Southampton's Nathan Tella's sterling strike (skimmed off Adam Armstrong's head) is the difference in this one.

The visitors look like the stronger side so far.

But don't rule out Sheffield Wednesday, they've had a couple of chances going forward and looked dangerous. They just need to get more players in the box to maximise their chances.

Cleared off the line - that should be 2-0 and that would have been a perfect time for Southampton to get a second goal.

They are getting closer, but it is still only 1-0.

Failed to mention this chance from Saints earlier, my mind was boggling somewhere else (he says frantically typing).

James Ward-Prowse steps up and swings the ball in over the wall and toward the top corner but it's easily saved by the Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 45 mins +1

    Sheff Wed 0-1 Southampton

Wednesday's Julian Delgado is booked for bringing down a Southampton player on the far side edge of the box.

Didn't look like much but the replay shows he slightly stood on the Saints player's right foot.

Free-kick from a dangerous spot here.

Just a few minutes left and Southampton are threatening to score another before the break.

Wednesday have everyone back to defend.

We've got six minutes of stoppage time. Wow.

Who likes stats? I do ....

So far, Sheffield Wednesday have had five shots on goal compared to Southampton's eight.

More to come later. If you're lucky.

Southampton just holding the ball up around midfield.

Just over five minutes left of this first half.

Will we see another goal before the break?

    Sheff Wed 0-1 Southampton

Wednesday try to catch Southampton on the hop again and Callum Paterson collects the ball on the far side of the pitch in acres of space.

He whips a long and high cross into the box but again there are too many Saints defenders back to clear.

It falls for Tyreeq Bakinson, who shoots from distance, but it sails wide.

  10. 'A one-sided picture'published at 20:38 British Summer Time 4 August 2023

It's been 21 players in the Sheffield Wednesday half - that's been the picture of the game so far. Everyone except the Southampton goalkeeper.

It's not a boring game, even though it's one-sided. The passing in little triangles is creating space and they have been creating chances.

J Staggs, High Wycombe: Football. Is. Back. Wow. It didn't take long to get me back in the groove. What a match and what an atmosphere

Aaron in Southampton: This game reminds me of the song 'Pure Shores', because it's All Saints. I'm here all week...

    Very good, Aaron, very good.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 31 mins

    Sheff Wed 0-1 Southampton

Wednesday's Callum Paterson goes into the referee's pocket pad as well for bringing down a Saints player on the far side edge of the box.

Free-kick for the visitors from a dangerous spot.

    But... it comes to nothing.

Just under 15 minutes left of the first half.

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 28 mins

    Sheff Wed 0-1 Southampton

Southampton's Adam Armstrong and Wednesday's Lee Gregory have been booked for separate offences.

    I can't lie ... I missed the Armstrong booking - apologies.

But Gregory was seemingly booked for lashing out and clipping a Saints player's heels and taking him out (looked a bit soft though).

The Southampton goal has been given to Adam Armstrong, who got a bit of skin on the ball.

Nathan Tella's shot skipped off his head and flew into the net. Sneaky.

  15. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

    Sheff Wed 0-1 Southampton

Carlos Alcaraz picks up a loose ball five yards outside the Wednesday area, puts his head down and steams forward past a couple of defenders to the edge of the box and pulls the trigger.

His low fizzer goes just wide.

New Owls boss Xisco Munoz has asked fans to be patient whilst his side get to grips with life in the Championship.

In the neighbouring dugout, Saints manager Russell Martin recently said something similar warning supporters that they would not be 100% come opening day.

Talk about getting your excuses in early.

    Here come Wednesday.

A cross is swung into the Southampton box but cleared.

The Owls don't have enough attacking players forward.

But they do like that right side of the pitch with Juan Delgado and Barry Bannan - maybe an area they feel they can exploit?

Southampton are passing Sheffield Wednesday to death here.

Especially on the right-hand side, some of the football is such high quality.

Southampton are so good with the ball. It's not complicated, it's simple, but so good.

Kyle Walker-Peters (in his bright pink boots) feeds a looping ball to James Ward-Prowse on the nearside edge of the box.

The Saints captain crosses the ball first time but there are three blue and white shirts there to clear.

A nifty little partnership down this right-hand side early.
