Erik ten Hag believes captain Bruno Fernandes' decision to hand Marcus Rashford a second-half penalty against Everton in their Premier League victory on Sunday was a demonstration of his "great leadership".

Rashford ended a wait of nearly three months for a league goal in the 3-0 win at Goodison Park and Ten Hag felt Fernandes showed his commitment to his team-mate by his actions.

"It's great leadership to give the penalty away if you understand that your team-mate needs a goal and you have confidence in each other," said Ten Hag.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes faced questions about the criticism of his decisions and some of his leadership this week.

"It's quite normal when you play for Manchester United that you're going to be criticised, if you do well or badly, if you do the right thing or the wrong thing. I just have to deal with that," he said.

"My focus is on the team, the staff and everyone that works with me day by day. They are really happy with me.

"The way I am is the same since I arrived and has not changed by being the captain.

"I'm really open with everyone and nobody until now has had a problem with me.

"Everyone is pretty happy with my leadership so I think I have to keep it the same way."

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on TNT Sports: "I was just on the pitch. It was raining the whole day. Manchester weather. We are very used to it. I think the pitch is good.

"We are happy Anthony Martial is fit over a long period. We want to keep him fit, he will contribute this season.

"Rasmus [Hojlund]'s speed is a huge weapon. We want to use that.

"Sofyan [Amrabat] is used to playing big games, and has a lot of experience to play big games, with big atmospheres whereas [Kobbie Mainoo] is returning from an injury. He has to get used to a number of games at a high level with high intensity.

"We have to make the crowd whistle. Don't quieten the crowd, we have to make sure they are whistling all the time because then we are playing well. We look forward."

Galatasaray failed to win any of their first five European games against Manchester United but have won their past two against them in the Champions League.

United have never scored an away goal against Galatasaray in three previous attempts (two 0-0 draws and a 1-0 defeat).

In the opening four Champions League matchdays this season, no team conceded more goals than Manchester United in the 15 minutes before half-time (three) or in the final 15 minutes (four).

In addition, no side dropped more points from winning positions than United's six across the first four games.

Galatasaray’s Wilfried Zaha has scored four goals in his past five games against Manchester United.

Rasmus Hojlund has scored five goals in four Champions League appearances for United.

  6. Will Juve beat Inter to Serie A crown?published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

The Derby d'Italia, once the most anticipated fixture in the calendar between two of Italy's best teams, ended in a dull 1-1 draw on Sunday night.

Juventus hosting Inter was supposed to be a delight for the senses, but boredom reigned supreme. At the end of the day, the fear of losing such a fixture shackled both sides from expressing their strengths. Instead, we bore witness to their mediocrity.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho has said "Inter should win the league by 20 points", and he's not wrong. The Nerazzurri are Italy's best team by a country mile. They boast squad depth, a good management team, the best midfield in Italy and in Lautaro Martinez one of the very best strikers in the world. They may be in debt but they are connoisseurs of building on a budget.

Italy's 'Old Lady' Juventus has lost much of her lustre in recent years, culminating in a season devoid of European football for the first time in more than a decade. Poor management, wretched choices in the transfer market and of course, last season's point deductions has seen the Turin giants look more like David than Goliath.

Inter should win Serie A, but who is brave enough to bet against the Old Lady?

Bruno Fernandes expects Manchester United to face "difficult periods" against Galatasaray tonight.

"You know that Galatasaray away is going to be great, it is going to be an amazing atmosphere.

"I think when you are a kid you want to play in this kind of atmosphere.

"We know that it's going to be tough, it's going to be difficult, but we have to think that we can do it because we have done it in the past in difficult situations."

These two met in 1993 at Galatasaray and it became memorable for the hostile atmosphere created by the hosts.

Manchester United were looking to reach the group stages of the Champions League then too.

But, after drawing 3-3 in the first leg at Old Trafford, a 0-0 outcome in the return tie saw United knocked out.

Thousands greeted the players on arrival at the airport with one supporter holding a 'Welcome to Hell' sign.

United boss Erik ten Hag was asked by a Turkish journalist in his pre-match news conference what his plans were "to get out of hell", and he said: "We have to make it our game and it's the history.

"Obviously Manchester United has a great history, but you can't take any guarantee from it in the future, so we have to make our own future.

"It's the past, so [now] it's about the future - we have to make it our game. It's on us."

Erik ten Hag is staying true to his early pledge towards Manchester United’s youth academy.

Shortly after walking through the door last summer, Ten Hag made it clear he wanted to drip at least one youth star into his senior ranks every year.

Ajax fans grew accustomed to Ten Hag's stance. He regularly gave starlets a chance to shine if he considered them worth his attention.

At Old Trafford, last season it was Alejandro Garnacho. And on the day the winger stole the headlines with one of the greatest goals in the club's history, this term’s breakout talent became clear.

Kobbie Mainoo was destined for opportunities in pre-season, leaving those that had seen him in awe of his quality and composure on the ball at the age of 18.

Injury delayed the start of his 2022-23 season, but his performance against Everton was worth the wait. Mainoo has the makings of United’s next great midfielder.

In his first Premier League start, the Stockport-born player made fans forget about Casemiro's absence and left spectators craving more.

Ten Hag’s glowing summary of his display indicates it is just the dawn of a run of starts.

It served as a timely reminder that, no matter United’s status, the talent conveyor belt will never stop.

Erik ten Hag finally got the chance to pick 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo in his midfield on the weekend.

It was a long time coming.

Mainoo was outstanding in the pre-season victory against Arsenal in New Jersey this summer and a clue to Ten Hag's thinking came in the following game against Real Madrid when the Stockport-born youngster started in Houston.

Sadly, Mainoo was injured at the start of that match and has spent the intervening period getting fit.

Evidently, he has some developing to do but the energy and vision he offers is something Ten Hag hasn't had in his midfield so far this season.

He is going to be around for a bit.

Galatasaray make three changes following Saturday's 4-0 win against Alanyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig.

Chelsea loanee Hakim Ziyech returns to the starting lineup with former Manchester City full-back Angelino and fellow defender Abdulkerim Bardakci also coming in.

Davinson Sanchez, Kazimcan Karatas and Baris Yilmaz drop out.

Galatasaray XI: Muslera, Boey, Bardakci, Ayhan, Angelino, Ndombele, Torreira, Ziyech, Mertens, Zaha, Icardi.

Subs: Guvenc, Akturkoglu, Demirbay, Tete, Belsson, Oliveira, Yilmaz, Karatas, Bakambu.

Rasmus Hojlund returns as one of four changes to the Manchester United 11 that started in the 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday.

He replaces Anthony Martial to lead the line with Sofyan Amrabat, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Antony also coming in.

Marcus Rashford misses out due to suspension, while Kobbie Mainoo and Diogo Dalot drop to the bench.

Manchester United XI: Onana, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Amrabat, Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho, Hojlund.

Subs: Bayindir, Heaton, Martial, Reguilon, Varane, Dalot, Pellistri, Mainoo, Gorce, Mejbri, Hugill.

PSG 1-1 Newcastle Utd: Penalty wasn't the right decision

Newcastle had to settle for a 1-1 draw last night after a controversial late penalty decision denied them a memorable victory at Paris St-Germain.

Aleksander Isak's first-half goal had stunned the hosts, as missed chances and some big saves from goalkeeper Nick Pope looked set to give Newcastle a much-needed win in Group F.

But, in the eighth minute of stoppage time, Ousmane Dembele's cross appeared to strike Tino Livramento's body and the ball bounced up on to his arm.

After referee Szymon Marciniak reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor, he awarded a spot-kick, which Kylian Mbappe duly despatched to secure a 1-1 draw.

It received widespread criticism as TNT pundit Ally McCoist branded it a "disgrace", while Jermaine Jenas said Newcastle were "robbed".

It was also a dramatic night at the Etihad Stadium.

Erling Haaland obliterated a Champions League goalscoring record as Manchester City fought back from two goals down to complete a thrilling 3-2 victory against RB Leipzig.
