix the target and then we can speak about everything."

West Ham’s James Ward-Prowse has been involved in at least one goal in his last four Premier League appearances at the Amex (three goals, two assists).

Only Mohamed Salah has had a longer run of appearances with a goal or assist at the Amex in the Premier League (five in a row), including Brighton players.

Pascal Gross became Brighton's top Premier League scorer with 27, overtaking Neal Maupay and Glenn Murray, who both scored 26.

West Ham completed 102 passes in the second half by the way.

West Ham completed just 31 passes in the first half of this match – since Opta records began (2003-04), the only team to have fewer in the first half of a Premier League game are Watford against Portsmouth in November 2006 (30).

West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I'm thrilled with the three points because we have not won for years here. It's been the same coming here and not getting the results. Today was a well deserved three points and Brighton did a good job but we also did a good job in other parts of the game.

"Brighton have got an extremely good manager and his side are causing problems to plenty of teams, not just us. We worked hard on not getting picked off easily and we defended really well.

"Our counter-attacks were really good. Two or three years ago we were really good on the counter and we showed that. All the forward players had a really good contribution today.

On Edson Alvarez: "We know that he'll get better as time goes on. He did a really good defensive job without the ball. Today was about coming away with points so I was really pleased for Edson. Tomas Soucek went off injured and we were losing bodies in the middle of the park."

On starting Alphonse Areola: "I have got two number one goalkeepers and we just thought it was time to give Areola the opportunity. He had a couple of brilliant saves today and he had some great saves against Chelsea last week so long may it continue."

On the signing of Mohammed Kudus: "I don't want to talk about players who are not at my club yet but I do believe that he that he came in for a medical today but I couldn't confirm at the moment how that went or anything else. What I do want is competition and thinking about pushing on again, having a go and playing against the top teams, trying to do well."

Roberto de Zerbi’s 35 Premier League games in charge of Brighton have seen 123 goals (70 for, 53 against), an average of 3.51 per game.

That’s the highest average goals per game ratio of any Premier League manager to manage 30+ games.

West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to Sky Sports: "First of all I need to say well done to the supporters and the club because it's been a long time since we've beaten Brighton. We've had some sore results here in recent years so today made up for that. Great effort from the players. We had to change a few things to get a result here. Brighton played very well with the ball but we were very good on the counter attack and took our chances.

"We defended very well today. We had to defend a lot. Let's not kid ourselves, it is a part of football and it is not all about attacking. The last couple of games, we have defended really well as a team."

On the note passed to Jarrod Bowen before he scored: "I just wanted to change the set-up in midfield. I wish it had said something else. I thought his touch looked incredible. To keep the ball and get it down and then finish it off."

On Alphonse Areola: "He didn't half pull off a couple of worldy saves. I am really pleased because we really needed him. Hopefully we improve and the football gets better. We are certainly getting the confidence because of the results. We've had to go away from home and the team we've had have been tough. The players have done a good job. Hopefully, we can introduce some new players."

West Ham boss David Moyes says Mohammed Kudus had his medical today - although doesn't know how it went yet.

The Hammers have agreed a deal to sign the 23-year-old Ajax and Ghana midfielder for 44.5m euros (£38m) plus add-ons.

Jarrod Bowen didn't score an away goal in the Premier League for West Ham last season.

He has two this campaign already.

Bowen has been involved in five goals in his last five Premier League games (three goals, two assists).

West Ham United

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "A lot of effort went in the game plan, you have to respect Brighton. We executed our game plan perfectly today.

"We denied Brighton space and were compact and clinical today. Mentally is the challenge when you haven't got the ball. We had the composure to make the most of our chances when we had them. Many players stood out for us today and gave us a boost."

On settling in at West Ham: "It's been fantastic, I can't speak highly enough of the fans and the people that have helped me settle in as quickly as possible and when that is taken care of, you can just perform on the pitch."

This was Brighton's first Premier League defeat by West Ham. They had won six and drawn six of the previous 12.

The Hammers' last win over Brighton was a 6-0 success in the Championship in April 2012.

West Ham United will end the night top of the Premier League for the first time since 28 August 2021.

It is only the 13th night that manager David Moyes has ended at the top of the top-flight (four with Everton, two with Manchester United, seven with West Ham).

West Ham had just 21.5% possession in this match but won 3-1.

Since 2003-04, that is the second-lowest possession figure by a team who scored three Premier League goals.

Newcastle netted three against Manchester City in May 2021 with only 18% - but lost 4-3.

West Ham United

West Ham striker Michail Antonio, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's up there with the last week, the same tactics. Chelsea had a lot of possession last weekend and Brighton had a lot here. It was about how we were going to deal with it and counter them. The tactics worked perfectly.

"We kept in our shape perfectly. One thing they wanted to do was come out of pockets so they could find them. But we stayed narrow, stayed tight, showed them outside. They crossed a lot of balls and created a lot of chances. Alphonse [Areola] was unbelievable today. When we had opportunities, we took them.

"Brighton always have a lot of possession. They are a quality team and the way they play their football is quality. they are always pushing and challenging teams. But we did our jobs and got the three points.

"I am going to be positive that I got a goal, but it should have been two today.

"This shows we have good character, are resilient and don't concede too many goals. That is one thing David Moyes has always tried to do with us."

A Premier League signing has just gone through and no surprise who has made it.

Even less surprise if I tell you it's a seven-year deal with the option of an eighth.
