So, England were spooked (sorry) by Belgium and have given themselves an uphill task to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics on behalf of Team GB.

    Next up for England...

The Netherlands at Wembley on December 1

Scotland at Hampden Park on December 5

    Both are must-win games.

BBC commentator, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is hugely damaging for Team GB's hopes of qualifying for the Olympics.

If Belgium win their next two games, there is nothing England can do.

  4. 'Poor individual performances'published at 22:05 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2023

    Eniola Aluko
    Former England forward on ITV4

I think there was some poor individual performances today. Whether it is Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo or Lucy Bronze.

Bronze defensively did not look like she was aggressive in-and-out of possesion.

    That did not help.

  5. 'We've still got a good chance of Olympic qualification'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2023

    England

England defender Lucy Bronze, speaking after the game on ITV4 about Olympic qualification: "We’ve still got a good chance, we play in our next game against Holland at Wembley - a stadium where we like to step up, against a team that we played quite recently.

"We’ll put this game to bed, analyse the game properly and look forward to playing Holland and Scotland. Two really tough games. We’ve left ourselves with a little bit more to do but it’s not impossible."

On Alex Greenwood's head injury: "Not nice to see her in pain. Told that she is doing well and that she is OK. When it’s a head injury it’s not something you can take lightly, the medical team were superb on the pitch, making sure she was safe so I just wish her a good recovery."

Obviously England had to make a change for Alex Greenwood.

Tactically the change might have effected them slightly, but they should still be good enough to defend and to not give away chances.

England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman, speaking after the game on ITV4: "They scored three goals and we scored two. This was a game I think we should have been tighter on the ball. The tempo wasn't great. We did create lots of chances, we dominated the game totally. We lost the ball and they were gone on the counter attack. It was us that made it hard. They played top and played very compact. It's something we have to get out of our game. We have to do better in the final third."

Vulnerable at the back: "We were sloppy on the ball and they were ready for that. They play their long ball and they are gone. We didn't do it good enough today."

Alex Greenwood: "I haven't talked to the medical staff yet. If she's walking then she's alright."

Olympic qualification difficult: "Absolutely. We are aware of that. We have to win by more than one goal against the Netherlands at Wembley. We have put ourselves in a hard position at the moment."

Alessia Russo did not have her shooting boots on.

The chances that she got you are hoping for them to go to her.

And the manager is upset as the chances have to be taken and they do at this level.

England defender Lucy Bronze, speaking after the game on ITV4 on tonight's performance: "We created more chances than the last game but we were sloppier on the ball. Their goals came from our loose passes. Apart from that they didn’t really create anything, particularly in the first half and we had a few chances to put the game to bed if we were a little bit more clinical in front of goal.

"We were pushing at the end, we were unfortunate to give away a penalty. We just couldn't get the ball across the line in the last 30 minutes.

"The other game was almost the opposite. We were so good on the ball, we just didn’t create chances. The whole team needed to step up and obviously there was that big break where Alex had to come off who is probably one of our key players on the ball.

"One of those things. We have to do a lot better. Similar happened against Holland where we gave it away too sloppily, too easily. It’s something we need to work on collectively and individually, we need to look at ourselves and go again."

England have kept just one clean sheet in seven matches. Before the World Cup they were basically unstoppable. A ridiculous winning run while conceding next to no goals.

Where has it gone wrong? Let us know your thoughts.

  11. 'Defence cost us the game'published at 21:54 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2023

    Karen Carney
    Former England midfielder on ITV4

For me the structure of how England defend is not right when we have the ball, the defensive part cost us the game.

Tonight Belgium were a bit more brave and Tessa Wullaert was a threat, she had chances from England's give away a few times.

  12. Olympic qualification hangs in the balancepublished at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2023

So with both matches in Group A1 over this is how things stand.

England, who must top their group to have a chance of qualifying for the 2024 Olympics on behalf of Team GB, drop to third while Belgium leapfrog them into second.

The Lionesses need to win their next matches against the Netherlands and Scotland in December. They've made it very difficult for themselves.

Great Britain will head to Paris if nominated country England reach the Nations League final. However, third place will be enough if Olympics host nation France reach the final.

    FT: Belgium 3-2 England

    Eniola Aluko

It is ruthlessness and the clinical edge that England do not have.

Alessia Russo did not have her best night and she could not find the connection.

I think the way Belgium setup as well it was a completely different setup from Friday and that has caught England out tonight.

    It's all over in Glasgow.

Scotland suffer a 1-0 defeat by the Netherlands, which doesn't help Team GB's hopes of Olympic qualification.

England - Team GB's representatives for qualification - are now third in League A Group 1 and three points adrift of the group leaders the Netherlands.

Only the League A winners progress to the semi-finals, with the finalists joining hosts France as Europe's representatives at Paris 2024.

Lionesses continuing their inconsistent form. Ever since that 2-0 loss to Australia in the friendly they have struggled. A miracle is needed now for England to get something out of the game.

Once again, England had chance after chance and this time they were punished for not taking them.

Belgium executed their game plan to perfection. Using their strength on the counter attack and then never giving up to earn the penalty late on.

A serious blow for England and their hopes of Olympic qualification, though.

Belgium have been brilliant they have dominated when they needed to.

They have used their key moments to score goals at important times.

You could say they have done exceptionally well except from conceding the two goals - they have done phenomenally well.
