    Chance! Big chance for Liverpool.

Martin Odegaard is caught on the ball and Liverpool are four on three all of a sudden.

They work the ball for Mohamed Salah but his effort is blocked and David Raya collects.

  2. 'Arsenal will want to do the same as the first half'published at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think from and Arsenal point of view it's a case of doing the same as the first half and soaking up the pressure and trying to get back in front.

Jurgen Klopp has just dropped his arms to his side when Szobozslai drove forward as if to say 'why is he not shooting?' We know that's the range he likes to shoot and he tried to pass it instead.

Arsenal are approaching this all wrong. We know the way to defend against Liverpool is to deny them space in behind. Arsenal have done the opposite, despite being a goal to the good, and paid the price. Add that to the fact that they're giving the ball away for fun when they go into Liverpool's half and they're asking to lose this.

Femi: Salah v Zinchenko and Saka v Gomez are two key mismatches that could tip this tie.

Liverpool are making Oleksandr Zinchenko a target and he is struggling to cope with Mohamed Salah and the long succession of passes aimed in his direction.

It has been a real source of joy for Liverpool and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will surely be attempting to find a resolution before more damage is done after the break.

  9. 'We will keep doing it for our skipper'published at 18:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Luton 1-0 Newcastle

    Luton Town

Luton's match-winner Andros Townsend on beating Newcastle just a week after captain Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest:

“It feels amazing to get the points but it’s been a tough week. All the chat throughout the week was ‘do it for our captain’. He’s an incredible person. He’s obviously had the issue [a previous cardiac arrest] at Wembley and put his body, his life on the line for the first 16 games.

“So we are doing it for him, we got the three points for him, and we are going to keep doing it for him until if and when he is fit to come back - we are going to keep doing it for our skipper.

“We’ve had it tough at home, we’ve almost got there, almost got over the line a couple of times but conceded leads in the last seconds – it was an emotional, emotional rollercoaster but thankfully we got the win at the end of it.

“Things like this [Lockyer's scare] put things into perspective – we didn’t do much tactical work in the week, it was all about making sure we were in the right frame of mind, making sure we know what we are playing for, knowing that there are more important things than football. In a way it was easy to not feel too much pressure, to not be anxious or worried about where we are in the table.

“It was about, listen, we are alive, we’re healthy, our captain is alive, our captain’s healthy and what will be, will be."

  10. 'Great honour' to be captain in Lockyer absence - Bellpublished at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Luton 1-0 Newcastle

    Luton Town

Luton defender Amari'i Bell, who stood in as skipper for Tom Lockyer as the Hatters captain recovers from a cardiac arrest:

“It meant a lot [to take the armband]. Tom has done a fantastic job captaining the team so it was a great honour to do that in his absence.

“I haven’t seen him yet but the boys have spoken to him and we’ve been updated on how he’s doing – and he’s doing well, thankfully, and that’s all that matters."

On the atmosphere in the win against Newcastle: “The crowd are amazing, every game we play here they spur us on and give us that extra motivation – it’s great that they are always behind us and give us the last push in the dying moments.

On the Boxing Day trip to Sheffield United next up: “It’s a massive game – we are near each other in the table, it’s going to be a six-pointer for both of us. We need to dust ourselves down, recover right and make sure we are ready to go.”

  11. 'We switched off and it cost us'published at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Luton 1-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Match of the Day: "Luton played well, always going to be a difficult game for us, a tough place to come. We switched off from a corner and ultimately it cost us the game.

"No excuses from our side, just on the day we weren't where we needed to be to win the game.

On Jamal Lascalles' injury: "I'm not sure, that will need to be assessed in the next few hours."

On Newcastle's away form: "Our away form hasn't been what we wanted it to be and all we can do is try to respond on the pitch and put it right."

  12. 'A massive decision goes against us'published at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Spurs 2-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche to Premier League Productions about Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goal which was disallowed by VAR: "The referee's decision was what was missing today. We were outstanding after their second goal. We did everything we could to win the game, but today a massive decision goes against us.

"The referee has a great view, linesman has a great view, then VAR referees the game. For me, the game is in a terrible state for fouls and the VAR is finding a way to give fouls. I'm not in there to have a go at refs, but you can't take away referee's instinct."

  13. 'We deserve more respect - it's not fair'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Nottingham 2-3 Bournemouth

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"We are frustrated, sad, upset and angry because of many things that happened in the game. Not a good moment.

"I have seen it over and over again and I still cannot understand it. It's a mistake, I think he should have taken more time for VAR to advise him. We and our fans deserve more respect, it's not fair. He's there, Willy Boly's foot is on the feet of teh Bournemouth player. It's a bad decision for us as a club and especially our fans - they deserve more respect.

"The first half after we came to 10 men, the team struggled, but after half time the response was amazing, fantastic. But we cannot concede such easy goals so that's something we have to work on.

"We have to strengthen every aspect of our game. But the feeling we have right now is frustration about the decision and the result.

"We have to bounce back immediately."

  14. 'The team deserved it'published at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, speaking to BBC Match Of The Day: "It feels like something we have deserved for a while. We keep going and today we kept going. A good team performance and a good result for our fans, too.

"There was a spell in the first half we gave the momentum away and on loose balls and second balls we weren't who were usually, we gave it up. In the second half we were outstanding doing that and that earned a goal. I am happy with the win. My biggest thing is we got three points. The team deserved it."

  15. 'We wanted to do it for Tom'published at 18:28 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Luton 1-0 Newcastle

    Luton Town

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards, speaking to Match of the Day: "I'm an emotional wreck at the moment. Really proud of everybody, it's been a tough week for the football club, it's been the greatest challenge of my football career. No coaching badges prepare you for something like this. I've needed the support of everybody and the players have been incredible. To go and perform as they have after last week, words fail me.

"We wanted to do it for Tom. It wasn't extra motivation, we just wanted to embody what he's about. He's brave, determined, a fighter, and I thought we showed all of those attributes today. It feels strange talking about a football match with everything that's gone on but it's a huge win."

On what Tom Lockyer has said to him: "He text me and said he could feel three points coming on. He's already getting bored sat at home on the sofa. I just told him to chill out and enjoy everyone looking after it."

On the game: "We've had good performances and maybe changed the narrative a bit. We know it's going to be a huge challenge but we're moving in the right way, I like the way we're shaping up at the moment. We were incredibly aggressive against a really good Newcastle team and we've got a good blueprint we'll continue working hard on."

  16. 'We deserved more'published at 18:27 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Burnley

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to MOTD: "Disappointing result for us. We created enough chances in the first half, we didn't score. From the first goal of Burnley we did not perform. It's not really the way we like to perform and play. We deserved more from the game because we created more chances in the first half.

"I think after we conceded the first goal we lost some principles. Clearly we deserved more from the game. We produced more to win the match, and were on the front foot for most of the game. We created three or four chances in the first half. They had two shots on target but the reality is they were much ruthless. This can happen in the Premier League."

  17. 'Solanke saved us at the end'published at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"Happy because we were controlling the game and when we conceded the second one we got very nervous. We were good enough to win and I think luckily for us [Dominic] Solanke saved us at the end.

"Offensively we did well, scored three goals, hit the post and had chances. We made a mistake to concede, too many corners, the first goal was too easy, we lost the ball too easy. We knew we would have chances to score but it becomes dangerous because they were fighting, pushing, they were dangerous and it wasn't easy for us."

On Solanke: "He's been good since day one. We have a very good forward for our system, he's quite complete. He helps us scoring but with other things.

"He has to help us, sustain the high press, keep his position close to the box and if he does this we have the chances.

"The fans have a long way to go home so I hope they enjoyed it. We will see them again in three days."

People saying Arsenal need a better left back than Zinchenko... they have one already and his name is Kieran Tierney!

    Gordon, Dumfries

Think there will be another goal or 2 in this game for both teams. Will be a high scoring 2nd half as both attacks look good but not the defending!
