Ibrox erupted when the ball hit the net inside the first minute. The deafening noise has continued but it's clear Celtic have brought an element of calmness since.

Every challenge, every advance is being roared on by Rangers fans, trying to put pressure on Celtic's inexperienced centre half pairing.

You grow up very quickly in an arena like this.

This is a big test for the Celtic defence, they're young.

  9. 'l'll fight with everything to give fans success' - Rodgerspublished at 11:59 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Scotland new signings Nat Phillips and Paulo Bernardo were never in the plans for today's match, due to a lack of game time.

"Nat is a Liverpool player, he is going to be ready after the international break and we have to respect that. Paulo has had no football over the course of pre-season, he'll get some game time with Portugal's U21's and then we'll have a look at him."

On the lack of goals in recent games, he adds: "It's just our finishing. We have created chances, it's not a defensive outlook, I'm an attacking and creative coach. When you don't take your chances, it gives the opponent something extra to hang on to but I'll always have aggressive and attacking-minded football, it's just having that balance."

On perceived less confidence among the fanbase he explains: "For some, there was a discontent about me coming in, but the vast majority of supporters have been brilliant since I came back and I'll fight with everything I can, as I did when I was first here, to give them success."

  10. 'Important we lay down marker' - Bealepublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

Rangers manager Michael Beale tells BBC Scotland: "It's a huge game, it's the fourth game but that doesn't mean it won't be significant.

"It would be a massive confidence boost to the players and fans to go into the international break with a strong Old Firm win. We know we're playing against a strong opponent.

"It's important we lay down a marker. When you have a big opportunity, you need big performances."

On his team selection, Beale adds: "Borna [Barisic] failed a fitness test yesterday. Dujon [Sterling] is here to play. He can play right or left-back. Ryan [Jack] and Kemar [Roofe] give us experience in this fixture."

  11. Postpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

Michael Beale has one win in five derbies and Brendan Rodgers has one defeat in 10.

This is Rodgers' first taste of the fixture since December 2018 and it's fair to say the landscape has changed since then, with Rangers significantly stronger.

  12. Both sides down in the dumps?published at 11:51 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer on Sportsound

If Rangers lose this game, Michael Beale's post-mortem is going to be intense.

Some people have this notion that he's just in the door, he's not.

He needs to start producing wins that matter; I don't think he's done that yet. The 3-0 against Celtic last season didn't matter, the league was over.

Celtic are in a state of flux, the players they've hung their hat on in recent years aren't playing well.

To call it, I don't know. I'm trying to think of a time where both sides of the divide have come in feeling low about themselves... I can't recall it.

There were six Old Firm meetings last season, with Rangers' only success coming in May at Ibrox once the title had already been decided.

It was 3-0 that day and the other Ibrox meeting ended 2-2.

  14. 'Celtic will take risks'published at 11:46 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

    Pat Bonner
Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

There's apprehension in my body today! It's been a long time since Celtic have come to Ibrox and I've felt maybe, they'll be under severe pressure.

Rangers will press them high up the pitch. Will the Celtic backline be able to deal with that?

Celtic will take risks, Brendan Rodgers will want them to take risks. But, it's about decision-making.

It's just a slower build-up, they play the ball from deep, do the players have the confidence to do that, though?

  15. 'Solid Rangers team'published at 11:44 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

    Neil McCann
Former Rangers winger on BBC Sportsound

The front four - Cantwell, Roofe, Dessers and Matondo - really have to have a big game.

Sterling at left-back suggests Cantwell will sit behind Dessers in a number 10 position, which I do think is his best position.

The midfielder of Jack and Raskin will provide stability. It's a good Rangers team. It looks a solid one.

  16. 'This one feels incredibly important'published at 11:42 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

    Martin Dowden
    BBC Sport Scotland at Ibrox

There's so, so much riding on this fixture and, yes they all matter, but this one feels incredibly important to both sides and both managers given their starts to the season.

Ibrox will be rocking and it's Celtic's task to nullify that as quickly as they can. They've placed heavy reliance on Gustaf Lagerbielke and John Scales, with this game coming too early for Nat Phillips in that area.

Rangers have left a number of new signings on the bench perhaps reflecting some indifferent fortunes there. They may well make an impact later. How Michael Beale will hope so.

This is going to be absolutely fascinating.

  17. Can you hear the Celtic sing?published at 11:39 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

    Well, no.

It's becoming something of a regular occurrence and once again there are no away fans present for the biggest game in the Scottish calendar.

Celtic rejected the offer of around 700 tickets, citing safety concerns, and are understood to favour a return of the pre-2018 allocations which were around 10 times that amount.

"I just think that, with regards to the whole dynamic of it, the game is worse off," said Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers the other day. "It’s just a shame.

"It’s not always just the football, a big part of it is the supporters. That’s why it’s so iconic around the world - so to have the game with away fans not there is not the same."

Rangers chief executive James Bisgrove has already said a return to the old share is "unlikely".

  19. 'Not the be all and end all' for Celticpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

In contrast, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was playing down the long-term consequences of their first derby meeting of the season.

"Of course you want to play well and put a marker down, but it’s not the be all and end all," he said on Friday.

"It’s a game we want to go in and play well in and perform and look to get the result.

"Our style will always remain the same, how we want to work, how we want to play, and it’s just about getting up to speed with that and getting that intensity into our game."

  20. 'Biggest game' for Beale?published at 11:31 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Rangers v Celtic (12:00)

Former Ibrox gaffer Graeme Souness reckons this is "a must-not-lose game" for Michael Beale.

Sportscene presenter Steven Thompson says it's the "biggest game" of Beale's career.

That's a lot of pressure on the fourth league match of the season, but it illustrates the intensity of life as an Old Firm manager.
