  1. 'These players want to change the destiny of the football club'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    FT: Luton 0-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to TNT Sports: "A lot of character and resilience, which the team has showed a lot in the previous games before today. We started really well, should have been three or four up, but then you get the red card and it is a different type of game.

"I thought we held it together really well. They had some opportunities, we had a few of our own. In the end we get three points at a difficult place to go."

On the mentality change since last year: "I don't think it is fair to compare to last season, and speak about what happened then. It is all credit to the players, the way they have bought into what we are trying to do.

"We are really tight as a group, which you see because not only are we winning games but apart from the football which has been good, the resilience we have shown has been great.

"The players want to change the destiny of this football club and that is what they are trying to do on the pitch.

The half time change after the red card: "I thought we needed a little more control. Pierre [Hoijberg] is an experienced player in the middle, and I thought we would still be a threat with Deki [Kulusevski] and Sonny up front.

"They put some balls in the box that we had to deal with, but he [Hoijberg] was excellent in there keeping the ball away from our goal."

On going into the break unbeaten and top of the table: "Yeah it's going alright, but we're in October and still have a lot of work to do."

It was suggested that United should change their policy to focus on bringing in young players, like Hojlund for example. But youngsters take time.

I don't think Manchester United will eat humble pie and write off two years, possibly three years, of watching these youngsters develop.

I get there are financial implications of taking that time, and I think it is more the ego of the club.

Arsenal took the time to bring in youngsters and develop that project and look at them now. Even Manchester City when United were the top team and didn't look like being caught, City then went and invested into their academy and waited for some of those players to come through.

Ten Hag gets a lot of stick but it is not just him, it is the club from top to bottom. The owners, the stadium, the infrastructure, the training ground, the academy, they are miles and miles away from the top.

Most un-Spursy result in ages, let's be honest, 1st 20mins should be 0-3 up and game done, had bad day finishing which happens to everyone, then lost player (rightly so) and still win. Previous years it would have been a collapse and loss Really pleased with the fight and belief, that's historically what Spurs have lacked. Cracking result and dug deep and got through it.

There is no music playing today at Old Trafford as Manchester United pay respect to Cathy Ferguson.

The players will wear black armbands as the women's team did last night in their draw with Arsenal.

Chelsea have great players, a great football club, but things just haven't 'clicked' yet. There hasn't been any harmony of late.

Against Fulham they played some good football, scored some really nice goals and I think this is the point where they may start to turn the corner.

With the quality of player they have, the manager they have, it has to work.

“The first chance we have to obtain the first win is tomorrow at Everton away, a club that is with us in the standings and I think it’s a good chance.”

That was Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola's view in the pre-match news conference.

No need for Sean Dyche to give a team talk today, is there? Just stick that up on the wall in the Everton dressing room.

Spurs outplayed Luton easily at the start, Luton were initially very lucky not to get battered. But football is sometimes a battle and digging deep, things get messy in games and coming through them is as important as playing good stuff. This Spurs side is in the early stages of being able to do both. In another year they will really be in sync and a top side. Fair play.

It’s therefore noticeable that there are a few NFL jerseys in amongst the home crowd today.

I wonder how many are doing the Premier League-NFL double?

    Burnley v Chelsea (15:00 BST)

Two teams who are buoyed by wins in midweek.

For Chelsea it feels like a little validation is coming for them now, for the work Mauricio Pochettino has been doing with these players.

Just the one change, Sterling in for Mudryk, suggests he was pretty happy with what he saw at Fulham.

Same with Burnley, a few more changes, recognising that they are up against a tougher test today, and that is what Vincent Kompany is going to have to do with his side this season.

They will be adapting today, looks like a five across midfield just to pack it out, and to get bodies around the creators of this Chelsea team.

  12. 'We showed a great mentality, an incredible performance'published at 14:41 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    FT: Luton 0-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Man of the match Micky van de Ven speaking to TNT Sports: "An incredible match, I think we showed a great mentality as a team. Really happy I managed to score my first goal for the club and we got a clean sheet too, which is what we want as defenders."

On scoring his first Spurs goal: "I knew James Maddison, always when he goes past the defence, looks for the cut back. So I stepped backwards from where I was in the box, the ball came to me and I just tapped it in. An amazing feeling."

On his teammates' reactions to the goal: "Yes, they were very happy for me. On the way to the stadium on the bus Sonny [Son Heung-min] told me: 'You're going to score your first goal today.' I didn't think so, I said: 'Maybe, who knows!' But it is perfect because now I have scored my first goal."

On his and Spurs' start to the season: "It has been really good. We have showed that we are together as a team, like a family. We have a great mentality and motivation as a team and we need to keep going in this way.

"We need to make sure that we stay fit when we go away with the national teams, everybody has to come back fit and ready. Then when we get back, we have to continue."

Manchester United are playing tribute today to Sir Alex Ferguson's wife, Lady Cathy, whose death was announced yesterday.

Although she stayed very much behind the scenes, Ferguson always said he could never have achieved the greatness he did without Cathy, who brought up their three sons.

It was the death of Cathy's sister that triggered Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

Flags at Old Trafford are being flown at half-mast and United's players will wear black armbands.

Erik ten Hag says if Raphael Varane had a couple more days, he would probably have been fit.

But he hasn't, so he isn't.

Fulham v Sheff Utd (15:00 BST)

    Izzy Christiansen
Former Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you get pumped 8-0 that completely rocks you and what you're saying after that is that it never, ever, ever happens again.

At this level of football that cannot happen. It's embarassing, it really is.

What the fans want to see is progress and they can buy into that as long as it's visible for them to see on the pitch and the players are committed.

I'm not questioning the players' commitment at Sheffield United, I'm just saying that the fans need something to hang on to.

Perhaps after the international break they can restart again.

A huge result for that Spurs dressing room.

Previously there has been a softness; a weak underbelly. Last year had they come here and gone down to ten men, they would lose that game.

Ange Postecoglou has implemented a confidence, belief and steel to this side. They have shown that they can grind out results today.

No Mykhailo Mudryk in Chelsea's starting XI despite scoring his first Premier League goal on Monday since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth up to £89m in January.

Mauricio Pochettino says Mudryk suffered a slight quad injury in the win over Fulham but is fit enough to be named on the bench.

It paves the way for Raheem Sterling to return after a virus.

Sterling has 82 caps for England but has not played for his country since the World Cup last year.

Will the forward prove a point to Gareth Southgate who has once again left him out of the squad for the forthcoming games against Australia and Italy?
