Eddie Howe has been able to change Isak and Wilson over recent weeks and he's done that again this evening, having said that, it's a really strong bench too.

There is no reason why they shouldn't come out flying and full of confidence tonight.

  6. 'Dortmund are dangerous'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Newcastle v Borussia Dortmund (20:00 BST)

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking on TNT Sports: "We have to look back at that game [against Paris St-Germain] and what we did well. When we play well, our off the ball work is a key feature and we were really good that night.

"This will be a very different game though, they [Borussia Dortmund] are a very good team, very dangerous and our gameplan is different so hopefully it works."

On bringing Alexander Isak back into the starting XI: "It's about freshness for us.

"Callum [Wilson] has just come back off a hamstring injury - three or four weeks out - so it's about making sure the players who enter the pitch are in the best physical condition.

Alex [Isak] has been excellent for us this year, as Callum has, so we've got a really good dynamic there. Miggy [Miguel Almiron] is in the same boat. He's back from international duty and a huge player for us."

On playing at St James' Park: "Here at home, one of our key hallmarks is our intensity and I don't think we should change for Europe, hopefully they have to adapt to us.

"It's our responsibility to set the tempo early on and hopefully the crowd, who are our extra man, will then back us."

  8. Pick of the statspublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Young Boys v Man City (20:00 BST)

    • This is the first ever competitive meeting between Young Boys and Manchester City – the Swiss side won their most recent home against Premier League opposition, beating Man Utd 2-1 in the 2021-22 Champions League.
    • Manchester City's only previous meeting with Swiss opposition came in the 2017-18 Champions League – they won 4-0 away before losing 2-1 at home to Basel in the round of 16.
    • Young Boys have played more games in the Champions League without ever keeping a clean sheet than any other team (14). The Swiss side have conceded 29 times across their 14 matches, at an average of 2.1 per game.
    • Pep Guardiola's side are unbeaten in their last 15 Champions League matches (W10 D5), with only Manchester United ever having a longer run without defeat among English teams in European Cup or Champions League history (2 runs of 16, and a 25-game run between 2007 and 2009).
    • Through the first two matchdays in the Champions League this season, Erling Haaland has the highest xG (1.95) of any player yet to score in the competition (12 shots, 0 goals). His current run of five games without a goal in the Champions League the longest in his career.

Young Boys v Man City (20:00 BST)

Both Newcastle's Callum Wilson and West Ham's Michail Antonio agree that Manchester City striker Erling Haaland should be crowned the year's best player and win the Ballon d'Or on October 30.

Lionel Messi is favourite to win his eighth trophy after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in December, but Wilson and Antonio both believe Haaland's 52 goals in all competitions for treble-winning Manchester City should see him dethrone the Inter Miami man.

"What Haaland did last season can't be overlooked," said Wilson.

"If you take away international football and compare statistically - Haaland should win the award.

"You can't look past Messi winning his first World Cup, that is a big contributing factor but club football wise he's been playing in America which is very different to Haaland in the Premier League.

Antonio added: "I agree with Callum. I understand Messi winning the World Cup is massive but you can't look past a treble-winning team and what Haaland bought to that, breaking records. He deserves that Ballon d'Or - if he doesn't get it it's a scandal."

Newcastle are scoring a whole bunch of goals and not just against Sheffield United - they scored four against PSG and they scored four against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

They put in a very mature performance away at AC Milan when they drew 0-0 and they almost sneaked that game.

Newcastle have been a real joy to watch.

Newcastle have put themselves in a great position to make progress from their group and confidence is sky high.

Borussia Dortmund's fans are already very noisy. No shock there.
