West Ham manager David Moyes, speaking to TNT Sports, on whether the illness which has recently spread through his squad has eased:

"At the moment it has but at this time of the year it sounds like so many people have got some form of bug. At the moment we're alright.

"I don't think I can remember a week off this season except for the international breaks but we go again and we're ready. We know how important the game is.

"We want to be top of the group. We understand the magnitude of not having another two games in February and avoiding a team of Champions League quality.

"We will aim to win the game tonight."

  8. Moyes doubts becoming distractionpublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2023

West Ham v Freiburg (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport reporter

The debate over the future of manager David Moyes seems to be becoming a bit of a distraction for West Ham.

Moyes' contract runs out at the end of the season and as yet, there has been no suggestion the Scot is going to get another.

There has been talk of a move 'upstairs' and Moyes himself didn't want to get into discussion about it ahead of the Europa League group decider with Freiburg.

But it won't help anyone if Moyes continues to get peppered by questions about his future into the New Year.

It does seem remarkable given last season's European triumph that the discussions are even needed but then results like the 5-0 defeat at Fulham just fuel the arguments of those who believe a change would be beneficial.

The debate is not going to stop until there is clarity over what Moyes' future holds.

Following their 2-1 win over SC Freiburg, West Ham are looking to beat a German side twice in a European season for the first time ever.

This will be Freiburg’s first away match in England in a European competition.

West Ham have won their past nine home games in all European competitions.

James Ward-Prowse has created 21 chances in the Europa League this season, more than any other player.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi has said he wants the "prestige" of winning their Europa League group.

The Seagulls, who are guaranteed at least second place in Group B, host leaders Marseille needing a win to top the pool and book their place in the last 16.

Failure to win would mean they enter February's play-offs.

"Marseille are a very good team, but we have the ambition to finish top of our group," De Zerbi said.

"It is a prestigious thing to finish at the top of the table, because we will play two games less in February, and also for the history of our club.

"We want to try to win because we are serious people. When we work, we always want to show our best and do our best."

  11. 'West Ham are doing well in Europe'published at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2023

West Ham v Freiburg (20:00 GMT)

    Michael Brown
    Former Tottenham midfielder

I covered the game against Spurs and it was a brilliant performance with some big displays all over the pitch from West Ham. Then, it was disappointing in the defeat at Fulham.

They have to put every single thing into it when they try and win games as they have a lot of matches. They are missing a couple of players and at times they just come unstuck with the levels.

In December, we have to be careful against being over-critical. It was a top win against Spurs, a disappointing next result, but I think they are still in a really healthy position.

We all want to play the perfect style and in the perfect way, but look how many games Moyes has managed. He is a workaholic and they have a really experienced manager at the helm who understands everything about the game.

If the board decide they want a different style of football, then fine. But I think he is doing a brilliant job. They started really well this season and are still in ninth. I understand fans want to see the most amazing football, but sometimes that is a fairytale.

When you have not got the squad set-up, it takes time to build. It is tight in the Europa League to see if they can finish top of their group, but regardless they are going well.

    FT: Union Saint-Gilloise 2-1 Liverpool

A night which had no significance in terms of the result for Liverpool but Jurgen Klopp will not have wanted to suffer defeat.

They have a strong European record and they were poor tonight.

Plenty of youngsters had an opportunity but it wasn't a game in which many of them impressed.

Still, Liverpool are through to the knockout stages as group winners so job done.

Lovely cross from Harvey Elliott. He earns Liverpool a corner as Curtis Jones' pressure leads to the keeper punching it out of play.

In a mad few seconds, Caoimhin Kelleher comes up for it, Liverpool have a few shots blocked, Union Saint-Gilloise break and Kelleher sprints back before the full-time whistle goes!
