SMS Message: Salford did well and fair play to them but how did Darlow not save his penultimate penalty? Although I'm not a Leeds fan, thankfully, I was even annoyed lol! from Anon

  3. 'You have to put the ball over the line'

FT: Salford 1-1 Leeds (9-8 pens)

    Leeds United

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke speaking to Sky Sports after the game: "It is football. You have to use your chances. It felt like we should have scored 10 goals today.

"It is football so congratulations to Salford. I can't complain too much about how we played, the lads did really well and created so many chances against a fantastic side.

"You have to put the ball over the line and this was the only thing missing - the cutting edge.

"It is always difficult to turn a game. I like that we stayed calm and did not panic. We should have won the game comfortably but you have to put the ball over the line and sadly we missed this quality.

"We are disappointed because we would have liked to have gone onto the next round and had a proper cup run. It is not a time to punish the lads because performance wise I cannot accuse them."

On potential signings: "It is not our style to comment about rumours and players under contract elsewhere. My full focus today was on this game."

  4. 'I would have to say Manchester United in the next round'

FT: Salford 1-1 Leeds (9-8 pens)

Part-owner of Salford City Gary Neville speaking to Sky Sports after the game: "It is not a job commentating on football, it was enjoyment [tonight]!

"I have watched every Salford game for four years and a lot of the games before that. I love watching them play sometimes you lose and you feel gutted and I am pleased for everyone at the club tonight.

"Nicky Butt [Chief Executive of Salford City] who has taken over and Neil Woods the manager.

"The penalty shootout was heartbreak for us against Stockport [last season].

"It is a big moment for the lads, a lot of them were here last season."

On Salford City's form: "Away from home we are fantastic, at home we don't seem to do the same things as away, I think if this can give us confidence at home it will give us a real boost."

"League two is such a difficult league, there is nothing like it. It is so unpredictable and it happens all the time we have fallen short of that. Luton got stuck in League Two for four years and that is the ambition for us, to get out.

"I mean this year it seems to be a perfect storm of the club's [In League Two], we have been the biggest budget for the past few seasons but this season we might not be in the top four it is that competitive. It is hard work to get out of it.

On who he wants next round: "I would have to say Manchester United.

"Us lads as owners of this club it is our club we love Man United and we love this club as well we are hugely ambitious of what this club can be.

"To have the opportunity to play them and here at this ground is the special nights that we want."

SMS Message: Glad to be out of the League Cup. It’s a tiny trophy that only papers over the cracks (United last season). The same fans that always say ‘Spurs haven’t won a trophy since 2008…and even then it was only the League Cup’ are now the ones saying it’s embarrassing that we’re out of it? We’re a new team that is still getting used to a completely new system. Now we have more time to focus on the League and more time for our players to properly recover between games - the number of injuries already this season shows how brutal the schedule can be, and with only a small group of core players now, it’s essential we keep them fit. from Joey, West Sussex

  6. 'We will take on anyone'

FT: Salford 1-1 Leeds (9-8 pens)

Salford boss Neil Wood, speaking to Sky Sports: "Playing against a really good team that causes a lot of problems. We tried to play a little bit, we knew they would come at us aggressively with their pressing. We had to weather the storm a little bit, we had to defend well. We got it towards the draw in the 90 minutes and we know more than anyone it can go either way in the penalties, we were on the wrong side in the play offs but on the right side here.

"There were some really good penalties. It followed on from the Preston game where there were really good penalties.

"I said to the players it was one of the best teams we will come up against. If we can defend like that and take it into the league, we have more chance of stopping the goals going in. We know we can create and score."

On who he wants in the next round: "I am not sure! You always want to play against the best teams, we will take anyone."

Anon: Some real nonsense on here from some Spurs fans, panicking over the result tonight. Fulham are a good Premier League team and we have no right to assume we should beat them. Let the new manager get on it. He could do no wrong at the weekend, tonight he has made dreadful errors. Please grow up!

Ashley on taking a penalty and the retake he had to take: "It it something we practice, but I had a lot going through my mind I had to keep a cool head and slot it through."

Cairns: "When it goes down to penalties for me it is time to to express myself and we are all delighted it is unbelievable for them [Fans]."

Ashley: "Of course we know what we are capable of and we have to take this win into the league and keep the momentum going."

J: Don't understand why Spurs didn't put out a stronger team in the first place. They were playing a good team, and don't have European football so its not like rotation was necessary? A chance to win a trophy when you haven't for quite a few years? Makes no sense!

  11. 'A big night for all these Salford City fans'

    Salford 1-1 Leeds (9-8 pens)

    Gary Neville

Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

Absolutely incredible, I would have never imaged this game to go so far never mind to go to penalties and to win.

Leeds are a huge club in this country.

Alex Cairns [Salford City Goalkeeper] the hero, such a big night for all these Salford City fans.
