  1. 'We are not consistent enough'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We did many things wrong today. Bournemouth deserved the win today; they were more intense than us, more eager than us. We should have performed better. We should expect the intensity of the game.

"We are not consistent enough. If you wan to be in the top spots, you have to do it every three days. It is about understanding we need our level every game; if you drop your levels a little bit, you get punished."

  2. 'We weren't in the right focus'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Man United 0-3 Bournemouth

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to Match of the Day: “At the start of the game we weren’t in the right focus. We gave a goal away that can’t happen. Mistake in the build-up okay but then we need better positions they shouldn’t come easily through and score the goal from that. We knew that beforehand and from that point on you’re following facts.

"We tried we were in the game we had a lot of tempo, came in their half and came good into the box. Brilliance or the movement in the box we are not good enough. The same after half-time we tried to get equaliser and the breakdown was the second goal.

On lack of cutting edge: “That’s always the question. You have to start right and 100% focused, when you don’t everyone is eager. It can’t happen when the opponent is more eager than you are.

“We had good spells of football only moments where our positions aren’t good enough. You can't make such mistakes at this level, opponents will take benefit from it. You can't switch off and that’s what happened.

"We have to work on that if we want to be successful. If you want to reach the targets you’ve set you have to be consistent."

Message to fans: "I understand disappointment and frustration, we are as well but we should do better. We have to show it every game and not from one game the the game, such big difference in levels."

On lifting players ahead of the game against Bayern Munich: “We know we are able to do it. We showed in the week we had some good performances. We have to leave this behind but talk about it . We need to be consistent we can play against many opponents a very good game we are able to do it but you have to do it every day so to get it right and that demands a certain standard so we have to go to higher standards to deliver it."

Not sure Arsenal's mettle can be questioned, Nick.

They've come back to earn a point in each of the two games this season where they trailed at the break - against Fulham and Chelsea - and of course fought back to beat Luton in midweek.

That said, Villa are a different proposition on current form. This is how the table will look if things stay as they are...

You have to give it to Villa and Emery, they look excellent this season, what a job! Real test of Arsenal here though, second half, if they really want to be considered as contenders.

Arsenal haven't been at their best but Aston Villa started very well.

Overall, it doesn't matter. Villa are going in 1-0 up.

The problem with Arsenal in this game is we're taking too many touches in Villas box, even outside it... we just need to calm down and take our time... and then hopefully we'd equalise, one can only hope!

I think you're forgetting Liverpool Zac, but even the mighty Reds would struggle here. Villa Park is officially a fortress.

A properly engaging half of football. Aston Villa have been superb and full of intensity.

Something isn't quite clicking for Arsenal.

Even more so if you're of a Villa persuasion.

Arsenal break quickly and have an overload on the left.

But Villa regroup and a body gets in the way to help loop Gabriel Martinelli's cross over the bar.

Ah, Martinelli was offside anyway and the flag belatedly goes up.

Unai Emery proving what a quality manager he is. He always had a tough job following Arsene Wenger at the Arsenal but the quality and tactical know-how has always been there.

Excellent stop from Emi Martinez! It keeps Villa in front.

Beautiful build-up from Arsenal as Gabriel Jesus's delicate touch tees up Martin Odegaard, who moves the ball into space before shooting low towards the bottom corner.

Martinez guessed where he was going and stops the equaliser.

Reminder for teams looking to poach Emery - he will do phenomenally if your team has 'villa' in your name (Sevilla, Villarreal, Aston Villa), but won't do as well if you don't (Arsenal, PSG). It's an unusual niche, but it's his!
