Celtic's appeal for supporters to refrain from showing banners, flags and symbols that relate to the Israel-Gaza war has been ignored.

The Green Brigade section displays a very large Palestine flag with others placed across the far stand.

It was noted by the Uefa delegate in the build up. It remains to be seen what action, if any, follows as a result from Uefa and indeed the club.

Atletico Madrid's starting XI tonight has an average age of 30 years and 164 days - their oldest ever in a Champions League match.

Here's a wee ray of hope for Celtic... Atletico Madrid are winless in their last five Champions League away games (D1 L4).

They finished bottom of a group containing Porto, Bayer Leverkusen and Club Brugge last time, which was a major surprise.

They also slipped to a few shock defeats in the league last season at the likes of Elche and Cadiz.

They have to win. That Feyenoord result really puts pressure on Celtic to do that.

Feyenoord are now sitting top of Group E following a 3-1 victory over Lazio in Rotterdam.

The Dutch side, who beat Celtic on week one, are on six points from three outings.

You have to go back 11 years to the Barcelona game to find a time when Celtic pulled off a proper upset in the Champions League group stage, against a team with bigger players and a bigger budget.

It's a long time.

Atletico have won their last six games, a run which started with a 3-1 derby triumph against Real Madrid.

A remarkable header from Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel deep in stoppage time denied them an opening victory in this group, while they twice trailed at home to Feyenoord before prevailing 3-2.

They were 3-0 winners away to Celta Vigo on Saturday courtesy of a hat-trick from Antoine Griezmann. That leaves them fourth in La Liga, three points behind leaders Real, but with a game in hand on the teams above them.

Brendan Rodgers mentioned concentration more than once yesterday.

"If you drop your guard for a second, you can get punished," he said.

Three weeks ago, Lazio did just that, scoring deep into stoppage time for a sucker-punch win at Celtic Park, pouncing on a lapse from Cameron Carter-Vickers.

"The pain was numbing at the end because we didn’t feel we deserved that," Rodgers reflected.

Atletico Madrid are an interesting team. When they play the big boys, it's a real defensive structure.

I've also seen them really press the lesser teams. We don't know how they'll look at Celtic. They're very effective in both ways and have real balance in the team.

If Diego Simeone has any faith in omens, he could be preparing for yet another final.

Atletico have gone all the way in each of the three previous campaigns when they've faced Celtic – the 1973-74 European Cup, the 1985-86 Cup Winners Cup and the 2011-12 Europa League.

Atletico have found impressive stability and success under Diego Simeone, who is coming up for his 12th anniversary in the post.

In that time he's delivered two La Liga titles, two Europa Leagues, two Uefa Super Cups, and a Copa del Ray.

This tournament has evaded him, finishing as a runner-up in 2014 and 2016 - losing to city rivals Real both times. Ouch!

Diego Simeone was quick to brush aside questions about the 1974 meeting, which took place when he was five-years-old in Buenos Aires.

The Atletico manager was too busy gushing with praise for tonight's hosts.

"Celtic is a tough rival, with some really strong players," he said. "I really admire the way they play football and it is going to be a tough game.

"In their games against Lazio and Feyenoord, especially in the first 60-70 minutes, they played at a really high tempo. They are good in transition and have a strong system that they stuck to.

"They will press you in your own half and playing here, it is a really historic stadium.

"As well as the history of 1974, my father told me about 1967 when they played Racing Club (in the Intercontinental Cup). It’s a huge club. One of the most famous in the world."

"It’s a great gesture from the club and it’s an important part of the club’s history," said captain Koke.

"While it is good to have those people with us and memories are a big part of football, it is a completely different game now.

"We are just focused on the game. It doesn’t really matter what colour of shirts we are wearing, they could be red or they could be red and white."

Recently retired BBC Radio 5 Live correspondent Roddy Forsyth said that 1974 game in Glasgow "surpassed brutality".

"Jimmy Johnstone was the clear and obvious target of sustained assaults," he told BBC Scotland yesterday. "His treatment was like a game of pass the parcel in which the parcel was booted by every Atletico player."

The atmosphere should be absolutely electric in a tie Celtic really have to get something against a star-studded Atletico Madrid.

Their European Cup semi-final encounter in 1974 still rankles for many in the home crowd. Celtic players were on the receiving end of an astonishing sequence of quite incredible fouls. Assaults really, in truth. It was as far from the beautiful game as you could imagine.

The tactic worked, though, with the eight-man Spaniards escaping with a 0-0 before winning the return to reach their first European Cup final. They lost that to Bayern Munich but took their place in the, then, prestigious Intercontinental Cup final which they won. As a result that side are legends of their club.

Atletico's decision to honour them with a similar kit tonight has ruffled a few feathers, with some seeing it as provocative. The Spanish club argue they are celebrating heroes who are a big part of their history.

Whatever your interpretation, it's all sure to add to the decibel level inside this arena. What a night lies in store.
