All five of Lens’ previous European matches against English teams have come against Arsenal (W2 D1 L2).

Their last away game against the Gunners was in April 2000 in a Uefa Cup semi-final, losing 1-0 at Highbury to a Dennis Bergkamp goal.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said what Bukayo Saka has achieved is "rare" for a player of his age.

This is the fifth anniversary of Saka's debut, as a second-half substitute in a Europa League win over Vorskla Poltava.

The 22-year-old went off with an injury in the first meeting with Lens in France.

"He is targeted because he is one of our most dangerous players and teams know that," Arteta said.

"What he’s done in the five years is remarkable. When you look at his stats and how consistent he has been, it's very rare to see that at his age.

"He's a huge part of both teams [Arsenal and England] and you have to see the impact he has in games. He is crucial for us.

"Getting to the top is one thing, but maintaining it is something else. He has done it for five years.

"The way he is improving is really steady - but fast as well. He is still so humble. He has got the right mentality. The right family. The right advice round him. That’s what makes him special.

"He wants more because there is much more to come."

  5. 'Lens in some ways similar to Brentford'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

    Arsenal v Lens (20:00 GMT)

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard returned in Saturday's win at Brentford after three weeks out following concussion.

In his programme notes today, the playmaker said: "I’m back and ready now, and it was great to come back into the team with a win on Saturday.

"We have to improve from when we played Lens in France though. They are a physical team, and in some ways similar to Brentford in the way they defend well, have five at the back, and organise themselves.

"It will be huge if we can guarantee winning the group tonight, it basically means we have done our job in Europe until it starts again in February."

There are five other games at 20:00 GMT.

In separate groups, Bayern Munich (who host Copenhagen) and Real Madrid (who are at home to Napoli) are already in the last 16. Job done with two games to spare.

Napoli would also be through if they beat Real. Braga host Union Berlin - but both sides are well below the Italian champions.

Real Sociedad (at home to Salzburg) and Inter Milan (who visit Benfica) are also through in Group D.

Mikel Arteta: 'We want to be top of the group and we must win'

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says "for sure" he still has something to prove in Europe.

Arteta guided Arsenal back to the Champions League after a seven-year absence - but the closest he came to European silverware was the 2021 Europa League semis.

"I think it is not that we have to prove, we had to come back into Europe being the club we want to be, have that presence and the results that tell them we are back in a strong way," he said.

"We haven't done that yet and it needs to be done."

I don't think Onana should be beaten at the near post. Your positioning has to be better.

He's let his team down tonight and I don't like saying that. You have to do better in a game of this magnitude.

  9. PSV beat Sevillapublished at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

    FT: Sevilla 2-3 PSV

Wow, PSV turn things around, coming from 2-0 down to beat Sevilla 3-2.

A Sevilla win would have seen Arsenal through.

It means Arsenal will secure a spot in the last 16 with a draw against Lens, and will claim top spot in Group B with a win.

Two thrillers so far on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

    Arsenal v Lens (20:00 GMT)

A few minutes ago it looked as if Arsenal would be through before kick-off.

But a point will still do the job tonight with a game to spare.

    Can they find it?

Mikel Arteta will hope this is a lot less chaotic than the early games...

No time to waste. Arsenal are up next against Lens and they still have some work to do to qualify.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Inter Milan are all kicking off at 20:00 GMT as well.

I'm handing things over to Emlyn Begley for the game at the Emirates.

    See you again soon!

Manchester United should have won this game. Andre Onana has let them down.

That was an unbelievable spectacle but Manchester United will be frustrated they gave away a two-goal lead on two occasions.

Their European hopes are hanging on by a thread and they are currently bottom of Group A.
