  2. Report: Jesus helps Arsenal beat Sevilla but suffers injurypublished at 22:58 British Summer Time 24 October 2023

    FT: Sevilla 1-2 Arsenal

Gabriel Jesus scored a goal and grabbed an assist to help Arsenal get back to winning ways in the Champions League with victory at Sevilla.

After losing 2-1 to Lens in their previous European outing, the Gunners came through a difficult test against the seven-time Europa League winners.

Gabriel Martinelli got the visitors up and running by marking his Champions League debut with a goal, racing onto Jesus' brilliant ball and rounding the goalkeeper in first-half stoppage time.

Jesus then increased Arsenal's lead early in the second half with a superb strike into the top corner.

Sevilla, backed by a vocal home crowd, got back into the game when Nemanja Gudelj headed in from a set piece.

From then on, Arsenal had to withstand some pressure as the hosts tried to find an equaliser, and David Raya tipped Mariano's shot onto the crossbar, although it may not have counted because of a possible handball.

Mikel Arteta's side then suffered a late blow as Jesus went off with a suspected hamstring injury, but they held firm despite that setback to secure a victory that moves them top of Group B.

  3. Report: Onana added-time penalty save earns Man Utd winpublished at 22:56 British Summer Time 24 October 2023

    FT: Manchester United 1-0 Copenhagen

Andre Onana saved a penalty in added time to give Manchester United a priceless Champions League victory against Copenhagen.

On an emotional night that began with a lone piper walking out playing the United anthem 'We'll Never Die' as Old Trafford paid its respects to Sir Bobby Charlton, United fans thought Harry Maguire's first goal since February 2022 had given them the win they craved.

But with the allotted four minutes of added time played, Scott McTominay conceded a penalty by swinging a high boot dangerously near Mohamed Elyounoussi's face.

But Onana, who has come in for criticism since his £47m summer move from Inter Milan, turned Jordan Larsson's effort wide with what turned out to be the very last action of the game.

Charlie: Even with United winning tonight, can’t see them getting out of the group. Got to play two more games away from home and Bayern to come to Old Trafford. Hardly convincing against the supposed “weakest” team in the group at home.

  7. Three games running...published at 22:47 British Summer Time 24 October 2023

FT: Man Utd 1-0 FC Copenhagen

Manchester United have conceded a penalty in each of their three Champions League games this season, having not faced a penalty in the competition in their previous 35 games beforehand, since David De Gea saved one against CSKA Moscow in October 2015.

For all the rose tinted talk of how much better De Gea is than Onana, I think we can agree he wouldn't have saved that penalty.

You have got to give Harry Maguire credit, he has had nothing but abuse for a year.

He has won Manchester United a game. A big game for him and Andre Onana.

  10. 'You need magic moments'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 24 October 2023

    FT: Sevilla 1-2 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports: "I'm very happy to win here. There are not many teams have won here in the last ten years in Europe and we've done it.

"I really liked the team, especially the first 60,65 minutes because we played the game we wanted. After we went two-nil up we should have scored a third one and we had openings to score it and we didn't.

"In one corner, the first action where they had something they scored and from there, they have experience, they have a lot of people and a lot of belief they can get in the game."

On Gabriel Jesus: "You need magic moments in these games and you need the big players to step in and create those moments."

On Jesus coming off: "He felt something in his hamstring so let's see. He straight away asked to be subbed which is not good news because he's not a player that does that at all so we'll have to wait and see in the next few days."

On growth of the team: "It's about experiences and learning from those experiences and when you lose you learn much more than when you win. It was a very different team that we were playing against Lens, we had moments where we were dominant."

It's shaping up pretty well for Arsenal in their first Champions League campaign for half a decade.

They would qualify for the knock-outs if they win at home to Sevilla in their next match, and Lens beat PSV in Eindhoven.

  12. 'It was a narrow escape'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 24 October 2023

FT: Man Utd 1-0 FC Copenhagen

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag, speaking to TNT Sports after the game: "Of course it is incredible and a great night. Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana.

"Those players, Harry Maguire played a good game and Andre Onana as well. He made an important save just after half-time.

"A poor first-half, but we stayed calm and in the second-half we stepped up and made more chances than them. It was a narrow escape in the end."

On Christian Eriksen coming on: "Very important, Christian is always positive. He brings football and we did not have the football in the first-half - Copenhagen are well organised and you have to break them. Christian Eriksen makes the right passes."

On team balance: "Of course every time we have to change the back line, if you look back to last year we had a very good back four and so consistent, with Casemiro in front all the time we controlled the ball.

"This season every time we have had to swap the back four and then the routines go away and the midfield opens up, and we struggle to get the right balance.

"We have seen games this season where we have not had good possession and we lose control in midfield. But, I am sure when we get the routines back in the back four it gives the team a foundation to play off."

Nigel: Does the last minute drama and emotion again paper over our cracks at old Trafford ?

Anon: Great end to the game, but the result doesn't hide the poor performance. I just hope after another really poor performance from Bruno Fernandes, that he is dropped for the game at the weekend. I think we'd be significantly improved without him.

Paul: Another pretty awful performance but yet another win. Not sure what to make of united at the minute.

All eyes are on David Raya at the moment aren't they!

If you're keeping clean sheets all the time nobody says anything, but because of what's happened in the past, everything he does we end up scrutinising and saying "would Aaron Ramsdale have done that?" and "should they be playing out in that situation?"

Elsewhere tonight, Jude Bellingham continued his brilliant start to the season with another goal to help Real Madrid claim a narrow Champions League win at Braga.

After Rodrygo's first-half opener, Bellingham found the bottom corner in the 61st-minute with a fine, curling finish.

The England midfielder now has 12 goals in 15 matches for club and country this season.

Alvaro Djalo pulled a goal back for Braga but Real held on to keep up their perfect record in Group C.

Harry Maguire speaking to TNT Sports after the game: "Incredible. We have got to be more clinical, we had numerous counter-attacks and we didn't give them a chance in the second-half.

"The first-half was really poor, it was not perfect but an important win. This man [Andre Onana] stepped up and it was a massive save."

On the win being for Sir Bobby Charlton: "Definitely, it was meant to be. We were meant to win the game, a magnificent save and a win dedicated to Sir Bobby and his family.

"It has been a tough week for us away at Sheffield United and losing someone like Sir Bobby, it affects the cub and the dressing room. But really pleased we could get the win tonight."

On the fans singing his name: "It is amazing. When you are not on your game it gets picked up, but I am really proud and pleased how I have acted over this six to 12 months.

"I have been given an opportunity and I want to help the team and get the club back to where it should be."
