    Wolves 0-1 Tottenham

    Lucy Ward
Former Leeds striker on TNT Sports

It's a really good dummy from Porro and then he backs it up with a perfect ball into the six yard box.

Johnson is the only man that Wolves didn't pick up and it's a confident finish into the net.

He had an unlucky start, couple of injuries so he dropped out of the starting lineup, but that will be a huge confidence boost for him.

I hope all the action happens in the Wolves half, because nobody can see the other half of the pitch.

    Tom

Well Tom, that goal came at the end bathed in light. It's all looking very sunny for Tottenham.

    Perfect start for Spurs!

Stick that in your understrength team! Spurs' first real attack ends with a superb low pass from Pedro Porro into a spot in the six-yard box from which Brennan Johnson cannot miss.

A first Tottenham goal for the ex-Forest forward. Timed it to perfection.

Completely agree with Lee (12:22). I would also pause offside VARs until it becomes pretty much instantaneous and automatic (similar to Hawkeye for the goal line decisions). The joy of celebrating goals for me has been diminished by the potential reviews.

    Mikey

Clear and obvious errors are apparent within seconds. Any that would take minutes to decide are not clear and obvious so on field decisions stand. Also make the process open to viewers on TV and at ground.

    Wolves 0-0 Tottenham

It's another big test of Tottenham's credentials to last the pace this season. This is a tough ground to visit and they're lacking some key figures.

Wolves are without a big man themselves in Pedro Neto and aiming to bounce back from a grating loss.

    We are under way.

Postecoglou not changing his philosophy seems to be seen as advantage by pundits - dogmatic approach over pragmatism. Elements of Bielsa I fear.

    Alan

100% agree with Charlie Adams’ statement regarding Kane leaving, allowing Spurs to play Postecoglou’s way.. Exactly the same happened with Coutinho at Liverpool for Klopp

    • Half of the 18 Premier League meetings between Wolves and Tottenham have been won by the away side – of all fixtures to have been played as many times, only Leicester against Manchester City (54%) has been won more often by the away team.
    • Wolves have scored at least once in each of their past 10 Premier League games, though they have only kept one clean sheet in their past 14.
    • Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou suffered his first Premier League defeat on Monday in his 11th game in the competition, with only Maurizio Sarri (12 games) and Frank Clark (11 games) having longer unbeaten starts.
    • Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan has been involved in eight Premier League goals this season (6 goals, 2 assists), his best return in a single campaign in the competition.
    • In their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, Spurs received two red cards in a Premier League game for only the fourth time, and first time ever in a home game. In the competition this season, only Wolves (38) and Chelsea (36) have picked up more cards than Spurs (34 – 31 yellows, 3 reds).

This situation is the first speed bump on the road for Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, but I expect him to come through it. There is just something special about him.

There is nothing about Spurs that suggests that they are going to be meek and shy today. They will be looking to react well and put in a performance after that first league defeat versus Chelsea.

This Tottenham team would not play the same if Harry Kane was still upfront.

Harry is a top class striker, but in hindsight I think there is a lot of positives in him leaving the building for Ange Postecoglou to enforce the way he wants Tottenham to play.

You look at the front three and they are aggressive which also press well.

They ended their 4-1 defeat against Chelsea with just four players who had started the game still on the field of play (Vicario, Son, Porro, Bissouma). It’s the joint fewest players in a starting XI to complete 90 minutes in a Premier League match, along with Crystal Palace vs Fulham in December 2022 (Guaita, Zaha, Andersen, Ayew).

My solution to VAR is keep it purely for offsides and matters that technology can conclusively decide. Anything down to interpretation should be left to the on-field referee, regardless of the outcome. This is where most of the problems lies, as technology doesn't eradicate a human interpretation, which differs person to person; and club to club.

    Wolves v Tottenham (12:30 GMT)

Wolves v TottenhamImage source, BBC Sport

It was incredible to watch what Ange Postecoglou tried to do by keeping such a high line when Tottenham went down to nine men against Chelsea.

I was a fan of his at Celtic, and I know he likes to do things differently, but I'd never seen anything like that in my lifetime - and I loved it.

They lost 4-1 in the end but had chances at 2-1 and came so close to getting a draw.

Spurs are depleted now with injuries to James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie suspended, so it's going to be a patched-up Tottenham side at Molineux.

Postecoglou is not going to change the way he plays, but of course all of those absences will have an impact.

Wolves were very unlucky to lose to a late Sheffield United penalty last week - it looked like a dive to me - and they have been much improved in recent weeks. On that basis, I'm going for a draw.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Tom's prediction: Spurs could start to capitulate after what happened against Chelsea, but I actually think they will bounce back and win. 0-2

Joe's prediction: I think Wolves will score first. I will get dead excited and start watching the game, and then Spurs will fight back and win. That's usually how it goes - I did it the other day when Luton went ahead against Liverpool in the 80th minute, but then conceded in injury time. 1-2

Suggs' prediction: I'm going to go with Wolves, which will get some of my mates going - plus my son-in-law and his family are all Wolves fans so I have got to back them. 2-0

Josh: Refereeing now seems we have gone from the almost tolerable "human error" to the inability of adults to use technology with VAR. Maybe the VAR team need to bring their kids to work, to show their parents how to use it.

Make it more like cricket. Both teams have TWO reviews, they can appeal to the referee to review it, otherwise the on field decision remains. The review should take place after stoppage, no matter how long after the incident.

    Wolves v Tottenham (12:30 GMT)

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou suffered his first Premier League defeat last time out in his 11th game in the competition (W8 D2), with only Maurizio Sarri (12 games) and Frank Clark (11 games) having longer unbeaten starts.

He hasn’t lost consecutive league games as a manager since between November 2020 and February 2021 with Yokohama F. Marinos in the Japanese J1 League (three in a row).

In today's game it is a neccesity for a player to feel loved. The impact it can have on an individual is huge.

In our era it wasn't really a consideration to treat players differently, I've had managers admit that they struggled to compliment players individually.

Coaches respect what the players need individually now, and not assume that people can give 100% effort with just tough love.

All professional players should have to take a refereeing course and have to referee a (junior equivalent) match once a season.

    Graham, Sutton

VAR is appalling- intervening way too much and then getting the simplest decisions wrong. Easy answer is both teams before match vote " do you want VAR on or off today?" If both vote we want it switched off , no VAR for that game and officials make all decisions- simple.

What I watched from Tottenham the other night against Chelsea was the most incredible thing I have ever seen.

The bravery they showed with Son Heung-min nearly getting his goal and Eric Dier’s goal ruled out by an absolute fraction... I do not think the result will affect them in any way going forward, not one bit.

I have ultimate respect for what they did. I was sat watching the TV and thinking, 'This high line is unbelievable'. I did think it could be 4-1 the way they were playing, but they almost did it. For them, it did not matter if they lost 2-1 or 4-1. It was the fact they almost won and got something from it - and were trying to win it.

Ultimately, they lost the game because of a poor decision from a player. Cristian Romero got a red card with a tackle he could have avoided and that changed the whole outcome. Not only was it a penalty, it was a red card and that was a moment of madness that changed the whole outcome.

Other than that, I think they came away with much more respect. I am covering the game against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium and that will be the game where they will really be tested to see if they can be up and around the title race

They can still go to Wolves with great confidence but the injuries are where they could come unstuck.

However, they do have Eric Dier coming back in and I think he is a player who can step right back in. Mr Reliable, Mr Spurs. It is a good opportunity for him.

It is slightly worrying the amount of players that have missing but it is an opportunity for some other good players.

Wolves players protest to refereeImage source, Getty Images

Former Chelsea and Scotland winger Pat Nevin speaking to BBC Sport: "Arsenal fans will still be angry today. They probably think they are particularly hard done by. I’m afraid you don’t even come close to the most-wronged team this season.

"I regularly claim to dislike talking about refereeing decisions over and above the pure football, but I will admit that I have already started a list of my top refereeing errors of the season. I am beginning to see a trend developing.

"Wolverhampton Wanderers not getting a late penalty, and thus potentially a point at Old Trafford, on the opening day easily cruises into my top three refereeing blunders. Also up there is Wolves’ Hwang being penalised in the recent Newcastle game. That penalty kick arguably cost them two more points.

"Amazingly, another howler hit Wolves this weekend when Sheffield United were awarded a 97th-minute spot-kick that won the game for them. Fabio Silva did not foul Baldock. In fact, I would argue that Baldock initiated the contact, he wasn’t even going for the ball. Another point unfairly taken away from Gary O'Neil's side.

"Wolves sit 14th in the Premier League on 12 points. They should have 16 points, which would make them joint 8th. Manchester United would obviously have two fewer points, in case you go and check the table.

"Many teams can complain about refereeing decisions, but it is Wolves who should really be howling at the moon."
