  1. What is the format?published at 19:08 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

A new tournament means we all need a crash course in learning how it all works. We've got you covered.

The three-league tournament follows a similar format to the men's event. Teams have been divided into the leagues based on Uefa's coefficient rankings.

England, Scotland and Wales are in League A, which has four groups made up of teams ranked one to 16.

The teams play each other home and away from September to December, with the standings at the end of the stage determining promotion and relegation between the leagues, as well as qualification for the Women's Nations League finals.

World Cup runners-up England are in Group A1, along with Scotland, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Wales are in Group A3 alongside Germany, who are ranked sixth in the world, plus Denmark and Iceland, while world champions Spain are in the same group as world number two side Sweden.

World Cup finalists England are without midfielder Keira Walsh through injury so that is one of three changes to the side who lost to Spain in Australia.

Manchester United captain Katie Zelem comes in for Walsh in midfield, Chloe Kelly returns up front and Lauren James is back in the starting XI for the first time since her World Cup sending off, replacing Ella Toone.

Aston Villa striker Rachel Daly leads the line, moving from left wing-back, as Alessia Russo is rested.

England XI: Earps, Bronze, Carter, Zelem, Greenwood, Bright, Kelly, Stanway, Daly, James, Hemp.

Subs: Nobbs, Hampton, Toone, Morgan, Charles, Coombs, Parker, Park, Le Tissier, Roebuck, Robinson, Staniforth.

Scotland boss Pedro Martinez Losa, who signed a contract extension today, has made four changes to the side who beat Finland 2-1 to extend their unbeaten run to six matches.

Emma Watson and Erin Cuthbert are not in the squad, while Lauren Davidson and Fiona Brown drop to the bench.

Their replacements are all experienced as captain Rachel Corsie, Claire Emslie, Christy Grimshaw and Martha Thomas all return.

Scotland XI: Alexander, Docherty, Corsie, Howard, Kerr, Weir, Hanson, McLauchlan, Emslie, Thomas, Grimshaw.

Subs: Fife, Cumings, Mukandi, Maclean, Brown, Evans, Gallacher, Clark, Rodgers, Davidson, Napier.

Domestically, a ball is yet to be kicked in the Women's Super League while the Scottish Premier League began in August.

But international football is back and for England it will be the first time they have been in action since that heart breaking night in Sydney just over a month ago, where they lost the World Cup final to Spain.

Scotland, meanwhile, are aiming to upset their neighbours in their own backyard with the match taking place at Sunderland's Stadium of Light - and there is more than just local pride at stake.
