There’s a swirling sense of self-belief around this particular part of the south coast.

Portsmouth looking to extend an unbeaten run in League One that stretches all the way back to March.

If they beat Port Vale, they'll return to the top of the table.

    All kick-offs 15:00

After seeing a four-match winning streak snapped on Tuesday, Cardiff will seek to start another when they host Watford, losers of three straight.

The Hornets are however seeking a fifth straight away win at Cardiff, though the Bluebirds have won four in a row at home.

Norwich are seeking a fourth straight win away at Coventry, though they will have to end a four-match losing streak on the road this season if they are to do so. The Sky Blues have back-to-back victories after winning one of their opening eight fixtures.

Millwall lie 14th but could jump as high as the top six if they can overcome Hull, who are two points and five places ahead of them. The Lions have lost only one of their last 11 home games against the Tigers, who are winless in six trips to the capital.

The last time Southampton and Rotherham met in the league, England were four months away from winning the World Cup.

Saints are seeking a third straight win after a run of four losses while the Millers have lost their first five away games in the Championship. Bad news for their fans is the only two times they have lost their first six they were relegated from the Championship.

  7. Will Moore return to haunt beleaguered Owls?published at 14:44 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

Sheff Wed v Huddersfield (15:00 BST)

Huddersfield boss Darren MooreImage source, Rex Features

It's just over three months since Darren Moore led Sheffield Wednesday to promotion to the Championship in what proved to be his final game as Owls boss.

Moore unexpectedly left the club less than a month later and his replacement Xisco Munoz presided over the club's worst ever start to a season before being sacked on Wednesday.

The Owls have taken just two points from their opening 10 games and, even at this early stage, are at serious risk of being cut adrift.

In the opposition dug-out today? The man who took the club on a club-record unbeaten run last season.

Moore has taken two points from his first three matches as Huddersfield boss after replacing Neil Warnock last month.

He'd love to get his first win as Terriers gaffer today.

Sheff Wed v Huddersfield (15:00 BST)

    Tom Gayle
BBC Radio 5 Live commentator at Hillsborough

The stats make pretty bleak reading for Wednesday fans.

Rock bottom, eight defeats from 10 games, their worst ever start to a season.

Yet Captain Barry Bannan is keen to bring some optimism to the home support within his pre-match programme notes, highlighting the fact there are still “36 games and 108 points to play for”.

Interestingly there’s no reference to his former manager Darren Moore, who the Scot has previously described as “one of the best people” he’s ever come across in football.

  9. Can Coventry continue hot streak?published at 14:42 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    Coventry v Norwich (15:00 BST)

    Ben Mundy
BBC Radio 5 Live at the CBS Arena

It’s a balmy 25 degrees Celsius here in Coventry, where the sky above matches the the tone of the blue seats around me. And, naturally it took just a few minutes upon my arrival to spot a fan, topless, soaking up the last of the “summer” sun.

The hosts will be looking to keep their hot run of form going too. Back to back victories against QPR and Blackburn Rovers have taken them to 14 points from 10 matches - and they’re starting to assert some pressure on the teams above them.

One of those being today’s visitors. But, Norwich City are looking to stop a run of three successive away defeats… the kind of run you’d like to forget… unlike this weather.

    QPR v Blackburn (15:00 BST)

QPR must overcome bogey-side Blackburn if they are to haul themselves out of the relegation zone this afternoon.

The third-bottom Hoops are winless in five and yet to win infront of their own fans in any competition this season.

They welcome a Rovers side whom they have beaten just three times in their last 20 meetings, losing the last three clashes. Blackburn haven’t beaten Rangers four times in a row since January 1996.

If they do so today it will make it three straight wins in London for the first time in more than 20 years.

QPR have scored just 10 goals in their last 19 home games and haven’t scored more than once in a game for a year. They'll surely need to break that run this afternoon...

  11. Swans seek to keep gliding up the tablepublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    Plymouth v Swansea (15:00 BST)

    Morgan WhittakerImage source, Getty Images

It’s been nearly 14 years since Plymouth and Swansea last met in the league.

The Swans come into the game on the back of three straight Championship wins, which have hauled them up the table to lie a point and a place ahead of newly-promoted Argyle, who have won just one of their last five.

Argyle’s Morgan Whittaker has scored four goals in 10 Championship appearances this season, which is one more than he managed in 58 appearances in the second tier during his time with Swansea and Derby combined.

Whittaker did however bag a hat-trick the last time these sides met – an EFL Cup tie in August 2021 when his Swansea side ran out 4-1 winners.

Odds on him finding the net at Home Park this afternoon?

  12. Robins looking for Yorkshire doublepublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

Leeds v Bristol City (15:00 BST)

It was a tricky start to the season for Leeds following relegation from the Premier League last season.

However, Daniel Farke is an experienced operator at this level and he's got them purring since the transfer window closed.

The Whites have won three of their past five and start the day in sixth.

Bristol City have been distinctly midtable-y so far this campaign but will be in a chipper mood after a last minute 2-1 win at Rotherham on Wednesday.

Tommy Conway came off the bench to score both their goals at the New York Stadium and his reward for that is... to be on the bench again.

  13. Ipswich target wounded Prestonpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    Ipswich v Preston (15:00 BST)

Ipswich are flying so far this season and could go top of the Championship if they get a win today and Leicester lose.

The in-form Tractor Boys are unbeaten through eight games in all competitions and haven't lost since the end of August.

Meanwhile, Preston are in desperate need of getting back on track.

North End have been hammered their last two games, losing 3-0 to Leicester and 4-0 to West Brom, for their first defeats of the season.

The home side have the momentum but the visitors have a point to prove, expect a good old scrap between these two at Portman Road.

Oxford United hold on and go top of League One.

What a bonkers last 10 minutes. The U's appeared to be cruising to victory against 10-man Bristol Rovers, but Aaron Collins pulled a goal back and then Oisin Smyth and Stan Mills were both given red cards in stoppage time.

But they take the three points and move two points clear of Portsmouth. Pompey can reclaim top spot if they beat Port Vale this afternoon.

  15. Foxes aiming to stay in the huntpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    Leicester v Stoke (15:00 BST)

Leaders Leicester will be seeking to at least maintain their two-point advantage at the summit when they host Stoke.

The Foxes have won nine of their 10 matches and dispatched early pacesetters Preston 3-0 on Wednesday.

The Potters have won just once in seven league games and haven’t beaten Leicester in their last seven meetings in all competitions.

The last time these two met in the Championship was the final game of 2007-08 when a goalless draw saw Leicester relegated to League One while the Potters were promoted to the Premier League.

Foxes boss Enzo Maresca will certainly be hoping this is a happier occasion for his side.

    Oxford United 2-1 Bristol Rovers

Oisin Smyth and Stan Mills have both been sent off for Oxford United in stoppage time! Smyth picked up a second yellow in the 95th minute and Mills followed a couple of minutes later for violent conduct.

That's three red cards in this match now and they're into the 100th minute. Crazy.

Middlesbrough take the derby-day spoils in style against 10-man Sunderland.

An even first half was drifting towards the break when Dan Neil was sent off for the home side for dissent, having been booked earlier in the half.

Thereafter Middlesbrough absolutely turned it on.

Sam Greenwood gave them the lead before Matt Crooks made it 2-0 just two minutes later.

The classy Isaiah Jones made it three with a cool finish and sub Marcus Forss wrapped it all up with a tap in late on.

Four wins in a row for Michael Carrick's men, a day to forget for the Wearsiders.

    Oxford United 2-1 Bristol Rovers

I just mentioned 10-man Bristol Rovers had no chance of getting back into this game...

Well, Aaron Collins has just pulled one back for the visitors in the 89th minute. And there will be EIGHT minutes of added time.

    Wow.
