  2. 'We can compete with the best team in the league'published at 20:14 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Robert Vilahamn speaking to Sky Sports: "I think we showed the fans that we are on our way to do something really good. I think we were actually quite good in the game, we had some really good attacking build-up, some really good football, really good goal chances and we created kind of an even game for 97 minutes so I'm kind of pleased with that.

"of course I want to win this game but this eight weeks show that they do what I want from them so they have been listening and they want to do this and they are brave to do it and I think it was a good first step for that.

"Chelsea were really good of course, they could have gone 3-1 up but when you get so close you want to go because of the momentum. When you look at it, I'm going to analyse every game this year with performance and not the result so when I look at this game on Monday I'm obviously going to see a lot of good stuff but also somethings we need to improve

"We scored one goal but of course to score goals you need to shoot and I think we had some really good shots so that showed we can compete against the best team in the league and already now we can compete which makes me really happy and when the team keeps going, they will know how to score against these players.

On his new signings making an impact: "Grace Clinton is only 19, 20 years old but she still dominated this game and she will be the next superstar in this country if you ask me. I think she's good and she has the potential to be so good. Martha [Thomas] is world class, she's played in Scotland, she gives us everything we need, the press and the target play and everything. Olga [Ahtinen] and Luana [Buhler] are adapting to this league, they have some really good stuff in this game and some stuff to improve but I'm really happy with the four of them."

  3. 'We need to invest, everyone in the stadium knows it has gone in'published at 20:11 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "I said to the players at half time that everything was a step off. When you go man for man in the press but you are a yard late in every moment then you suffer. We didn't anticipate the movement from Spurs, when the ball went beyond the press we were a bit static.

"We were the same in possession, we were playing balls short to people when they were looking to go long. It is just a lack of rhythm.

"I am looking forward to a training week, we haven't had a lot of time training and that is why you have seen a mixed bag of performances.

On the goal line technology debate after Reiten's effort was not given: "I said to the fourth official, 'I bet you are glad that Lauren James scored.' If this is the top level of football i.e the Premier League of women's football, we had VAR lite in a pre-season friendly, we need to have it in all games. We can't have the technology at the World Cup but not in the league, or the FA Cup final but not the semi-final. Either we have it or we do not.

"I want to know why we are not investing in it. It is embarassing when I am stood on the halfway line and everyone in the stadium knows it has gone in.

"Yes there is always room for human error but that is what VAR should be there for."

  4. 'We started playing like the Harlem Globetrotters and forgot to do the basics'published at 20:08 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "We've got quality going forward. I thought it was laboured first half, but that is normal after an international break. It is hard to get into that rhythm, and even Millie [Bright] mentioned to me about not playing alongside Maren [Mjelde] an awful lot. Those connections take time to build.

"We took our time to grow into the game, but when we went one nil up, then two nil up, we then got complacent. I didn't like that part about us, we didn't go on and get the third and the fourth. Tottenham then got back into the game.

"We started playing like the Harlem Globetrotters and forgot to do some basic things. I am disappointed with it because I expect us to have more control even when we don't get that third goal in a game.

"But, I thought the players that came on from the bench did a tremendous job.

On the combination between James and Fishel: "Yes I have seen them gel quite quickly, but they are going to be watching a lot of tapes this week. There were things I wasn't happy with in the first half, not in possession, out of possession.

"When you play teams at another level it is crucial for our whole team to be switched on. Not justin the first press either, when the ball goes beyond that, and I think we did that so poorly in the first half. Nonetheless brilliant debut from Mia and the connection with Lauren was there to see throughout.

On Fishel's debut: "She was a bit out of the game for the first 15-20 minutes but when she did feel her way into it, her connection with LJ [James] was excellent."

  5. 'Take more than two touches and you're going to get smashed'published at 20:00 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Mia Fishel speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a dream come true, playing for my dream club with these players. I've been here a month and I'm excited."

"I had no doubt [about starting at Stamford Bridge] and that's kudos to Emma [Hayes] and the team for making me feel welcome so kudos to them.

On working with Sam Kerr: "Sam Kerr is considered one of the best strikers and just to be in an environment with her and to be able to ask questions, I'm excited to learn from her."

On making her USA debut: "Another dream. To represent the US is world class. I'm just excited to keep learning, keep building and hopefully I can keep winning with Chelsea."

On the differences between the WSL and the Mexican league: "Intensity is different from the Mexican league. We don't get a lot of time on the field, take more than two touches and you're going to get smashed so that's the major difference."

  6. 'I'm just happy to be on the pitch'published at 20:00 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Lauren James speaking to Sky Sports: "I enjoyed it [playing centrally] and then I went on the right. To be fair, I'm just happy to be on the pitch.

"Even with the new players who have come in, everyone gets along and that shows on the pitch, especially with [Mia] Fishel up top."

  7. 'We took it all the way against the best team in England'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Goalscorer Martha Thomas speaking to Sky Sports: "Reflecting after the game we played really well and took it all the way against one of the best teams in Europe if not the world. Definitely the best team in England.

"There are so many positives to take from the performance, we had plenty of chances and got in and around their box. They took more chances so that is something we need to learn from, improving in our own box. The display it is something we can take forwards.

On the side felt they were a threat to Chelsea throughout: "Absolutely. We had plenty of chances and couldn't finish some of them. Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don't. That is something we will work on as a team, and improve. I am excited and looking forward to that.

On if she thinks she could have scored more than one today: "One hundred percent. The one versus one maybe I should have done a little better, take it around the keeper or dink it over her. I will look back at the angles and work out where I could have done better. To be more clinical in those moments going forward. Happy to get the goal but it was unfortunately not enough."

  8. Late drama sees Man Utd victorious at Villa Parkpublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 1 October 2023

    Aston Vila 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester United came from behind to beat an Aston Villa side who lost Kirsty Hanson to a red card in an enthralling match to start to the Women's Super League season.

Scotland winger Hanson was shown a straight red card for a high tackle on midfielder Hayley Ladd in the second half at Villa Park.

But the hosts took a shock lead minutes later when England's Rachel Daly drilled into the bottom corner.

Villa's celebrations were short-lived as United found an immediate response - Spain forward Lucia Garcia pouncing on a loose ball in the box from a corner to make it 1-1.

And United completed the comeback to win the WSL season opener in dramatic fashion when substitute Rachel Williams headed in Nikita Parris' cross in stoppage time.

Tottenham showed a lot of character today, ability and intent and despite the defeat this evening it feels like they will have a different and more positive season this time around.

In the end Chelsea's class and quality shone through.

The substitutes they were able to bring on from the bench was incredible, so many internationals and it is no surprise that they had enough to win.

A good win, not the best performance, but a good win.

    Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

Chelsea hold on to start their title defence off with a win.

In truth they fully deserve it. Their class showed when it mattered, through Lauren James and Guro Reiten particularly.

Spurs played well overall but lacked the killer moment in the first half and didn't sustain their push for a comeback at 2-1.
