  2. 'Need to be more clinical'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino speaking to MOTD: "West Ham, we knew they could play in this way.

"They are good in set-pieces, it is our mistakes and we need to be disappointed with the situation. It is the start of the season and it is the process.

"At the moment we need to be more clinical and score more goals when we create the chances."

On Moises Caicedo conceding a penalty: "It was a very negative impact to the team. We played well in the first half and then it was difficult in the second half, we didn't find the right way to play and we did change the shape.

"We were rushing the decisions and pushing decisions to make chances and that happens as the team is new - I am sure we will start winning games."

On Chelsea's reaction to the red card: "Played 20 minutes and we didn't create enough and we conceded a penalty. That is a bad feeling and I am disappointed that we cannot earn what we wanted.

"The Premier League is really competitive."

On Caicedo's performance: "He was telling us he was ready, I think 30 minutes is good for him, many positive things and he is maybe disappointed but we need to move on and he will be a good player for us.

"I cannot change my speech after Liverpool we needed to believe in the process and we need to keep being clam and that is the process."

Can’t make it up today! Let’s not forget though, the team and system is new so it will take time to bed in. Can’t expect miracles after seven weeks. I think we still need a striker especially with Nkunku out for so long. Lady Luck has been against us for some time.

Chelsea need a number nine for the width of the 18-yard box. Look at Haaland at Man City, he doesn't get involved in the build-up unless it is direct from Ederson.

He arrives at the right moments. That is what Chelsea need.

  6. 'Wow, what a good player'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea

    Jamie Redknapp
Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports

Nicholas Jackson is sharp, bright, he's got a good touch. There were moments in that first half when I thought 'wow, what a player this guy looks'. When you're a striker you are judged on your goals.

The quicker he gets one, everything might happen for him. There were really good moments.

Chelsea are younger, more mobile, physically more capable. They are more of a running team.

Just a pre-season isn't enough. It is going to need time to settle in and find a formation that suits the players available.

  8. 'Unbelievable win against Chelsea'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea

    West Ham United

West Ham goalscorer Michail Antonio speaking to Sky Sports: "Last season was not the best season, this season we want to start well - two games and four points and an unbelievable win here against Chelsea.

"We are moving forward and being positive. We were very disappointed in our Premier League performance last season.

"It was a very difficult game, they play quality football and a lot of running off the ball and not on it!

"Being a lone striker you do a lot of grafting on your own - buzzing to get three points and we go again."

On his goal: "It has dropped nicely in front of me, I saw the keeper step in and I went for the far corner.

"This year for me it's to get goals in the Premier League, I have one in two games but hopefully my tally will be better this season than last."

  9. 'They took their chances and they deserve it'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea's Raheem Sterling speaking to Sky Sports: "It is difficult one to take, the chances we created and dominating at an away ground.

"They took their chances and they deserve it in the end.

"Dominating a game at a ground like West Ham's you have got to take your chances, this is the Premier League and it will come back to haunt you.

"When that second goal went in it was a downer, as we have not taken our chances and they took theirs.

"It is stepping stones, we dominated the game and physically we are better, we just need to cut out some of the sloppy play."

On his recent form: "Difficult transition last year but I am raring to go, in the off-season I was looking to get back to the level I was at.

"When we start winning games it will start getting better.

"I am a player that needs to be driving and being aggressive and that's what I am going to do."

  10. 'This type of game is difficult to explain'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino speaking to Sky Sports: "That's football. Teams like us, we need to get the right balance. I think today there were a few actions we didn't manage well and we concede. We create many chances and we did well in the first half. We should have won the game with our first half.

"In the second half with another isolated action we concede again. To find the space to create clear chances [is difficult] but overall it is this type of game that is difficult to explain. You had the possession, you create and maybe you were the better side but in the end you lose.

"It was the frustration when we miss the penalty. We were playing well and we didn't get the reward. We start the second half a little bit with this belief until we started again to play. Also the injury to Carney Chukwuemeka changed a little bit the shape of the team. Then we start again to dominate the game but again we concede. We need to be more strong in this type of situation because we knew West Ham sit deep and counter-attack and set-pieces are really dangerous.

"Disappointed but this is only the beginning. We need to believe in the process. I think we are going to be stronger and for sure be really competitive."

  11. 'We did the basics well'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes to BBC Sport: "Extremely satisfying. They're really good. They played very well last weekend and well today.

"We hung in there at times, were resolute. Even at 10 men we stuck in and got another goal.

"I didn't think we played well in the first half. We got a goal from a James Ward-Prowse assist. We know he's always capable of that. We never played when we got the ball after that and they dominated.

"We tried to get closer to them in the second half and we did. We stuck at it, did the basics well and got the three points.

"We've always been not bad at them [set-pieces]. You can't score without good deliveries. Hopefully he [Ward-Prowse] will bring the good deliveries. Good start for him today.

"I told him [Michail Antonio] it was a brilliant finish, a centre forward's goal.

"Chelsea are a really good side. I'd be surprised if they're not challenghging the top teams.

"The crowd helped today. We're just back from Prague. They'll need to stick with us - we have a few things we need to improve.

"I have no doubt we'll probably get another couple of players in before the window."

James Ward-Prowse isn't recognised like he should be. Technically, we know he's good but he's so comfortable on the ball with players behind him. He knows when to play short, soft passes but he has the technical ability to play beyond one-touch. That is going to improve West Ham.

  14. 'Dream debut for me'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse speaking to Sky Sports: "It was pretty good [performance], just a direct free-kick missing and a dream debut for me on a personally note.

"It is a special day and first of many, hopefully more to come."

On his set-pieces: "It is big strength of mine and when this place was empty we practiced and then the pressure is on to perform on the big stage.

"You can feel the stadium pick up in energy when we get a set-piece and we have big boys in the box.

"If the ball is right and the run's right, there you go, you take a goal every day of the week.

"Every set-piece we get there is an opportunity.

"We went up against a very good team, and we showed some real resilience."

On the pressure of replacing Declan Rice: "Everyone knows the impact what Declan Rice did for this club, I have come in here and have to show what James Ward-Prowse can bring to the club and that's my mentality."

No improvement from Chelsea from last season at all. Nkunku is yet to come, but he’ll have to be as good as peak Ronaldo or Messi to drag this team to the top four.
