Michael Beale had said his team were "due a big performance", but they were unable to deliver in this cauldron of noise.

They are not the first - PSV have not lost here since November - but the manner in which they folded will be a cause for concern.

What impact might that disappointment - and the physical toil of this tie - have on Rangers as they prepare for the season's first Old Firm game on Sunday?

That remains to be seen but, if he looks hard enough, the manager might be able to pick some scraps from this in the days between now and then.

What if Connor Goldson's flicked header had gone the other side of the post? What if Rabbi Matondo hadn't scudded an upright after an outrageous dart through the PSV defence? What if they'd not conceded so soon after James Tavernier guided in Sam Lammers' cross to make it 2-1?

That, though, is all moot right now. What matters is Sunday. Celtic. Then the Europa League.

Rangers manager Michael Beale said the Champions League play-off against PSV Eindhoven came too soon in what he believes will be a transitional season for the club.

The Glasgow outfit edged PSV at the same stage last season before enduring a woeful group stage.

"It's fair that PSV goes through," said Beale.

"I thought the story of the two legs was we couldn't handle [Ismael] Saibari and [Luuk] de Jong.

"I think we played against an excellent team over two legs.

"For this team coming together after a lot of change, this game came far too soon, that's what's clear."

Rangers' dreams of an immediate return to the Champions League group stage were extinguished in excruciating fashion by a ruthless PSV in Eindhoven.

The Ibrox side had harboured hopes of exorcising last season's disfigured continental campaign but were unable to eject the Dutch from the competition in the way they did here last term.

Ismael Saibari's first-half header nudged PSV ahead on aggregate for the first time in the tie, and the Moroccan added a second not long after the break. Game over? Not quite.

James Tavernier's strike gave Rangers a slither of hope, but Luuk de Jong guided in a header within a couple of minutes, before Joey Veerman's suspiciously offside effort and a grotesque Connor Goldson own goal completed a chastening evening.

We have a little more reading on Brighton target Ansu Fati, who looks set to complete a surprise loan move from Barcelona.

Fati is widely viewed as one of the most promising young players in the game.

The 20-year-old forward was just 16 when he made his Barcelona debut in 2019, becoming their second youngest player.

In 2021, he signed a new contract at the Nou Camp to run until 2027 and included a 1bn euro buyout clause.

Fati was born in Guinea-Bissau but chose to represent Spain and was part of their World Cup squad last year.

Manchester United have tried to get Sofyan Amrabat on loan but Fiorentina have rejected that idea.

So it looks like the club might have to get creative over the next couple of days if they are to get the players in that manager Erik ten Hag wants.

Marc Cucurella remains on their radar as a left-back alternative, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both injured, and there are other options, but having failed to generate the sums hoped by selling players this summer, United are restricted financially in what they can do.

Manchester United, however, have a bit of work to do to land target Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina...

We are still waiting for official confirmation around Matheus Nunes' move from Wolves to Manchester City but it is expected at some point today given there is a planned medical.

It is anticipated Nunes will sign a five-year contract with City and become the latest piece in Pep Guardiola's squad although, given his new boss is still recovering from back surgery, he won't actually get to meet him until after the international break.

So just to confirm, Manchester City have not yet concluded that deal for Wolves' Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes, but BBC Sport's Simon Stone reports that it is close...

Barcelona forward Ansu Fati will travel to Brighton today to complete a surprise loan move to the Premier League club.

The 20-year-old was part of Spain’s World Cup squad last year and is widely viewed as one of the most promising young players in the game.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order at the club, who need to create some space in their squad for the arrival on loan of Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.

Fati had been linked with Tottenham but is understood to have been impressed by Brighton’s style of play under manager Roberto de Zerbi.

Given the loan is for a single season, with no obligation to buy, Brighton can also offer European football through the Europa League.

If the deal goes through as planned, it would be a major coup for Brighton, who have progressed so far since their promotion to the Premier League in 2017.

While Liverpool have a decision to make over Mo Salah, it looks like Brighton have moved decisively in the transfer market this morning to complete a deal for a rising Barcelona star...

The Mail reports that Saudi Pro-League side Al-Ittihad are ready to offer £118m for Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and the Egypt forward "fancies" the move.
