Earlier we had a tribute for the writer, poet and Villa fan Benjamin Zephaniah who passed away on Thursday.

Zephaniah was born and raised in Handsworth just down the road from Villa Park.

The club have played his Ode to Aston Villa v West Brom on its screens, a poem which he performed for the BBC back in 2015.

It was met with a standing ovation and warm round of applause from both sets of supporters.

The club also wrote in today's programme: "Zephaniah spoke so passionately about where he was born and raised and growing up in the shadows of the stadium.

"He was such an inspiration to so many people for so many reasons and will be sorely missed."

Villa Park looks like Caesars Palace. No pyros, no party.

'Hi Ho Aston Villa' is also being vociferously belted out, which means it is nearly show-time.

Right then, we all caught our breath? That was intense.

Not sure either Bournemouth or Manchester United fans will get over this afternoon in a hurry - for wildly different reasons.

    Let's push things forward.

The small matter of third-placed Aston Villa versus table-topping Arsenal...

  4. 'A moment of magic decided the game'published at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Sheffield United 1-0 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to MOTD: "It was a difficult game. Fair play to Sheffield United. They did well in a game that was even and tight. I felt there would be a magic moment that would decide the game and that came from Sheffield United and McAtee. I can't complain about the effort from my players.

"This is the Premier League. You can quickly run into a patch of games and you can lose four in five. Unfortunately it has happened right now. We have to keep going. Injuries don't help any team. I think we have a little bit too many."

  5. 'Shows how together everybody is'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Wolves 1-1 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper to Sky Sports: "We've missed a couple of the best chances of the game and that's on us even though we've created them through the gameplan and good pressure and good quality. The throw-in decision before their goal beggers belief really. They're not the only reason why we're too many games without a win but those things aren't going our way either. The ref knows and the linesman knows they've made a huge, huge error.

"If you look at the game in isolation and the context I'm proud of my team, proud of how we played. It's a positive away point and it's a point on the board. If you put that on top of the noise which hasn't crept into the training ground because we won't let that, all you see is a team who love playing for the football club and want to do well.

"It shows how together everybody is at the football club, the supporters completely dominated the atmosphere in the stadium. I think it's not a bad day's work with everything in mind in terms of the point we got. A big talking point about the refereeing decision."

On if it felt like the players were playing for him: "It's not about playing for me, it's about playing for each other. There's no individual more important than anybody else. There's no hierarchy in our football club, we're all level, we're all together.

"Everyone's valuing self worth and we want to be as high as possible. There's a real good connection at the football club that's been built on taking fear away and building hope we can achieve. It's a performance you'll be proud of, a little bit of frustration we haven't won the game. The boys really stood up and were counted."

  6. 'We feel like we can beat anyone'published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke speaking to PLP: “Magnificent. To win away at Old Trafford is touching for everyone really. One of the best stadiums in the world and one of the best clubs in the world so to come and win the boys are delighted.”

Asked whether this is one of the best results in the club’s history: “Yeah I’d probably say so and it shows the direction we are going in. I think I we’ve been building a lot in the last few weeks we are feeling confident we are feeling great.

"At the moment we feel like we can beat anyone and that showed today.

“I think just composure really. The stadium is magnificent. It's easy to probably get intimidated here but we kept our heads.

"We were confident on the ball kept playing and attacked when we could and kept pressing through the whole game. We are just delighted to get the result.”

On the club's upturn in form: “I think we’ve just started clicking really. A new manager, obviously coming in to the team. At the beginning we were still trying to kind of find our feet with a new philosophy.

"We’ve definitely started gelling in the last few weeks and it has showed on the pitch.

  7. 'Our squad has so many little gems'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Brighton 1-1 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, speaking to Match of the Day: "It was a game of two halves. The first half, the way we created chances was outstanding. The second half, we just couldn't get the ball anymore. we had to defend well and we had a massive chance. We played against a good team."

James Trafford performance: "It's the story of our team. We have so many people who have so much to learn at this level. We've been in every game for some time now. We give ourselves a chance and we have to believe that we will turn these into results."

Defending better: "Every time we have the ball, I feel we can be dangerous. When we were open, we weren't able to match the one v one quality of some of the players in this league. The solution was to be more compact. The team can't continue putting in good performances and not results. We really prepare well. There's a lot of effort and dedication."

Wilson Odobert: "I said it before the game. Our team and squad has so many little gems that people don't know about yet. Hopefully we get Luca back as soon as possible and Lyle Foster back."

Next game: "Today was a tough game for us. We played against a top eight team. The next game is Everton and I'm sure it's another one to look forward to."

  8. 'Everyone wants to play for this manager'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Wolves 1-1 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest's Harry Toffolo, speaking to Sky Sports: "We were embarrassed on Wednesday. We came here and knew we had to put it right.

"The love and support we've got for the manager, you can see it in abundance out there, you can see how together the group is, how much everyone wants to play for this manager. We're really proud to be part of that performance.

"A point in any Premier League game is a good result away from home. It was a good performance. It's important we pull ourselves in the right direction.

"We showed the support and togetherness we have for this manager."

  9. 'It's about three points'published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to TNT Sports: "Seventy-six minutes really bad game from us. We came here and I think you could see in the beginning Crystal Palace were insecure, really low confidence levels, and I think we could have done so many things and didn't.

"We know that happens from time to time and intense weeks, first half is sometimes a bit tricky. Obviously we wanted to do better in the second half, I felt we were a bit more in control because they only had counter attacks. That's fine of course for them but we lost the ball for a moment and had to defend with a lot of effort.

"They get the red card and we score immediately, the equaliser. From that moment on we played really well. You can have much more problems against ten men and we saw today, subs can make a massive difference.

"Harvey played a wonderful game and scored a wonderful goal. Curtis came on and Gomez, oh my god, Cody and I forgot who else we brought on so we changed the system.

"I told the boys that's the first game I've seen somebody play as bad as we did for 76 minutes and still winning.

"In this period of the year, I said it after Sheffield United, we have to get through this, we need results. Nobody is in for the Oscar award, best football game ever, it's about three points we got them and we are more than happy."

  12. 'We're quite disappointed'published at 17:06 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Brighton 1-1 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, speaking to Match of the Day: "It's definitely a hard earned point coming to Brighton. Not many get a point here. We got a goal and managed the game. We're quite disappointed we didn't hold on."

Game plan: "I just saved their shots! If shots come I try to save them. You dust yourself down and go again. It's one of principles as a team to not have many gaps in between the lines. We got tired at times. We didn't play any different with how we played last week or the week before."

Everton game: "We will debrief the game on Monday and then it's all focus on Everton. Every game is a big game from now until the end of the season."

Wilson Odobert goal: "He's had to be patient. He's only 18 and a top talent. He'll only get better."

  16. 'Neto has had an afternoon off'published at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on BBC 5 Live

This is Manchester United in their own backyard being schooled, with respect, by Bournemouth.

Bournemouth are on a good run but quite frankly it's not been good enough in any way shape or form. It's not a Manchester United team who have peppered Neto's goal.

Neto has had an afternoon off essentially. Bournemouth have looked the better organised, more athletic, more energy. They've carried a threat not good enough from Manchester United and Erik ten Hag this afternoon.

Boos from the few Manchester United fans left at Old Trafford, but the noise is drowned out by the Bournemouth celebrations.

There have been some awful results for Manchester United in recent years and this is about as chastening as they have come.
