That's it from Iceland, where Wales are left frustrated having come away with nothing on the opening night of the Nations League despite having plenty of possession.

Gemma Grainger's side could not conjure the moment of quality needed to respond after Glodis Viggosdottir's 18th-minute goal.

They will do it all again in Cardiff on Tuesday, when Denmark are their opponents.

That is likely to be an even sterner examination for Grainger's side as they look to mix it with some of Europe's best teams.

We will be there to take you through all the action once again.

I don't think scoring goals is a one-person issue. The players are more than capable, you see them doing it for their clubs at a good level.

Something is just not quite clicking in those areas. We're not used to playing a side that banks in when we have loads of possession and it's a different skill when the onus is on you to create.

I've no doubt the players have it in them, it's about putting it into practice on the pitch.

I don't know how many corners Iceland got but it can't have been more than two or three.

For one of those to go into the net is really disappointing - to leave their captain in that much space is a mistake.

It's a quick turnaround for Denmark, they'll be back on the training ground on Sunday ready to put it right. Yes Denmark have had a great result tonight but let's make the Cardiff City Stadium a difficult place to go on Tuesday.

  5. 'Fine margins cost us' - Inglepublished at 21:15 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

    FT Iceland 1-0 Wales

Wales captain Sophie Ingle told Match of the Day Wales:

"I'm frustrated, we dominated the game and they had one corner and scored from it.

"I'm not sure they had many more chances, I'm really frustrated we couldn't get at least a draw.

"There's five games to go, with the first away from home it's always tough and they made it hard for us.

"It's just disappointing because we did dominate.

"Our girls will be frustrated, but we've put in a great performance against a side ranked much higher than us, I think we can take the positives and put that into Denmark.

"Small tweaks, more clinical and more bodies in the box."

Too many times in the final third players made the wrong decision, at times we were sloppy with our passing.

With the amount of possession we had, to not work the goalkeeper enough is disappointing.

  8. 'Frustration' for Wales boss Graingerpublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

    FT: Iceland 1-0 Wales

Wales manager Gemma Grainger told Match of the Day Wales:

"Initial feelings are frustration, I feel we dominated the game, but when you play against the best teams the small margins matter.

"Conceding the set-play is disappointing because we had long periods in possession and we played how we wanted to play, we just didn't get the goal.

"I think the final third of the pitch is an area everyone wants to work on. We definitely have our style and how we want to score goals. Iceland are very good out of possession but it's the fine margins we have to work on for Tuesday.

"We have to take it a game at a time. We'll prepare the best we can when we play Denmark in Cardiff."

I don't think there was too much between the teams.

Iceland were very organised and made it difficult.

We just seemed to run out of ideas in the end.

Iceland defended well but they weren't tested enough in and around their own box.

You think of the Carrie Jones chance, she snatched at it.

It's just disappointing. So much work went into it, when there was a bit more urgency they looked like they could score, but there was just a lack of composure and belief.

I'm really disappointed because I thought we were clearly the better team.

But it's about sticking the ball in the back of the net. The second half was a continuation of the first half.

In and around the box, the decision-making and the quality just wasn't there.

We just lacked a bit of edge, we needed a bit of spark.

We had lots of possession but we have got to make that count. Our end product and decision-making in the final third really let us down tonight.

So many time it's been so close to really good play, just letting it run under your foot or just a bit too much on the pass and it hasn't fallen for Wales.

Elise Hughes is going to score, I'm calling it now.
