It is great that come the third game of the group that neither match will be a dead rubber, Nigeria v Republic of Ireland nor Australia v Canada, the Irish can still have a say despite being out.

England, who will face someone from this group if they qualify from theirs, just need to control the controllables and focus on Denmark.

  3. How Group B stands...published at 13:21 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

After that epic performance from Nigeria, here's how things stand heading into the final Group B games on Monday.

It's all to play for with Nigeria, Canada and Australia all able to qualify for the knockout stages.

The co-hosts will need a win against Canada if they are to guarantee their spot in the next round.

You spend months preparing for a tournament and when you finally get there it goes like that *clicks fingers*

Australia have to get over this disappointment quickly and get their heads on the next game against Canada.

They would not have wanted to need three points from it to qualify from the knockout stages, but that is the situation that they are in.

Today is done, focus is now on Canada.

    Wow, what a game.

For Nigeria to put on that performance and stifle Australia was fantastic.

They deserved to win the game, 2-3... amazing.

  10. 'Fantastic header from Kennedy'published at 13:04 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

    Australia 2-3 Nigeria

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC Two

Kennedy leaps on the shoulders of her team-mate Mackenzie Arnold, uses her as a boost and it is a fantastic header.

Their best corner of the game and it grabs them a goal.

    Alanna Kennedy

Australia finally have a goal from a corner. But is it too late?

Australia goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold made her way forward for that corner but it's Alanna Kennedy who gets a head to it and powers it into the net.

  12. 'Huge miss from Foord'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

    Australia 1-3 Nigeria

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC Two

That is a huge miss for Australia.

Foord followed the ball in well at the back post, but she heads the ball straight at the goalkeeper.

    She has to do better.

How has Caitlin Foord not scored?

She is unmarked at the back post but her header is lacking any sort of power as the ball ends up safe and well in the hands of Nigeria keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

  14. INJURY TIMEpublished at 90 + 3 mins

    Australia 1-3 Nigeria

A massive 11 minutes of injury time have been added.

Not the best news for Nigeria, but Australia will have to produce something spectacular if they're to overturn a two-goal deficit.

  15. 'Australia could play another 20 mins and not score'published at 12:56 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

Former England defender on BBC Two

The crowd reaction to the stoppage time is telling, they're grateful for it.

I don't see things changing though, Australia could play for another 20-30 minutes and I don't see them scoring.

Two minutes of normal time for Australia to get something back.

A win would have guaranteed them a place in the knockout stages. A defeat leaves them with it all to play for in their last game against Olympic champions Canada on Monday.

  18. 'Why not use technical quality of Simon?'published at 12:48 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

I don't get why Australia have gone for Alanna Kennedy up top, their crosses into the box have been poor and Nigeria have defended them comfortably.

They have Kyah Simon on the bench who can get the ball down and bring that technical side of the game to the attack - why not bring her on?

Matthew: Never before at a Women's World Cup have a host nation gone out before the quarter-finals. While NZ getting through would be a great achievement for them, if Nigeria do hold on, we could be looking at a final set of games where both hosts need a result to qualify.

Australia bring on some height with Clare Polkinghorne coming on for Cortnee Vine as Australia prepare to take a corner.

Polkinghorne, and no one else for that matter, can get on the end of it, though, as Nigeria clear it to safety.

Can the Super Falcons hold on?
