And with talisman Callum O'Hare back fit and firing, they might even harbour dreams of another run to the play-offs like last season.

For Birmingham supporters and Wayne Rooney, however, a restless night awaits. Goodnight.

So, to sum up, ex-Aston Villa midfielder Callum O'Hare scored twice as Coventry City beat Wayne Rooney's Birmingham City at the CBS Arena.

"We know we're going through a difficult period. We have to all dig in and stick together to pick up more points.

"We conceded two sloppy goals. I thought we started quite brightly but for the first goal we allowed too much space in the penalty area. Second goal, we've been working on defending the box and we didn't do it well enough.

"We have to be better with the ball in the opposition's half. After their second goal, we were braver and I've had to ask them why we can't do that consistently."

Of course, for every happy Coventry fan tonight, there is an unhappy Birmingham one... or maybe more than one...

Coventry boss Mark Robins on match-winner Callum O'Hare after his first goals since an ACL injury:

"He's a brilliant person, he's superb around the place, a really infectious character.

"When he wasn't around, you felt it. When he came back into the squad, even when he wasn't fit I wanted him around because of his character, his nature, his personality.

"He's worked really hard to get back to where he is at the moment and there's still more to come from him.

"He loves football - he plays in the park still with his old man. I'm absolutely delighted for him."

"I thought we were brilliant from start to finish. The goals that we scored were outstanding.

"We played with intent and found our way down the pitch with some real quality, some really good flowing moves and some really good chances.

"And thankfully we took two. Callum has been fantastic at the heart of it as you would probably expect.

"He has been out for such a long time and worked so hard to get himself back to fitness, so I am absolutely delighted for him, we all are. You can see what he means to the supporters."

Coventry jump up to 14th thanks to tonight's derby triumph.

Hard to see them being dragged into trouble.

Blues, however? Well, they slip to 16th and could be much lower come the end of the weekend depending on how other results go.

"That's what I've been waiting for - all that long rehab, and I can finally say I'm back now. I'm so happy.

"It's been a tough time and all the emotions came out. I'm buzzing. I felt more like myself tonight.

"I don't think my friends [Blues fans] will speak to me for a week but I've still got the boys here! My grandad texts me after every game but I'm not sure he will text me after this one!"

Sky Blues midfielder Ben Sheaf on O'Hare's impact:

"He showed his quality tonight. We've missed him dearly.

"First half we were really good and created some nice stuff, second half it got a messy at times but after the second goal we were pretty safe."

Birmingham have managed one win under Wayne Rooney against a Sheffield Wednesday team who are bottom of the table.

This team has got to find the results that they were achieving under the previous management.

"Wayne has got a lot of things to answer but that was more about player desire - wanting to get hold of it, and show a little bit.

"It took Romelle Donovan to show a bit of leadership, no fear, 'give me the ball'. But you get that with young kids."

You can't help but be really pleased for Callum O'Hare.

You see the number of people congratulating him - it's not just for tonight, they are just so pleased he is back.

He's been such a key player for Coventry over the years and he certainly showed his class tonight.

Jordan Jones did well. Romelle Donovan came on for a short cameo and showed he's got potential.

Five points from nine games is not great by anyone's standards. Something's got to change, in terms of the play or the system. The gaffer's also not getting the rub of the green.

Birmingham need to play out from the back and need more devilment up front. I'm at a bit of a loss as to where we go from here.
