    FT: Slovenia 4-2 Northern Ireland

Three defeats in a row has now become four for Northern Ireland as they were beaten 4-2 by Slovenia in Ljubljana.

There were positives in attack for manager Michael O'Neill, particularly from Conor McMenamin as well as Shea Charles in midfield, but their defence was exposed too often as the goals were conceded.

With just three points from their five Euro 2024 Group H games, tonight's loss all-but confirms that qualification for next summer's finals is beyond Northern Ireland.

O'Neill must now take his injury-hit squad to Kazakhstan for Sunday's qualifier as they aim to end what is now a worrying losing streak.

Thanks for joining us - we will be back to do it all over again on Sunday. Goodnight.

The outstanding performance for me and the best player on the pitch by a mile was Shea Charles.

He is the type of player you would come just to watch. He makes it look so easy and he doesn't look like he's trying too hard.

We gave them goals, we weren't under any serious pressure when we made the mistakes, it was just bad individual errors.

For me, this campaign is over. It's about blooding those young lads and giving them experience for when that new campaign comes around.

The big disappointment will be the goals but we created a lot of chances which is a big positive.

I think Slovenia deserved the win, but I think the 4-2 score-line flatters them.

    Slovenia 4-2 Northern Ireland

It's all over in Ljubljana as hosts Slovenia beat Northern Ireland 4-2 in an action-packed encounter.

Michael O'Neill's men looked dangerous on the attack for most of the match but their defending let them down, which is why they suffered what is a fourth defeat in a row in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Conor McMenamin and Shea Charles were bright sparks for the visitors but O'Neill's men fell short as they looked to end that mini losing streak.

Andraz Sporar goes round Peacock-Farrell and looks to have scored a fifth but Jonny Evans gets back to hang a foot out and clear off the line.

Superb defending right at the death from the Manchester United man.

Have Northern Ireland got another chance or two in them?

Just less than three minutes left.

Peacock-Farrell's been good, his footwork and his kicking have been very good on a terrible pitch, in the 18-yard box. It doesn't look like there's any even surface at all.

I've never seen Northern Ireland create so many chances ever, we just can't score.

It might sounds far-fetched but those three chances could easily have at least brought Northern Ireland level.

And just as I write that, Conor McMenamin cuts inside and fires in a good strike but Jan Oblak is able to palm it away.

Make that three gilt-edged chanced for Northern Ireland in about five minutes!

Again a visiting player has space in the box - this time Conor McMenamin - but again they fire straight at Jan Oblak, with McMenamin failing to get any power behind his close-range header.

  14. Another chance missedpublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 7 September 2023

    Slovenia 4-2 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland come desperately close again!

Just a minute after Paul Smyth strikes straight at Jan Oblak from close range, Josh Magennis finds the home keeper with a free header.

It was nice trickery and a lovely cross from Smyth to set up the chance.

    Huge chance for Northern Ireland!

A corner is headed on by Jonny Evans and it sat nicely for Paul Smyth to swivel and shoot but he doesn't catch it properly and it's easily saved by Jan Oblak.

Northern Ireland look for the diagonal long ball again and Conor Washington gets in down the left.

Conor McMenamin lends support and wins a corner.

  17. Yet ANOTHER NI injurypublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 7 September 2023

    Slovenia 4-2 Northern Ireland

Craig Cathcart is the latest Northern Ireland player to get injured and he's forced off.

His replacement, somewhat surprisingly, is QPR attacker Paul Smyth.

Cathcart, remember, only came on as a first-half sub for the injured Ciaron Brown.

We've stopped doing what we were doing well in the first half. I don't know if that's tired legs but it's blatantly obvious that we haven't got the ball to Conor McMenamin, he hasn't had a run at the full back at all.

Jonny Evans tries to find Josh Magennis with a long, diagonal ball over the top but he overhits his pass and it runs through to the home keeper.

    Eighteen minutes on the clock.

Northern Ireland need a goal. And quickly!
