  2. 'Professional, but we could have been better'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 5 October 2023

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Union Saint-Gilloise

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to TNT Sports after the Europa League victory over Union Saint-Gilloise: "Good. Really good start. Lost the rhythm slightly. Gave too many set-pieces away. Really good beginning, lost rhythm and played too much around the formation and in the formation. Should have had more direction and you take and what you get in these moment,. Professional but we could have been better."

On Ryan Gravenberch's first Liverpool goal: "He is a top bloke and I am really happy for him. In his time in Bayern was not the end of the world but he played 35 games which is quite reasonable for a young players. But now he can get rhythm and you see that when he is on the ball. When we can bring him in the right places he is really incredible. Everybody is really pleased for him. It was maybe not the most difficult goal he's scored in his career but a goal is a goal.

    "They all count the same."

On rotation and substitutions "If we can do it, I think we should try it. It is only short turnaround for Brighton. Last year we were awful there so we have to do better. I hate thinking about the game after the game but in these quick turnarounds we have to. We don't have two strikers available for the next game so we have to do it."

What can you take from tonight? "Job done. That is important as well. You cannot only win if you are really exciting. It is good for us as we can learn a lot from this game. With rhythm we look one way and without we look another. With exactly the same players. Plenty of things to learn and we will use that."

  3. One Europa loss in 22published at 22:35 British Summer Time 5 October 2023

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Union Saint-Gilloise

Liverpool have lost just one of their 22 home games in the Europa League (5%, W16 D5); only Benfica have lost a lower percentage of their home games in the competition (since 2009-10), among teams to play at least 20 games (0%, W20 D6).

They've also won all eight of their European home games against sides from Belgium by an aggregate score of 19-5, keeping four clean sheets.

  4. 'It probably wasn't very exciting'published at 22:29 British Summer Time 5 October 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Zrinjski Mostar

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins speaking to TNT Sports: "Last-minute winner is a great feeling. A lot of people would've taken that, a little bit of entertainment at the end. A good goal from McGinn and a great atmosphere."

On how it felt when John McGinn scored the late winner: "I didn't even score the goal but I was buzzing and obviously we won the game. I thought the first half was a little bit flat. When a team comes here and banks up behind the ball it is very difficult and you have to be patient. As a fan watching it probably wasn't very exciting but it was in the end for them for sure."

On the objective when he was brought off the bench: "If you're coming onto the pitch you want to try and bring a little bit of energy and speed to the game. I tried to do that but there wasn't much opportunity for me get in behind them, that's what I like to do, have the grass in front of me.

"It was very difficult. They had so many men in the box when we were crossing the ball but we found a way in the end. When we play them next there going to have to come out and try and get a goal early-doors so hopefully that leaves a little more room for us."

On the penalty shout: "He's really close to me, I'm just trying to guide it towards goal. It would've been harsh if it was a penalty to be fair. I couldn't even appeal because I'm looking at the floor. It's one of them. I'm glad McGinn got his goal at the end and it gives us a bit of breathing room going into the next few games."

Brothers Alexis and Kevin Mac Allister have been talking to TNT Sports about the match tonight, and how it is "very emotional" for the whole family to see them play against one another in Europe. Here's what the two Mac Allisters said:

    Alexis:

"[It was] really nice. Of course for the family [it is] something very emotional. I have played against my older brother before and never against Kevin so it is special for my family.

"Today my dad was here but I am sure everybody in our family was watching the TV so it was special. My dad played and knows what it means to play your brother as my uncle was too. I guess he cried a little bit."

Will you swap shirts? Yeah, we will. I don't know if he wants from another players, but we will for sure."

    Here's what Kevin said:

"[It was] very amazing for my family and for my team. For us it is great to be here. We wanted to win here today and it is difficult. Liverpool are a great team. I try to enjoy. It is difficult against a big team and I want to enjoy this moment, My family stay here and it is a big moment.

"He is the reason I suffer today but it is a very special moment. Of course, Liverpool in the last match come to Belgium. It is our revenge maybe but today I am only thinking in this game with Alexis and my family and now it is the best part of the match."

Emery can't start that same team in this competition going forwards. Its clear the fringe players aren't good enough.

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch speaking to TNT Sports after scoring in the Europa League victory over Union Saint-Gilloise: "It's great. It feels super good. It was the best goal of career so far I think.

"It doesn't matter [how it comes]. A goal is a goal."

What has changed at Liverpool, compared to Bayern Munich? "I think the minutes. When you give a player minutes you get confident and that's it."

On settling in: "They are really nice, a really good group. Also young players and I am just enjoying it.

"I like it. I like it. I think Liverpool did a great job to buy such good players and we are in such a good mood."

How much did your standing ovation mean? "A lot, a lot. I am very happy that they give me such a good feeling and I want to give them something back."

  11. 'It's a lesson for us'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 5 October 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Zrinjski Mostar

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa captain John McGinn speaking to TNT Sports: "If anyone watched the Scotland and England game then that one haunted me for a couple of weeks. I seemed to lose my neck. Thankfully, Cashy put in a great cross so we could snatch it at the end.

"Towards the last 10 minutes, we started making poor decisions. I remember when I used to shoot from all angles when chasing a goal but the manager urges us to get it wide. Leon was causing them problems, Cashy too. I think it's a lesson for us. We need to be patient and we'll get the goals."

Important win: "It's huge because of how we started the group. Tonight was a must win. We didn't play well in the first half."

Half-time changes: "A lot of attacking threat. I don't think it was anything to do with the boys who went off."

  12. Postpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 5 October 2023

Everyone in Aston Villa's group is on three points with a goal difference of 0.

Zrinjski are top and Villa are bottom. AZ Alkmaar and Legia in between. Don't think we have to worry about tiebreakers too much after two games mind.

There's only one thing I ever wish for when Liverpool are in the Europa League and that's nobody comes away injured. A wins a bonus but coming away unscathed and ready for the league is the major plus...

The last time Villa won a European group game was in the Uefa Cup back in November 2008. John Carew scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Slavia Prague.

Since then they had played Rapid Vienna in qualifying in two separate seasons (going out both times), and beat Hibernian in the Conference play-off round this season.
