Real Madrid v Union Berlin (17:45 BST)

This will be the first ever competitive meeting between Real Madrid and Union Berlin, with the German side set to become Real's 150th different opponent in all European competition.

Real Madrid have reached the knockout stages in all 27 of their previous appearances in the Champions League.

Union Berlin will be the 15th different German side to feature in the Uefa Champions League, the most unique clubs to feature of any nation.

Only three of the 14 previous German teams to play in the competition have won their first ever game (drawn four, lost seven), with Bayer Leverkusen (1997-98), Kaiserslautern (1998-99) and Wolfsburg (2009-10) doing so.

Union Berlin manager Urs Fischer, on leading the side into their first Champions League campaign: "I feel proud as a player and as a coach. One doesn't know how many more times one will play here, so it's certainly an experience.

"But I also have to say that when it comes to the stadium’s size, I think we already have a certain experience from the league with Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

"But of course, to play in such a well-known stadium, with such a big team that has won so many titles over the years, it's certainly something special. I think there needs to be respect but too much either."

Real Madrid never consider themselves favourites to win the Champions League despite their rich history in the competition, manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday as he singled out holders Manchester City as the bookmakers' pick.

Madrid, who won a record-extending 14th European title in 2022 but lost to City in the semi-finals last season, open their Group C campaign at home to Union Berlin, with Serie A champions Napoli and Portuguese side Braga also in the same group.

"City are favourites because they have a squad that saw them win it last season and they haven't changed much. However in the Champions League, like always, there are surprises at the end," said Ancelotti.

"Real Madrid are a team that are going to fight until the end. We never think of ourselves as favourites, just as I think City don't. They won it last year, they can win the Champions League."

Celtic's quest for a rare Champions League away win goes on after having two men sent off in a second-half implosion to hand top seeds Feyenoord an opening group win.

Brendan Rodgers' side started brightly and had chances, but were undone on the stroke of half-time when a long-range Calvin Stengs free kick pierced the defensive wall and skimmed beyond Joe Hart.

That lifted the Dutch champions, who had struggled until then, and they capitalised in the second half as Celtic's night completely unravelled.

Gustaf Lagerbielke conceded a penalty and was shown a second yellow card before Joe Hart offered some hope with a great save from the spot kick.

The task become too great, though, when substitute Odin Thoago Holm earned a straight red for a wild challenge.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh then made sure of Feyenoord's win after being gifted time and space to finish emphatically.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his side are "in trouble" with a mounting injury list that threatens to disrupt the club's perfect start to the season.

Manchester City came from behind and Julian Alvarez scored two second-half goals as Pep Guardiola's men began the defence of their Champions League title with a win against Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade.

European Cup winners themselves in 1991, Red Star threatened a famous win when Osman Bukari put them in front at the end of the first-half.

But City took less than 90 seconds to level after the restart as Alvarez raced onto Erling Haaland's return pass, rounded Red Star keeper Omri Glazer with a superb piece of deception and squeezed the ball home from a tight angle while still running at full speed.

Glazer spoiled an otherwise superb performance 13 minutes later when he went to punch Alvarez's free-kick away from danger but instead got only the faintest touch on the ball which did not divert it away from the far corner.

Rodri's last European goal was the historic effort than secured the trophy against Inter Milan in June. The Spain midfielder ensured City took a successful first step towards this season's final at Wembley by scoring their third as he advanced unchecked into the Red Star box and guided a precise shot into the bottom corner.

The hosts deserved their win - by the final whistle they had amassed 77% possession and had an incredible 37 shots to Red Star's three.

Eddie Howe is confident Newcastle will grow in the Champions League after they marked their return to the competition following a 20-year absence with a creditable draw at AC Milan.

Howe's side are back in Europe's elite club competition after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, and this was their first match in a tough Group F that also contains French champions Paris St-Germain and German giants Borussia Dortmund.

They were given a reminder of the difficulty of games in this competition as Milan dominated the first half, with Nick Pope saving well from Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez, but they rode their luck while defending superbly to earn what could prove to be a valuable point.

For many of the Newcastle players - and for Howe himself - this was their first taste of Champions League football and the Magpies boss believes it could prove a valuable learning experience.

"You can't underestimate the difficulties of coming here - the emotion of the game, new experiences, we had to take a lot on board today," Howe said.

"I thought the crowd were very good for Milan. It was a hostile atmosphere and the players had to adjust to that and that is why I don't think you can underestimate the performance and point.

"It will look better and better as time goes on. There were new experiences for a lot of us tonight and hopefully we can grow from this."

Five years ago Union Berlin were playing in the second tier of German football. Tonight they will make their Champions League debut against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

In consecutive seasons they have gone from 2 Bundesliga to Bundesliga, then into Europe with the Uefa Europa Conference League, then the Europa League and now the Champions League.

They are the first side from Berlin to play in Europe's elite competition since the traditionally larger Hertha did so in 1999-2000. This season Hertha are in the second tier, looking up at their noisy neighbours.

It is a journey made not with state backing, billionaire owners or - for the most part - household names in the playing squad.

The club are entirely fan owned, financed by more than 40,000 supporter memberships, with those members making key decisions such as the appointment of the chief executive and board.

What a start it has been at Real Madrid for England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who moved from Borussia Dortmund in an £88.5m deal in the summer.

The 20-year-old has scored five times in his first five games for the club to help Real to the top of La Liga having gained five wins out of five, with Bellingham named the league's player of the month for August.

Before Real's 2-1 win over Real Sociedad at the weekend, boss Carlo Ancelotti was full of praise for Bellingham.

“He’s evaluated by what he does on the pitch and he’s doing well," said the Italian.

“He wasn’t widely known because he played in the German league and he didn’t have the role he has now. He’s playing in an important league and at an important club. He’s doing very well and I’m not surprised.

“I don’t think he’s the type of player who will let it go to his head if someone praises him - he’s very serious, focused and professional.

“He has the ability to get to the opponent’s box early and threatening. We talked about him in pre-season and he’s good in this position. He shows consistency and he has great physical strength.

“I don’t know how many goals he can score, but he has to maintain this consistency because he helps us a lot in our attacking play.”
