More from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking in the post-match news conference: "There is still many things to play for, now we can focus of course on the Premier League and this is I think the level we want to play Champions League so we have to give everything to be in the top four so next year we are back in the Champions League and of course we have the FA Cup."
On having one shot on target: "I think the game was like this, both sides less chances but I think there was a good intensity in the game and from our side we brought Bayern out of their rhythm, the defending organisation we did quite well if not very well, especially first part of second half where we had really good ball regains high up the pitch, also we had a very good chance from Bruno. So we had our moments but didn’t take them.
"I look to my team and we had the opportunities in games, in winning positions, we scored many goals so we have to see we gave it away sometimes by individual errors, not one player but more players, not every time the same so we gave opponents opportunities. We had very good spells so we have to do better but the fact is not enough points. We are disappointed. We should have done better."
Do anything differently? "But I think it is not only talking about the campaign you come to the same things so why did this happen, it is simple today we have to make subs and losing players and players who are very decisive for our game who can make the difference and in many games it was the case, in this campaign we had not always the players available we want. Now I give you a reason but don’t see it as an excuse, even when we are not all on board, we have to win for Manchester United."

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, asked if Harry Kane is the difference to win Champions League? "Harry is always a difference maker, 100 percent with his personality, his calmness, his quality, the team knows anything can happen in any minute with Harry, he is one of the top leaders in the group.
"Manchester United suffers from the injuries in the group, big players, big personalities and you can see that. We made it as head of the group into the last 16 and the full focus will be to go step by step.
Sympathy for Erik Ten Hag? "Almost always I feel sympathy for the other coach but we try everything to win matches, these are the goals of high level sports but of course I have sympathy, he has a lot of key players injured for a decisive match, they lack the personality and maybe the width to change games from the bench. It is not an easy time but I am pretty sure he knows what to do next and he does not need my advice or clapping on the shoulders, he is experienced enough to go through it. I had not a nice moment last Saturday and sometimes you feel pretty lonely as a coach
Surprised United bottom? "Yeah this is a huge club and not what you expect. In the group you expect also Manchester United challenging for the win of the group and a place in the round of 16 but in my experience I can tell you we had a difficult group.
"The matches were tight, the results were narrow so you could see everything was possible until today for Manchester United. In some of the matches games changed in a blink of an eye. They were comfortable in the lead in Istanbul and gave it away, they were comfortable in the lead in Copenhagen.
"It is a big club, they are a dangerous team"

There's your chance to put something right again. In football, your next game is your most important one. They've got to try and get out of this rut.
Go to Anfield and roll your sleeves up. You're Manchester United, playing against your biggest rivals.

This is just the second time in the Champions League that Manchester United have lost two home group games in the competition (also against Galatasaray), previously doing so in 1996-97 against Fenerbahce and Juventus.

Harry Kane is the first player in the big five European leagues across all competitions this season to reach 30 goal involvements (22 goals, eight assists), tonight registering his third assist in the Champions League this season, his most in a single edition of the competition.

There's a massive drop off in the team when they don't have Casemiro or Eriksen. A massive drop off of quality.
But the big concern is that Hojlund didn't have a chance. They're not creating anything.

Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on his side's Champions League return: "Overall, I think, very positive. Having not been in the competition for six or seven years and having a team that hasn't got that much experience, I think we've competed really well.
"I really liked the approach of the team in every single game, the way we've tried to play. We had some big results and big experiences, like the one we had in Seville or Lens, or even today looking at how the team can act and how fair it is to give certain players that exposure when you make so many changes.
"Overall finishing first with a game to play we have to be really happy. Now we have to close that chapter until February and make sure that when that chapter opens up again that we're in the best place to compete against another top side."
On bringing on Declan Rice at centre-back as a second half substitute: "We have to try as if we have an emergency, we have to understand and to be sure that we can fill that gap in the right way.
"He has a lot of composure on the ball, he wins a lot of duels for a player of his size and he has done it in the past. He is a good option."

Why would Harry Kane have wanted to join United? He has left Spurs to win trophies at the top level which means national league titles and Champions Leagues. Madrid, Barca, Bayern, City and possibly Liverpool fit that bracket, United haven't been in that bracket for 10 years.

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot, on Uefa.com: "It’s not the result we wanted. We were hoping for a different outcome. I think we did well and did our best against a good team, but it wasn’t enough in the end.
"We know we expect more of ourselves. We need to do better. We wanted to qualify, but ultimately we haven’t been good enough. We need to learn from it and do better next time."

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to TNT Sports: "We didn't lose it today, that's clear. We had good performance but also we made mistakes. Individual errors. In the end it was not good enough.
"Today's performance was very good, we didn't deserve to lose, but we lost the game.
"The team did very well. We were very good in defending organisations, very good in the pressing. But we did not take enough benefit from it, that's the truth. But also Bayern is a good team. Even when they are not in the game, they have individual class and just need one moment. Unfortunately that happened.
"We know we want to be more consistent. As manager I have to improve the team, I have to guide them and the players have to take the responsibility. We have to do that together.
"The players gave everything, you saw the spirit. I have to credit the team, big compliments to the way they worked together, as a team, against a good Bayern side.
"You need energy from the bench, especially our front line, the options were limited."
Look back on the campaign with regret? "Not with regret. We didn't make it, but we have to accept it. We have to learn from it. We played some good football in the Champions League. We have to take some good performance into the Premier League. We want to be back [in the Champions League'.
On Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw's injuries: "I can't say in this moment. We have to wait 24 hours for an assessment."

Unfortunately, there's not been a progression forward for Manchester United from last season. Is it down to injuries? Possibly.

It's been a really poor campaign. It started with the Galatasaray game at home. As soon as you lose a home game in the Champions League you're fighting and really struggling.
But after that, in some games they looked really good. They took leads in games, just couldn't see games out.

Manchester United fans saying well Copenhagen won anyway so it didn't matter. The performance would have mattered. It could have given them something to hold on to.
When they've come up against anyone half decent, they've lost. Bayern Munich barely broke sweat and they won.
I've got massive sympathy for Hojlund. I honestly don't know if he's any good or not. What sort of service does he get? He is raw having said all that.
Why on earth did Manchester United not make a bigger play for Harry Kane? Maybe they did, but they could really do with someone like him.

This is a game they had to lay it all out there. That never quite materialised.
But if Man Utd opened up, it could have been three or four against. They would have been picked off by this Bayern team.
But it's best-case worst-case. I'd rather see this team go out of Europe completely and focus on the league.

The road to success is rarely a straight line to the top. Great start last season for Ten Hag, injuries and individual errors costing him this season. I still have every faith in the man.

I think it was a frightened performance more than anything. There was such a lack of goal threat.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was nice. I felt like we controlled the game and had the better chances. We were calm and we knew in the quick transitions we could hurt them.
"It is always tough when you are top and through already but we had a good motivation. It was nice to get the win today.
"Everyone has been amazing at Bayern since I arrived. I feel like there is more to come. I feel like I am getting to know more what the boss wants. It suits me well here.
"After the result at the weekend we had a really high motivation here. I think there could be a bit more in the final third. We had a good start to the season but I feel like there are a few more gears to go up.
"We have enough ability to go far in this competition. That is the ambition, to go and win the Champions League.
"It will be a tough test, but we have to keep improving. I feel there is another level we can achieve."

The fans have shown a level of patience, but there's huge disappointment tonight. There was never a cup tie atmosphere and there was never an intensity to win the game. Bayern just cruised through it.
When the draw came out, everyone thought it was a real decent draw. They've got Liverpool at the weekend and there's no bigger tie in England than that one. They've got a chance to bounce back, but they're injury ravaged again.
Usually, in the past when they haven't played so well, they've got a response under Ten Hag.

It's all about getting the balance right. It's been a struggle right from the off. They could never find that cutting edge.
Bayern had another three or four gears to go up to. If they wanted more, they could have.
