I'd like to see a trial period where Trent Alexander-Arnold starts in a deep six role where he can almost be the quarterback of the team because when he is on the ball with his head up, he just makes things happen in front of him. Players make runs, they know they can be found. It's a no-brainer. I'm all for seeing Trent in midfield.

"I have an amazing family, great friends. I try not to read or listen to it. It probably affected them a little bit more than it affected me to be honest."

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire talks to Football Focus presenter Alex Scott about how he deals with criticism and why he decided to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place.

Maguire adds: "He [Erik ten Hag] couldn't guarantee me games at the start of the season but he was very happy for me to stay and fight for my place. At the end of it, I chose that option.

"We know we should be doing a little bit better in the Premier League and other competitions as well, so we are striving for more."

Crystal Palace have only won one of their past eight league games and there is plenty of speculation about Roy Hodgson's long-term future, but I still think he will guarantee them Premier League safety.

I am not so sure they will get anything out of Liverpool, though. The Reds are on a great run of results that has put them right in the title race.

Liverpool's defence is not exactly convincing, but I have given them a clean sheet here. Palace are not a free-scoring side, and they need Eberechi Eze fit again as soon as possible.

You know how they will set up against Liverpool, and the question is whether Jurgen Klopp's side can break them down. I believe they will, although I don't think they will find it easy.

BBC Sport at Jurgen Klopp's pre-match news conference

It was not lost on Jurgen Klopp that his Liverpool side could go top with a win at Crystal Palace but, as he said: "Nobody became champion because they were top of the table on a Saturday at 2:15pm or whatever on matchday 16."

In a measured news conference, Klopp did not get involved in speaking about his side’s title chances and also was not interested in talking about getting three points in order to put pressure on leaders Arsenal before their game against Aston Villa.

Instead, the German emphasised the need for him and his team to be "100% focused" on getting three points against Palace.

On the progress his side are making, he said he was “happy we could show the right signs” after their struggles last season but “nothing has happened yet”.

Trevor: I was more concerned with Roy's comments after Wednesday's game. Being a Palace fan and season ticket holder for nearly 60 years, we never expect to blow teams away. I think it undermined every Palace fan. That was the worst performance I have witnessed from a Palace team. Defend, defend, defend - we were at home.

Kathryn: It was disgusting that our supporters booed at half-time and heckled our own players. We were doing the away fans' job for them - as they gleefully pointed out. Yes, the players and Roy need to do better - but so do we. Let's get behind our players against Liverpool - otherwise the scoreline could be a bloodbath.

  8. From winning Euros to playing with BBC Concert Orchestrapublished at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

We're used to seeing Leah Williamson deliver on the pitch for Arsenal and England.

Now she has taken up a new challenge - playing piano with the BBC Concert Orchestra in front of her family and Arsenal team-mates Jen Beattie and Kim Little.

"I wanted to put myself in a high pressure situation before I make my return to football," said England's Euro 2022 winning captain, who is seven months into an expected nine-month recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Williamson only began playing the piano during lockdown and said of her experience with the BBC Concert Orchestra: "It’s been a good learning process for me but as soon as I sat down at the piano my hands started shaking which is something I didn't foresee - not even the Euros final touched how I felt in that room.”

You can watch how she got on in episode one of Out of Office, which is on Football Focus on BBC One from 12:00 GMT.

Roy Hodgson after Palace's defeat against Bournemouth: "The fact is, the fans have been spoiled here in recent times. I think the players' efforts in the second half were worthy of some sort of support really. But the frustration is, [the fans] came tonight thinking this was going to be an easy win for Crystal Palace and it turned out to be a home defeat. We can't force the fans to stay behind them in those moments."

Hodgson at his pre-match news conference on Friday: "I am distressed by my comments and choice of word, which I bitterly regret. I would be devastated if they didn't think I appreciated them. I can understand their frustration so I owe them an apology because they've been so good to me during my five years at the club."

The general consensus seems to be that Nottingham Forest have got beat Wolves otherwise that will be it for Steve Cooper. Speaking to people in Nottingham, I find the fan base is relatively split.

Some people are completely with him and some people have said it is time. The 90 minutes at Molineux against a motivated Wolves team is going to tell us a lot about where Forest move from this point.

  16. Will Wilder calm Blades nerves?published at 11:25 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

Bottom club Sheffield United start the weekend five points from safety. A rare win over Brentford will calm a few nerves following the return of Chris Wilder.

Burnley will leapfrog 19th-placed Luton - who host Manchester City on Sunday (14:00 GMT) - with a win at Brighton, while defeat for Nottingham Forest at Wolves could spell disaster for boss Steve Cooper.

Liverpool will go to top - if only for a few hours - should they make it three Premier League wins in a row by winning at out-of-sorts Crystal Palace in the early kick-off.

The Reds start two points behind Arsenal, who play in the late game at in-form Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will end the day in the top five - level on points with Manchester City - if they defeat Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
