  3. League Two previewpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

All games kick-off at 15:00 BST

Only one side in the division has scored fewer than Gillingham’s five league goals, but the fact they turned them into 15 points means they can retake top-spot this afternoon.

The Kent club were overhauled by Notts County last night but will be seeking a sixth 1-0 win of the campaign, or maybe a win of any kind, when they host Morecambe.

Third-placed Mansfield take their unbeaten record to Colchester while the other undefeated side, Swindon, host Walsall.

Fourth-placed MK Dons welcome Stockport in a mouthwatering clash while AFC Wimbledon and Crewe meet in another game in the upper echelons of the table.

Wrexham host Grimsby for the first time since that epic 5-4 Mariners win in the 2022 National League play-off semi-final.

Winless Doncaster will seek to get off the bottom on their long trip to Forest Green while lowly Harrogate face a derby clash at Bradford.

Second-bottom Sutton visit Accrington and third-bottom Tranmere head down to Crawley while Barrow make the long trek to Newport in the day’s other fixture.

  4. League One previewpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

All games kick-off at 15:00 BST

Early leaders Stevenage will seek to continue their fast start to life after promotion as they host Charlton.

Another promoted side, Northampton, will seek to halt Port Vale’s fast start while the division’s only unbeaten side, Portsmouth, take an eye-catching trip to face Derby at Pride Park.

The big games keep coming as Wigan, with their eight-point handicap, host Cambridge while Reading, who have had four points deducted, host Bolton, who are a point off the top with a game in hand.

Of the three winless sides, Burton face a trip to free-scoring Barnsley while Fleetwood host Oxford, who are among the early pace-setters.

Rock-bottom Cheltenham are the only team in the Football League yet to score a goal in their five matches and face a daunting trip to third-placed Exeter who are a point off the top and with the second-meanest defence in the division.

Elsewhere Lincoln host Carlisle, Shrewsbury welcome Bristol Rovers and Wycombe entertain Blackpool.

Sheffield Wednesday v Ipswich (15:00 BST)

    Ben Croucher
    BBC Final Score

Promotion is meant to bring momentum but the mood at Hillsborough is quite flat. Lack of creativity and identity on the pitch, spats between owner and former managers off it, all is not harmonious.

Talk already that Xisco Muñoz’s days could be numbered if results don’t pick up by the end of the month. Ipswich, with a 100% away record, may not be the best team to face today.

  6. Hornets search for sting in front of goal at homepublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    Watford v Birmingham (15:00 BST)

    Joshua Adu-Donkor
    Final Score

It's a gorgeous day at Vicarage Road. An important game for both sides.

Firstly, Watford are desperate for three points. They haven't won since opening day in the Championship. They haven't even scored here since that 4-0 win over QPR.

Birmingham are having their best start in a Championship season in eight years. They come here with real confidence.

Manager John Eustace returning back to his former side where he is much loved as a former captain.

Blackburn Rovers, founder members of the Football League in 1888, are today playing their 5,000th game.

Much has happened over the years, with Premier League title success to go with their old First Division honours and six FA Cups (to name just a few triumphs).

There has also been hardship and protests along the way, but today Rovers are keen to celebrate.

Defender Dominic Hyam has spoken about the focus being on beating Middlesbrough, but the significance of the match is inescapable with presentations part of this special matchday at Ewood Park.

Three Championship teams are still awaiting their first victory of the new season going into today's action.

Just as they did last season under Chris Wilder, Middlesbrough have begun the campaign without a win in their opening five games. Michael Carrick's side are bottom with a single point and the worst goal difference in the division but will be seeking a reversal in fortunes as they head to Blackburn.

After starting with four defeats Sheffield Wednesday did get off the mark with a battling stalemate at Leeds last time out. They will be seeking to add to that point when they welcome Ipswich, who were promoted alongside them last season but have enjoyed a very diffierent start to life back in the secon tier.

Making up the bottom three are Swansea, who have drawn two of their five matches. They head to fierce rivals Cardiff at 19:45 BST trying to extend their record winning run in the derby to five. If they do so they would leapfrog the Bluebirds.

Fourth-bottom Huddersfield host fifth-bottom Rotherham this afternoon with both sides seeking to distance themselves from the foot of the fledgling table.

  9. Jostling for top spotpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

Leicester City occupy top spot of the Championship again after their Friday night frenzy at Southampton, but that could change against significantly again today.

Preston North End, who sat at the summit during the international break, can get themselves back there if they get the better of 10th-placed Plymouth Argyle.

If Preston slip up at Deepdale, then Ipswich Town are in with a shout of going top if they can bang in a few against strugglers Sheffield Wednesday.

Birmingham City can go as high as second place today if results go their way and they can get the better of Watford at Vicarage Road - something Blues have managed only once in their past 18 league visits.

It wasn't only the Championship that captivated last night, as Notts County reclaimed their place at the top of League Two with a 2-0 win at Salford City.

David McGoldrick and Dan Crowley goals were enough to have the Magpies fly back above Gillingham before today's games.

Spectators at St Mary's were still finding their seats when Jamie Vardy sent Leicester City on their way to victory at Southampton on Friday night.

The 36-year-old former England striker opened the scoring after just 21 seconds in a game littered with both defensive errors and moments of absolute class.

Stephy Mavididi was sublime for the Foxes as misery was heaped on a Saints side that has now conceded nine times in two games.

Hello and welcome to a jam-packed afternoon of English Football League action.

Ahead of us we have a smorgasbord of 32 fixtures, which includes nine from the Championship, 11 from League Two and a full schedule for League One.

Nothing says the international break is over more than that! (The fact that there were only two League One fixtures last weekend because of internationals continues to amaze me).

We have plenty to dig into before matching kick off in about 30 minutes, so let's get started...
