Sulaimon Adelekan: Nathan Tella continues from where he stopped last season with Burnley in the Championship. Brilliant lad!

Paul: Southampton far too good for Sheffield Wednesday so far. But then they should be with the players they’ve got. They really should go straight back up.

Glyn: Incredibly unfair to the squad, the fans and the manager for Southampton to have so much potential unfinished business hanging over them.

It's not doing them any harm so far, Glyn. Early days though...

    Sheff Wed 0-1 Southampton

What a start from Saints who look like the slightly better team at the moment.

They're holding on to the ball well and winning it back when they lose it.

But Wednesday looked pretty dangerous coming forward on the counter earlier, they've got some juice.

A beauty from Nathan Tella, who receives the ball on the nearside edge of the box, calmly looks up and curls a left footer into the top left corner of the net to put Southampton ahead.

Replays show Tella's shot flicked off the head of his Saints team-mate Adam Armstrong, who may well try to claim that.

Either way, Sheffield Wednesday need to gather themselves.

That's the first goal of the 2023-24 English club season, folks.

Southampton living dangerously in their own penalty area.

Sheffield Wednesday with a low stinging cross from the far side, which is picked up and fired on goal - but charged down by a Saints defender.

At least three more shots are fired off before the ball falls flat.

I think the most important thing for Southampton is you've simply got to get out of this division.

Burnley played good football and had a big back four and showed how to do it last season. You can go up playing good football. I love this formation and I am looking forward to seeing it.

Mark, Cambridgeshire: Big game for Saints tonight, playing the team directly above us in the table. Hoping for three points.

Good point, Mark, it's a big one - both sides will want to get further away from that bottom three...

James Ward-Prowse has been strongly linked with a move to West Ham in the Premier League but interest may have cooled in recent days

Many thought Southampton's talisman Ward-Prowse would have been poached by a Premier League club already.

There have been plenty of reports out there linking him with a move away, with the needle pointing most strongly toward West Ham.

But the 28-year-old midfielder remains in Saints red and white.

BBC Radio Solent's Southampton commentator Adam Blackmore can shed some light on why he hasn't said farewell yet, read more here.

Sheffield Wednesday's new manager Xisco Munoz (left) and Southampton's new boss Russell Martin (right) both arrived at their respective clubs mid-summer.

Tonight’s Championship curtain raiser features two sides who were two leagues apart last season.

Newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday and relegated Southampton are both under new management.

Both will want to get off to a winning start and both have different points to prove.

The Owls, before a home crowd at Hillsborough, will want to show that they can pick up where former boss Darren Moore left off and that they belong in the second-tier once more.

Meanwhile, Saints will want to prove to fans that they’ve peeled themselves off the canvas, patched themselves up and are capable of winning matches again.

This... is going to be interesting.

New Southampton boss Russell Martin has taken a player-focused approach that is high on energy, since arriving at St Mary's from Swansea

When Russell Martin left Swansea for Southampton mid-summer he said the opportunity was "too good to turn down".

He said one of the biggest challenges when arriving at St Mary's would be getting the players to "believe in themselves" again, after getting relegated from the Premier League.

Has the the 37-year-old's positivity and energy rubbed off on the squad? Read more here.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz got Watford promoted to the Premier League in 2020-21 but was fired by the Hornets after just seven games in the top flight

At a guess, I would say new Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz is out to prove a point this season.

The 42-year-old Spaniard led Watford to the Premier League in 2020-21 but he was sacked after just seven games in the top flight after a slow start.

Whether he has a chip on his shoulder or not, he says he is just happy being back in English football.

You can read more about his return here.

Sheffield Wednesday fans make their way to Hillsborough where their Owls host Southampton in the first game of the new Championship season

Xisco Munoz sticks with the core of last season's promotion-winning Sheffield Wednesday side, with Barry Bannan, Josh Windass and Lee Gregory providing threat going forward.

Chile international full-back Juan Delgado makes his debut.

The standout Southampton news is that captain James Ward-Prowse starts. The England midfielder has been linked with a move back to the Premier League but wears the armband.

Full-back Ryan Manning is the only new face in a starting XI which includes Kyle Walker-Peters and Nathan Tella - Romeo Lavia, who's been heavily linked with Liverpool, is on the bench.

Sheff Wed: Dawson, Paterson, Iorfa, Ihiekwe, Famewo, Delgado, Bakinson, Vaulks, Bannan, Windass, Gregory.

Southampton: Bazunu, Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Stephens, Manning, Smallbone, Ward-Prowse, Alcaraz, Edozie, Tella, Armstrong.

    Guess who’s back, back again?

English club football is back, tell a friend.

(Da-da-da, da, da, da, da, da, da)

    (Da-da-da, da, da, da, da)

It’s been 67 days since we last had EFL football.

Over the last two months we’ve seen hirings, firings and a boat load of transfers being unwrapped like tasty treats to drive excitement for this new 2023-24 season.

Some loaded teams will be feeling confident and believing this will be their year to close in on the Premier League.

Others looking for a fresh start with new managers will be looking in the mirror like Junior and Yul Brenner in that scene from Cool Runnings, pumping themselves up.

Inevitably there will be a few who’ve not quite made the grade this summer and are already feeling nervous about the battle ahead.

But no matter which camp your team falls into, we all know anything could happen, and it’s OK to dare to dream.

    Welcome back, football fans.
