    Fantastic penalty.

She goes for the top right corner, and the net bulges as the ball flies in.

Fantastic composure from Steph Catley to put them ahead.

Steph Catley keeps her cool to fire home from the spot!

Catley had only scored three goals in over 100 international appearances before today but she puts away the penalty superbly into the top corner. No stopping it and Australia lead.

Sweet Caroline is belting out around Stadium Australia.

    Of course it is.

Also, the announcer has absolutely got the message about hyping the crowd - or has ingested a lot of sugary sweets. Screechy.

Jack: Could officials not just stamp out apparent time wasting rather than adding 15-20 mins of injury time every game?

Hearty cheers from the home fans as the referee blew for half-time - they remain very much on their team's side, despite the stalemate.

Australia manager Tony Gustavsson said yesterday that he felt they could punish Republic of Ireland in the latter stages. So plenty of time, but he will want an extra 10% from his team in the second 45 minutes.

Australia had 58% possession in the first half, but didn't do an awful lot with it.

  13. 'Australia trying too hard'published at 11:57 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

HT: Australia 0-0 Republic of Ireland

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the element of being the home nation and trying to push things is frustrating Australia.

They're wanting to put their best foot forward and put their best performance on, but they're forcing passes.

There's a bit of missed communication in terms of timing of runs and delivery of passes.

The team are just doing too much. They need to revert to their simple, good habits.

Cortnee Vine is again picked out down the left and she again feeds Caitlin Foord, who initially thinks about the shot but then tries to find a better angle inside the box and that allows the Republic of Ireland defence to smother her.

  16. 'Referee needs to manage heavy challenges'published at 11:51 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Karen Bardsley

There's an element of petulance here from Katie McCabe. These challenges from her have just started to add up now.

It is the referee's responsibility to manage those situations, because if you don't nip it in the bud then it will just keep escalating.

We certainly don't want to see anyone either stretchered off or sent off.

Another Australia set piece is dealt with by the Republic defence as Steph Catley's delivery is headed away.

The Matildas scored in the first half of every group match at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups but look set to be frustrated for the first time in a while today.

Oohs and aahs around Stadium Australia as the big screens flashed up that VAR was checking for a penalty.

Cheers from the Irish fans as the referee waved to play on, check complete.

All a bit frustrating for the co-hosts thus far.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Republic of Ireland tonight after their last warm up match against France, but I have been impressed.

I think their manager Vera Pauw will be very happy with what she has seen.
