  1. 'Two brilliant goals'published at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley keeper James Trafford, speaking to MOTD: "I thought we were brilliant. In the first half we weren't at our best. We came in at half-time and the manager and staff gave us some points on how we could really punish them. We scored two brilliant goals.

"I'm delighted with the clean sheet but more delighted with three points. The whole team really values wins and clean sheets. We have never really been short of confidence as a team.

"We believe in the whole process. The performances have been there and it was only a matter of time before the results came."

  2. 'We have to take the positives'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 2-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to PLP: "We didn't have our best of starts but their goalkeeper had a great game and on another day we get a win or a draw.

"We have to take the positives. We played some good football and kept fighting, we never gave up. We keep pushing.

"As long as we keep putting ourselves in those positions to score then hopefully we can take the next [chance].

"It was a slow start from us and we can't really dig anyone out. It is a team effort. If we started better it might have been different. Our fans saw we gave everything to get a result and it's disappointing we didn't get a point but there's positives to take."

You shoot, you score against Forest. Relegation form and woeful defending all season. Nuno needs to tighten up defence as his first task.

I think we can all agree the better team lost at Spurs today

  4. 'It's a hammer blow'published at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Bournemouth

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest's Chris Wood speaking to Sky Sports:

"When you go down to 10 you have to fight and do things that's not in the game plan. We did well to get in the game, unfortunately conceded some goals but fought to get in the game. At 2-2 you can't concede you have to be resilient. It's a hammer blow, it's tough to take."

On sending off: "I haven't seen it back but I thought it was quite harsh at the time. I think the referee has to have a look at it but there's a few incidents I want to see back because some big ones swung against us.

"Character and team sprit is nothing without results."

On adjusting to new manager: "It's football, it happens a lot. You have to take on what the new manager wants, we want to progress and get better. We weren't perfect but we know he has good ideas to get this team better, more positive and winning games."

  5. 'We're buying into manager philosophy'published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth's hat-trick scorer Dominic Solanke speaking to PLP:

"To score that winner late on just makes it so much better.

"I love all goals but maybe the third one was my favourite. I had a meeting yesterday about scoring headers and I've scored two today. So happy to get the win as well.

"I had a great scoring season in the Championship but to do it in the Premier League is another level."

On sending off: "I didn't see second yellow. But to be fair I think there's times things have gone against us even at this ground so if some decisions have gone our way I think we deserved it."

On believing they could win: "We were still attacking in the last minute, it was looking tough at times [to get the win] but we managed to get through.

"Everyone is glued together, the manager philosophy is coming out and we're all buying into it. We have a great team and we're doing well together."

  6. 'We had to show resilience'published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 2-1 Everton

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou speaking to PLP: "I think we started the game well and got ourselves in front. We got a little wasteful with the ball and some of that was because of Everon's pressure. They work hard and make it difficult. We had to show resilience in the second half to get a result.

"We went through that difficult spell where we got ourselves in front but didn't end up putting the game to bed. In the context of everything we're going through with the squad, it's a big three points.

"We started taking too many touches on the ball and slowing the game down which played into their hands [in the second half]."

On Richarlison: "He obviously missed a bit of football with his operation but he's getting stronger every game. His general play has been really good but I know there's more to come."

On goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario's performance: "He has been [strong] pretty much from the first game. Some games we haven't needed a lot and today we did. He's a great shot-stopper and is dealing with a different back four in lots of games. He's got a maturity which helps the team in those moments."

I don't think Arsenal can afford to lose this one. They've got to take something from it.

For one Declan Rice is going to have to have a really big game in midfield.

The side have to perform, have to be brave, have to want to take and dominate the ball. They will have to compete.

  9. 'Recent Anfield disappointments will not impact this Arsenal side'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on Football Focus

The recent record between the teams suggests that it is going to be a lopsided match, but it is far from it.

Of course those stats will play in the minds of the fans but for the players they have not all gone through those results, those negative experiences, disappointment at Anfield.

Arsenal are a legitimate team, and I like the fact that they will be on the front foot at Anfield, which not many teams are able to do there. It should make for a great occasion.

  10. 'Anfield is the next challenge'published at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

The Football News Show: Is Arsenal's midfield too strong for Liverpool?

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past 10 games against Arsenal at Anfield, with the Gunners' last win when Arteta was part of the midfield.

The Spaniard has celebrated four years in charge this week and during that time he's picked up victories at Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham.

"We have done it at Old Trafford, we have done it at Stamford Bridge and many other places where we haven't done it for years," he said.

"This is the next challenge. Go there and win. If you want to be at the top you have to go to those places and be dominant. That's what we're going to try to do.

"The two teams are in a really good moment, really good position, really strong position. They are going to be well placed to win it and to go for it. It's going to be an intense match."

  11. 'Victory would signify which side is the number two behind City'published at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Liverpool v Arsenal (17:30 GMT)

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on Football Focus

We're looking at these two teams as the only, or the real, competition to Manchester City. They have stumbled a bit, there is no getting away from that, but we expect them to come good towards the end of the season.

But having Liverpool and Arsenal in alongside them competing makes for a bit of a different title race. Only one of them can take the three points if they don't draw of course.

But it would be a really significant if one of them could go and take the win and establish themselves as the number two at the other's expense. For Arsenal it would be huge mentally to get a win at Anfield.

If either side win at Anfield they will be top at Christmas, with leaders Arsenal currently one point ahead of third-placed Liverpool.

The team top of the table at Christmas has gone on to win the Premier League in six of the past 10 seasons.

"It is matchday 18. There are 20 games left after. We're not through it if we win. They are not through it if they win," said Klopp. "It's just a super important football game.

"I hadn't really thought about it, I couldn't really care less. I've only been thinking about this game not the rest of the season.

"There might be a moment, I don't know when, March or April maybe, where you think right, six-pointer, you win today and you are out of the way or whatever. That is a long way away and nobody thinks about it.

"They've really got my respect but I want the points anyway."

    Liverpool v Arsenal (17:30 GMT)

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on Football Focus

If I'm being honest I think Jurgen Klopp's words were a little harsh on the fans last week, but he knows he and his team going to need them against Arsenal.

He will want the atmopshere at Anfield to be incredible. A very good Arsenal team is coming to town.

Klopp will know that in recent seasons his team have a very good home record against Arsenal but this feels like a different Arsenal team.

  15. 'Klopp's trying to galvanise the fans'published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Liverpool v Arsenal (17:30 GMT)

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on the Football Daily podcast

For me, when you look at this fixture, these are two teams that obviously respect each other. They both know they are in the title race but you can't rule out Aston Villa and Man City who are still in it as well.

It's a difficult game and I think Jurgen Klopp is doing what most of the great managers do, and he's trying to galvanise the fans into making a great atmosphere.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta likened the Anfield atmosphere to a "washing machine", describing it as an "unbelievable place to go".

His side led 2-0 there last season but ended up drawing 2-2, meaning it is now 11 years since the Gunners last won on Merseyside.

Amazon's 'All or Nothing' documentary also showed Arteta playing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' during training to prepare his players for the challenge in 2021 - but they were thrashed 4-0.

"It is different, different like Old Trafford," he said. "Old Trafford has a beautiful atmosphere as well and something that historically is an unbelievable place to go.

"There are a few in this country. The Emirates is one of them as well.

"I think I explained that sometimes when you don't feel at your best and you feel that they are on top of you and you cannot get out of that washing machine.

"You try to overcome those situations but that's a learning [lesson] - it happened once and it didn't happen again."

  17. Let's give Arsenal 'proper Anfield experience' - Klopppublished at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has encouraged his fans to give Arsenal the "proper Anfield experience" when they meet in the Premier League on Saturday.

After Wednesday's 5-1 win Carabao Cup quarter-final win over West Ham, Klopp said he was "not overly happy with with the atmosphere" during the game.

He also said that fans "not in the right shape" should give their ticket "to somebody else".

Speaking on Friday, he said: "I enjoyed 99.7% of each second in that stadium."

He continued: "I love it to bits. The atmosphere of these people. I am overly happy with everything.

"If we can do better then people show us, and I said something, and that's all. If people want to understand me right, I think it was possible. If not, I cannot change that now.

"I have nothing to say about the atmosphere now.

"I said we'd need Anfield on Saturday and that is 100% true. We have to make sure we make it a proper home game and a proper Anfield experience. That is all I want."

Huge wins for Burnley, Luton and Bournemouth at the bottom of the Premier League and for Spurs at the top then.

Third against first. It's Liverpool v Anfield at Anfield.

  19. 'Agonising for Turner and Forest'published at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Nottm forest 2-3 Bournemouth

    Michael Brown
Former Tottenham midfielder on Final Score

It's a great ball into the box from Harry Toffolo and it is such a difficult header for Dominic Solanke.

For him to be able to get the pace and power that he does onto the finish is excellent, and he guides it past Turner.

It is agonising for Forest, Turner can't get enough on it, his touch only pushes the ball high into the net. What a game.

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Bournemouth

Nuno Espirito Santo looks a little shellshocked at the full-time. He's looking at the ground as he walks off round, occasionally clapping the Forest fans inside the City Ground.

There were encouraging signs there, especially considering they played with 10 players from the 23rd minute onwards.
