Manchester City are trying to move the ball quickly, find the little space or a gap and work the Red Star defence and midfield.

You get the feeling a goal is coming. Rodri, who scored the winner in the final in last season's Champions League, blasts one at goal from the edge of the box and it is a brilliant one-handed acrobatic save from away keeper Omri Glazer to keep it goalless.

A lot was made last week of Gareth Southgate's observation that Phil Foden doesn't play centrally too often, which was cited as a reason why he hardly gets used there for England.

Foden is floating tonight. With Sergio Gomez pushing forward on the left, Foden is moving inside and making runs from there.

Phil Foden a little bit unlucky there. Broke the play up really well in the middle of the park and then was heavy with his pass out to Erling Haaland out wide. Not quite there.

Matheus Nunes dinks a ball over the Red Star defence, Phil Foden spins and tries the bicycle kick but can't get a good connection and it doesn't threaten Omri Glazer in the away goal.

Phil Foden unleashes one from 25 yards, it takes a deflection and that sends it well over the bar for a corner, which comes to nothing. It's all City though.

When you look at Manchester City's squad it's not the biggest but they have so much quality. The changes they make are pretty seamless.

You do wonder about Kalvin Phillips not getting a start this evening and if it's ever going to happen for him in a Manchester City jersey.

Mike Summerbee has brought the Champions League trophy out ahead of the teams.

City are making the most of their status - the big question is, can anyone take it off them this season?

I was lucky enough to see Real Madrid on Sunday. With a fully fit squad, they will be hard to beat but I'm not sure they have City's strength in depth.

Kyle Walker claims Manchester City consider themselves back at the bottom of the mountain again this season.

City scaled the heights last term as they became only the second English team to win the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

Now, as City prepare to begin the defence of their European crown at home to Red Star Belgrade, Walker has revealed manager Pep Guardiola wants them to prove themselves all over again.

The England right-back said at a news conference: “It’s our job to stay motivated. We’re at a massive club for a reason, because the manager believes in us and we’re all great players. It comes from within that you have to keep going. The hunger is still definitely in the changing room and from him as a manager as well. He still wants to win more.

“You can see what he is like in games and training. He doesn’t settle for second and we need to follow in his footsteps because he has managed some great teams that have won fantastic things. What we have done is in the past now. It is a new season, you draw a line under it.

“The manager did a diagram for the first game of the season. We start at the bottom of the mountain and we are climbing to the top.

“Our flag will always be at the top because we have won the Premier League and Champions League but we have to go again and again. It is what separates the good teams from the great teams.”

They will be very difficult to knock off their perch in the Champions League this season.

Back-to-back wins is not easily done. Pep Guardiola is trying to make this a great team and one full of winners and we will find out in due course.
