  2. 'Almighty challenge for Hibs'published at 2 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Aston Villa

    John Collins
Former Hibs manager on BBC Sportsound

This an almighty challenge for Hibs tonight against a big English team coming here with all the superstars and big money, but when the game kicks off it's 11 v 11 and players have to be at it.

I thought Hibs would line up 3-4-3, but it very much looks like a 4-4-2.

That is very, very bold from Lee Johnson.

Tonight has been confirmed a sell-out, but there are still a fair few empty seats with kick-off just around the corner.

The kick-off time for a Wednesday is far from ideal. That could be playing a part, or folk are just trying to rattle through one more round.

  8. Johnson hopes for memorable 500th game...published at 17:38 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

    Hibernian v Aston Villa (17:45)

Hibs manager Lee Johnson insists it's all about his players tonight as he takes charge of the 500th game of his managerial career:

"Timed to perfection," he told BBC Scotland. "It's hard enough one game at this level, so to get 500 is a lovely milestone for me, but it's not about me tonight. It's about the club and it's about the team.

"The boys have worked extremely hard to get this opportunity, and we want to give a really good account of ourselves. It's a big competition, we're here on merit, and this is the next opportunity to enhance the reputation of the club and the players as well.

"The atmosphere may play a part, but top players are used to that. We've got to concentrate on ourselves, what we do. This is where we want to be, this is a great occasion for us, and we've earned it."

Now, everyone looks up to John McGinn.

He's that kind of guy on the pitch. He's the Villa captain because they trust in him and believe in him. He shows that on the pitch and off it.

I'm no mind-reader, but John McGinn currently has the expression of a man who is plotting how to grab himself a pizza crunch before he needs to head doon the road to Birmingham later.

After all, he's on record saying it's his guilty pleasure...

Eh, for any of our English audience, a pizza crunch is a cheap, doughy slice of deep-fried pizza.

Aye, it's as glorious as it sounds.

Aston Villa make their way to Leith on the back of a contrasting start to their Premier League campaign.

    Hibernian v Aston Villa (17:45)

In England, it may just feel like the season is kicking into gear. What's a summer break feel like?

Up in Scotland, it's more a case of a long weekend, a quick wee stretch and get back to it. Hibernian are now on game eight of their campaign covering three different competitions, with a varying degree of success.

In Europe, a ropey showing away to Inter Club D'Escaldes was rewarded with a shock 2-1 loss, a result which was turned around and then some at Easter road with a 6-1 victory. Lucerne were then dealt with in the next round 5-3 on aggregate.

Domestically, they're on zero points from two games in the Premiership matches, while Championship Raith Rovers were narrowly edged out at the weekend in the Viaplay Cup.

There's no downplaying the glamour occasion Hibs have earned themselves tonight, but you could hear a collective gulp across Leith when Aston Villa's team news dropped on their social media pages.

If reported fees are to go by, the Premier League side have spent an eye-watering £80m this summer.

Big money signings Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres feature for Unai Emery's side.

In comparison, Hibs' summer spending amounts to about £1.5m. The contrast is quite funny.

  15. Cash drops out in only Villa switchpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

    Hibernian v Aston Villa (17:45)

After skelping Everton to claim their first Premier League points of the season, it's no surprise that Unai Emery makes minimal changes to his Aston Villa side.

Only Poland international Matty Cash drops out, with Diego Carlos his replacement. It seems likely Ezri Konsa will be the man to fill the right-back slot, while the Brazilian Carlos partners Pau Torres in the centre of defence.

On his return to Easter Road, John McGinn will lead out the visiting side as he wears the captain's armband in Edinburgh.

It's another bold European line-up from Hibs boss Lee Johnson, who makes five changes from the side that squeezed past Raith Rovers en route to the quarter-finals of the Viaplay Cup on Sunday.

In come Lewis Miller, Will Fiish, Lewis Stevenson, Joe Newell, Dylan Vente, while the names dropping out are Kanayo Megwa, Riley Harbottle, Jimmy Jeggo, Adam Le Fondre and Christian Doidge.

It better be the good one! Lee Johnson's side have certainly blown hot and cold so far this season but if there was any solace to be found around Villa's intent, just take a look at their starting line up below.

    It's strong.

Unai Emery loves a European run. No messing about here or prioritising the Premier League. It looks like he's up for the long European haul once again.

Hibs know the size of this challenge. Only the best version of themselves will do tonight.
