West Ham defending far too deep. No pressure on the ball at all until Chelsea get to within 25 yards of the goal. Antonio left stranded up front. All the same problems as last year....

  7. 'We controlled the game and deserved to win'published at 17:33 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 4-0 Everton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: "Before the match we were waiting to be at home with our supporters. Really amazing because I think we controlled the game, we were for 90 minutes strong. We deserved to win.

"We avoided the situation defensively in the transitions where they are a really good team. I am very happy.

"We tried to control the game with good positioning and then use our players with skill and quality. We did it."

On the injury to Phillipe Coutinho: "I think maybe not serious. It's muscular but I don't think it's going to be a big injury. I think in two to three weeks he will be available again."

  8. 'They were better in all departments'published at 17:31 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 4-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche speaking to Sky Sports: "Miles off, they were better in all departments. Overall, the sharpness, the edge that's important in a performance, particularly scoring goals, them driving in the box, looking more alive than we were defensively. A strange one because we were really on it last weekend and that's what it's got to be, finding consistency. That was badly lacking today.

"Sometimes that's life as a manager. You look at it, you train well, you organise and have a collective down day which was today. You can't wait for someone else to correct it. I've just spoken to the players about that, Everyone's got to make a difference."

"It's been a bit like that - good one week, miles off the next week. We've got to find consistency. No excuses today, they were miles better than us."

  10. 'Every goal is awful'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 4-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton defender James Tarkowski speaking to Sky Sports: "Started off OK then after about seven minutes we capitulated. I saw poor body language. I don't think it's lack of effort as such, it's not like no one runs around, maybe just poor discipline in our shape and we got opened up.

"Every goal for me is awful. I haven't seen them back yet but at the time they seemed awful.

"We had a good weeks training. We started the game alright. Once they scored a goal, they got their tails up and we just completely put our heads down and didn't really even get near them after that.

"We got into good areas, just lack of quality in the final third really. Not enough end product."

Chelsea, best example of poorly ran club in recent years. Literally billions spent between this owner and last in last 3 years, not surprisingly they have bloated squad, players don't know each other and no identity. Poch won't last long... top 4, no chance.

  13. 'Today was a brilliant performance'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 4-0 Everton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa captain John McGinn speaking to Sky Sports: "Last week was tough for us. Newcastle did a job on us and a lot of teams will go up there and be on the back of the same result. We've also had Emi (Buendia) getting injured, Tyrone (Mings) getting injured which has been a big blow. It's been tough to pick ourselves up from it but this one's for them.

"We were hungry, we were upset from last week, we were hurting. We're a good team, we had a really good pre-season. Last week was a set-back but we were so positive this week o try and turn that round and today was a brilliant performance. We probably could have added a couple more."

  14. 'We were very, very angry'published at 17:26 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 4-0 Everton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to MOTD: "We needed to react like we did. It is not enough at the moment because after two matches we only have three points. We have to react like we did today and still be going forward.

"We had a good transition and avoided their transition. We did a very good job today. We want to create and build in this way. I feel good.

"We won today and we want to give the injured players the three points. We were thinking of them for this match. Now we have to play Europa Conference League.

"New chapter this season. We started very well here. The balance is five goals for and five against. We can feel something positive here at home like we did last year but we have to create a new way, a new strong feeling here with our supporters.

"Today we were very, very angry to try and get our performance at home and to forget last week's match. We have to learn. Today we did a lot of things good but there are some moments we can do better."
