Goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scored a 95th-minute equaliser as Lazio held Atletico Madrid to a draw in their Champions League opener.

With just seconds remaining, Provedel went up for a late corner and glanced a fine header into the net from Luis Alberto's cross.

It prompted wild celebrations from the Lazio players, who raced to hug their unlikely goalscoring hero.

Pablo Barrios' deflected strike had given Atletico a first-half lead.

After Alvaro Morata hit the post, Provedel made several excellent saves to keep Lazio in the match before providing the crucial contribution at the other end of the pitch to earn the Italians a point in Group E.

Provedel becomes the fourth different goalkeeper to score a Champions League goal, after Jorg Butt (three between 2000 and 2009 - all penalties), Sinan Bolat (December 2009) and Vincent Enyeama (September 2010).

  4. 'You have to grow and understand the position you are playing'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

FT: Manchester City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade

More from Rodri, speaking to TNT Sports.

On whether he has made a conscious effort to try to score more: "I think it's something that becomes natural for a player. I feel the way they defend and they give time to the midfielders to shoot it's something I'm trying to work and to grow even though it's not my biggest quality. Not only the goals, assists, in that part of the game."

On what his role is for Man City: "I think the role is a difficult role, you have to learn it over the years. I'm really happy with how I've grown in this position. I'm not the same player as in the first years. Not moving, being always the safety pass, the one the teammate can trust on a pass. The most important part of a player is knowing your role. I think my role is to avoid counter-attacks, to make sure the team is solid in that third. It's an important part of the game to recover the ball and keep attacking."

On how new players adapt to Man City so quickly: "I think we have a lot of tools to be fair in this club. I think the biggest advantage a player has is when you go onto the pitch you have many tools to use. Sometimes here it's easy for players. You have to grow and understand the position you are playing. It talks in a good way about the staff and Pep that everyone that comes into the game adapts very very easily. You see for example Julian is playing as a number 10 and he is a striker. It talks to you about the ability of the managers and players to adapt."

  5. 'A complete game'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

FT: Manchester City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade

    Manchester City

Manchester City goalscorer Rodri speaking to TNT Sports: "I think it was a tough game even though to be fair we could've scored two or three goals in the first half. We weren't clinical enough. They scored with the first chance and the same thing happened against West Ham.

"The most important thing is at half-time talking to the guys and saying 'don't panic, let's keep doing our job'. In the end we scored three goals, Julian [Alvarez] was incredible, Kyle [Walker] was close, I scored, so a complete game in all terms."

On his goal: "I saw in that moment and looked for the far corner. Sometimes you don't have to shoot strong. Stefan told me at half-time the keeper was always in the air and not getting down and to the sides of the goal. Good advice!"

  6. 'We were consistent'published at 22:25 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

FT: Manchester City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to TNT Sports: "The last two games I didn't know how many chances we missed.

"We played really really good but we were not able to score goals. We were consistent and in the end we won the game."

On not scoring after 22 shots in the first half: "Having 22 shots on goal means you are playing really good. It has to be the responsibility of the people in front to have to score the goals. If we scored two goals early in the beginning it would've been completely different.

"We played like West Ham another fantastic game. We missed chances but we were able to create these many sorts of chances and we will win the games."

On his half-time team talk: "I said 'guys, we cannot say we are playing bad. Forget the result, we are able to come back so go for it and be more calm'. We did it."

On if Julian Alvarez is one of the first names on the team sheet: "He deserves it, every single game he is working, scoring goals, making assists. He deserves it."

On Bernardo Silva's injury: "I don't know what he has. I didn't talk with the doctor. Hopefully it is not bad."

Manchester City came from behind and Julian Alvarez scored two second-half goals as Pep Guardiola's men began the defence of their Champions League title with a win against Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade.

European Cup winners themselves in 1991, Red Star threatened a famous win when Osman Bukari put them in front at the end of the first-half.

But City took less than 90 seconds to level after the restart as Alvarez raced onto Erling Haaland's return pass, rounded Red Star keeper Omri Glazer with a superb piece of deception and squeezed the ball home from a tight angle while still running at full speed.

Glazer spoiled an otherwise superb performance 13 minutes later when he went to punch Alvarez's free-kick away from danger but instead got only the faintest touch on the ball which did not divert it away from the far corner.

Rodri's last European goal was the historic effort than secured the trophy against Inter Milan in June. The Spain midfielder ensured City took a successful first step towards this season's final at Wembley by scoring their third as he advanced unchecked into the Red Star box and guided a precise shot into the bottom corner.

The hosts deserved their win - by the final whistle they had amassed 77% possession and had an incredible 37 shots to Red Star's three.

  8. Bernardo injuredpublished at 22:20 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

Celtic's quest for a rare Champions League away win goes on after having two men sent off in a second-half implosion to hand top seeds Feyenoord an opening group win.

Brendan Rodgers' side started brightly and had chances, but were undone on the stroke of half-time when a long-range Calvin Stengs free kick pierced the defensive wall and skimmed beyond Joe Hart.

That lifted the Dutch champions, who had struggled until then, and they capitalised in the second half as Celtic's night completely unravelled.

Gustaf Lagerbielke conceded a penalty and was shown a second yellow card before Joe Hart offered some hope with a great save from the spot kick.

The task become too great, though, when substitute Odin Thoago Holm earned a straight red for a wild challenge.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh then made sure of Feyenoord's win after being gifted time and space to finish emphatically.

  10. 'Overall, you could tell the class'published at 22:15 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

FT: Manchester City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

City had me scared. Red Star delivered and then it was all about the reaction. Guardiola was forced to make a substitution just before half-time, yet another injury.

As against West Ham I don't know what he said at half-time but it certainly got the reaction. The amount of possession, the amount of shots were incredible for a Champions League game.

They were made to work for it but overall, you could tell the class.

The French side are in Group F with Newcastle and AC Milan.

Barcelona coasted to victory in their opening Champions League game with a comfortable win over Royal Antwerp.

Xavi's side were three goals ahead after just 23 minutes thanks to strikes from Joao Felix and Robert Lewandowski, plus an own goal from Jelle Bataille.

I thought when Julian Alvarez first signed I hadn't seen a lot of him but I thought he would come and try and play high up. He's shown his versatility and what an excellent footballer he is. He dropped in that number 10 role, took up some really intelligent positions, his goal was brilliant with the way it was worked. A really intelligent player and it's ominous.

What have we learnt from Pep Guardiola teams over the years? He reinvents them every season.

Alvarez has hit the ground running and it looks like Erling Haaland and Alvarez is Pep's preferred option.

  16. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:56 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

Manchester City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade

European champions Manchester City are up and running in this season's competition.

They somehow fell behind, with Osman Bukari scoring just before half time to punish a wasteful City.

But inside two minutes of the second half, Julian Alvarez made it level. Alvarez's free-kick was then punched into his own net by Omri Glazer for 2-1 before Rodri's composed finish made it 3-1.

  17. GOAL FROM A GOALKEEPERpublished at 21:55 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    FT: Lazio 1-1 Atletico Madrid

The Lazio goalkeeper has scored a 94th minute equaliser!

Ivan Provedel goes up for a late corner, stays up after it is half cleared, and makes a perfect run to flick in a deep cross from six yards out.

Utterly sensational scenes, and it is the final touch of the game as the referee blows for full time as the Stadio Olimpico goes mad.

Manchester City are champions of Europe but they've had to work for it.

They dominated the first half, were dealt with a bit of a sucker-punch, but have essentially shown why they are champions of Europe. A really good response.
