I spent a fair part of my career playing midweek European games and internationals and we didn't have the sports scientists and nutritionists you have today. You should be embracing it, not using it as an excuse.

It's very early in the season, but it's quite a surprise to see Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen in the bottom six.

Is that simply down to European exploits or are there deeper issues at play?

  4. Naismith urges 'bravery' from Heartspublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

FT: Heart of Midlothian 0-1 Motherwell

Hearts' technical director Steven Naismith tells BBC Scotland: "It's been the same after every European game we've played. We've come into the game at the weekend with lethargic, slow play and given away cheap goals. That's been consistent over these games. We've highlighted it but it's a mentality thing.

"We can't put it down to playing in Europe because that's where we want and expect to be. We work all season to get into Europe. You might not be at peak physical condition, but you need to work out a way to stay in the game and come up with a moment to win it. We've not shown that. We've not done enough to create good chances.

"The last two league games aren't acceptable, to come away with no points, not create many chances and concede sloppy goals. We need to use this time to make sure we're back to where we were at the start - Rosenborg at home, St Johnstone away. We need to play with bravery, we've gone away from that."

  5. Aberdeen 'will be fine', says Robsonpublished at 17:43 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Aberdeen 0-2 Hibernian

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson tells BBC Scotland: "You had two tired teams there, no energy, no zip. Credit to David [Gray] and Hibs, he's done really well today.

"That's not how we want to play. That was the frustrating part. It was always going to come down to a bit of magic or a set play and that's what happened.

"We are building a new team. We've got all these players that have just come in the door. They've hardly introduced themselves to each other. We will be fine. We've got real speed, we've got a good group, we've got some really good players and once we get going, we'll be fine. I'm really relaxed about that.

"I'm annoyed today. but they're on a learning curve."

    John Hughes
    Former Hibernian manager on Sportsound

One day David Gray will be Hibs manager. I've no doubt about it.

If they're going to give him the job, he'd never turn it down, but this is his testimonial year and I'm worried it would spoil his legacy.

For these big jobs, I think you need experience, had a few failures but come back for more.

  7. 'Fantastic team performance' - Graypublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Aberdeen 0-2 Hibernian

Hibernian interim manager David Gray tells BBC Scotland: "It's a fantastic team performance, right through the team. We've been conceding too many goals, we're aware of that. We were fully deserving of the win.

"David Marshall makes a great save at 0-0. Changes happen, we have a couple of opportunities and we were worthy of our win.

"It was such a team performance. I'm delighted with the two boys coming on and getting a goals but, to a man, they were absolutely outstanding."

Asked whether he wants the job long term, Gray replied: "I've not even had time to think about these things."

  8. 'Monumental effort from Motherwell'published at 17:28 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

FT: Heart of Midlothian 0-1 Motherwell

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell tells BBC Scotland: "We were good in the first half, our shape worked well and we had decent moments. We made Hearts change shape and personnel at half-time. If we do that, we've done something right.

"You learn a bit about each other. You learn about the character of the person sitting beside you in the dressing room. Everyone took one in the face at some point, with all the blocks going on.

"We work on waves of attack and you could see it paying off, we looked comfortable. Our keeper faced one shot on target. It's a different way of winning a game of football and keeping a clean sheet.

"Our two goals last week were exceptional team goals and it was the same again today. Full credit to the players. I'll give them all the information I've got, but they need to be receptive.

"When you come to big stadiums, it's our job to turn the atmosphere. It can be a powerful thing. If we can be good in certain moments, can we plant seeds of doubt in the crowd? We were able to achieve that in spells.

"There will be a decent amount of hype and rightfully so. Since February, it's been monumental, but we won't get carried away. For us, it's been an excellent start. I've not lost an away game yet. We're chalking off some real tough venues along the way. We'll keep that mindset."

    FT: Aberdeen 0-2 Hibernian

    Willie Miller
Former Aberdeen captain on BBC Sportsound

When Hibs went 2-0 up, the body language from Aberdeen was really poor. They didn't seem to have any energy. There's been some good parts in games this season but there's work to be done. They need to turn this round quickly.

  11. 'Hibs points desperately needed'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Aberdeen 0-2 Hibernian

    Willie Miller
Former Aberdeen captain on BBC Sportsound

David Gray can take great credit from the impact his substitutes made and he'll be delighted by what the players gave him. Those three points were desperately needed.

  12. Gray gets Hibs organisedpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Aberdeen 0-2 Hibernian

Hibs had a bit more about them than Aberdeen today, with 15 shots to 10, while it was 7-3 in their favour for efforts on target.

What might please interim head coach David Gray the most is a first clean sheet of the season.

They looked more organised and aggressive than they did under Lee Johnson and goalkeeper David Marshall had a good day after his recent wobbles.

Could Gray be in with a shout of the job long-term?

  13. FULL-TIME Aberdeen 0-2 Hibernianpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Hibs secure their first Scottish Premiership win of the season thanks to second-half goals from substitutes Adam Le Fondre and Christian Doidge.

After opening with three defeats, the Edinburgh side jump from last place to 10th, leapfrogging Aberdeen, who drop to 11th.

That's four games in the league without a win for Barry Robson's side.

  14. FULL-TIME Hearts 0-1 Motherwellpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Unbeaten Motherwell surge level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership after a narrow, but well-deserved, victory over Hearts at Tynecastle.

Callum Slattery put the finishing touches on a flowing Motherwell attack to give Stuart Kettlewell's the win, extending their top-flight streak without defeat to 10 games - their longest run since 2010.

Despite Paul McGinn's second-half red - after yellow cards for challenges on Alex Cochrane and Liam Boyce - the Fir Park side held on.

Hearts, meanwhile, have lost four in a row and a very disgruntled home support made their feelings known on the final whistle.

Peter Haring - who did, somewhat, stabilise the Hearts midfield - is off. He's replaced by Alan Forrest, who scored two against Motherwell at the start of last season.

Motherwell have brought Nathan McGinley on for Lennon Miller. Shutting up shop.

    Heart of Midlothian 0-1 Motherwell

When Lawrence Shankland can't score, Hearts are in trouble.

A ball bounces into the box. It's chested down by Alex Cochrane to Shankland and he drills a shot straight at Liam Kelly. Anywhere else and that's in.

Can the hosts find a way past centre-half Bevis Mugabi - who might be having his best game in a Motherwell shirt?

GOAL Aberdeen 0-2 Hibernianpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Christian Doidge

It looks like it's going to be Hibs' day.

Christian Doidge initially heads against the upright from Joe Newell's corner but Lewis Miller and Paul Hanlon keep the chance alive with headers and Doidge nods it in.

    Mountain to climb for Aberdeen.
