Manchester United are still alive, which has to be taken as a positive, even if they have lacked a goal threat.

Rasmus Hojlund is not winning his physical battle with Dayot Upamecano and Alejandro Garnacho is struggling to make any impact.

Antony has been lively but has not had enough possession.

  2. Union Berlin lead Real Madridpublished at 20:51 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2023

HT: Union Berlin 1-0 Real Madrid

Wow. Scenes in the home end as Luka Modric's penalty for Real Madrid is saved and on the break Kevin Volland scores to put Union Berlin in front.

As it stands, Union are up to third in Group C, and Real are facing their first Champions League defeat of the season.

In the group's other game, Napoli are leading Braga 2-0.

A late flurry from Manchester United but Bayern Munich keep them at arm's length before the whistle goes for half time.

Not the greatest half of football in Group A's other match.

Results elsewhere are falling in Manchester United's favour. They just need a goal now.

Some of the last ditch defending from Manchester United has been very good but you've got to carry a threat.

Good sliding block by Bruno Fernandes to get in the way of Harry Kane's shot on the edge of the box.

Almost half time and Manchester United can be happy that they have limited Bayern Munich to few clear chances, but they need to offer more threat themselves. At the moment they don't look like they are playing a game they need to win.

There's no combination play. Poor Hojlund is up there on his own and he must be wondering when the opportunities are going to come.

  10. Maguire blowpublished at 20:44 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2023

I am not entirely sure what Harry Maguire was thinking as he came back on then.

He was obviously in discomfort and he was only either going to make it worse or end up in a race he could not win - or both.

Jonny Evans has vast experience but his fitness is not reliable. Erik ten Hag has gone for that option over Luke Shaw moving to centre half and Sergio Reguilon coming on.

Defensively, it is probably a wise choice.

Scott McTominay cuts out Kingsley Coman's pass on the edge of the Manchester United area and then sends Alejandro Garnacho away.

The winger charges all the way up the pitch and into the box but then runs into Dayot Upamecano, who calmly takes the ball from his feet and clears.

That's a massive blow for Manchester United. There's a lot to be admired about Harry Maguire after his days looked to be numbered.

Evans is on and he's no spring chicken.

  13. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 39 mins

Harry Maguire tries for about five seconds but he knows he can't continue, putting the ball out himself so he can go off.

    Jonny Evans replaces him.

You have a good idea when you have an injury. The look on Maguire's face suggests he's not happy.

A bit of treatment and a bit of a stretch and Harry Maguire is trying to play on here. He doesn't look comfortable, however.

This could be a blow for Manchester United.

Harry Maguire has pulled something and is struggling. He's down on the grass and receiving treatment.

  17. Elsewhere in the Champions Leaguepublished at 20:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2023

Some brilliant goals to tell you about from elsewhere. Victor Osimhen has just scored his first European goal of the season, backheeling in Natan's cross.

Napoli are now leading Braga 2-0.

And Benfica have just gone ahead against Red Bull Salzburg, direct from an Angel Di María corner. It's 1-0 in Austria.

Manchester United's Champions League campaign has been scarred by matches where they have had the initiative and contrived to lose it.

Against far superior opposition, United are holding their own tonight.

Can they find a way to win this one?
