That'll do us on another night of madness.

A 6-0 win for England somehow wasn't enough for them as Scotland were humilatied on home turf.

You'll get more reaction and analysis on the site a bit later.

Those teams in the semi-final are very, very good, so it was far from guaranteed that Team GB would have made the Olympics.

Sarina Wiegman is a winner. She wanted to go to another major tournament. She wanted to take Team GB to the Olympics, so it is a tough one for her.

Ultimately she will be proud of how the team performed in the last two games but maybe less pleased with the position that they found themselves in when needing to qualify for the next phase. It's 50/50.

I was a bit confused by [Martinez Losa taking responsibility then backing the game plan]. The damage had been done on the pitch and was nothing to do with how he set his team out? I don't believe that.

I think when you see the changes that were made in the second half - that changed the game as Scotland got more involved and offered more of a threat going forward - I don't think he got it right in terms of the game plan.

I don't think we should have been trying to play out when they had a high press with four or five players poised on the edge of the 18-yard box ready to pounce.

It put the players under pressure. We saw players lose confidence, and we didn't need that defensively.

  5. 'I want to apologise to the Scotland fans'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2023

    Scotland

Scotland head coach Pedro Martinez Losa speaking to BBC Scotland: "Very disappointed and very frustrated. I want to apologise to the fans. This is not the level we expected. Especially in the first half, we totally lost concentration. I also give credit to England, I thought they were excellent. We had chances to get back in the game but it was very difficult. It was a tough night for our players. I want to take full responsibility because I know how hard the players work for us but today it was not enough."

On pushing forward despite the heavy defeat: "I think we have been improving game by game. We are building our own style. Today was not a question of the game plan - I think the game plan was okay - it was about the execution and it was a question of how the opponent overcame the difficulties of the game and the desire they put into the result. One hundred percent, we are a group united between the players and the staff. This is a setback of course, but football always bring you to these moments and we must rebuild for the next stage and the Euros."

On all six Nations League fixtures: "We felt we were very close in some games but today we felt very far. We must reset and the players must reset. We have another opportunity in February to focus on qualification for the Euros."

First and foremost Sarina Wiegman will be very proud of this team.

We can look back at the other games that England have played in this Nations League campaign, and discuss the ifs and the buts, but I am really proud of this group of players.

It is a tough one. They scored six goals tonight and they still didn't top the group. It is just unbelievable!

  8. 'Small margins. It wasn't meant to be.'published at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2023

    England

England forward Beth Mead speaking to BBC One: "Devastated. We did everything we possibly could on the pitch tonight. I thought the team were incredible. Unfortunately it wasn't in our hands, the Netherlands got the four goals, so fair play to them but obviously devastated to miss out on such small margins.

On if the players were aware of the situation in the other game: "Yes we made sure we knew that the information was fed into us, Sarina made sure we knew what was happening, and we knew what we were supposed to do. We got the goals late on, we thought we had maybe gotten over the line but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

That's football. Small margins. Extra time and late goals happened in both games. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

On how to process the situation: It's a tough one, maybe give us the rest of the night at least. The girls have worked so hard and we were incredible in this camp. We've done ourselves proud in both games. Unfortunately it was out of our hands, maybe we let ourselves down earlier on in the competition. But we will keep working hard, come back stronger and I am excited to see what this team is about."

An incredible finish to the game.

It looked to be the goal England needed and then it was so cruelly taken away from them in the dying moments.

But a match that, as a Scotland fan, you'll want to forget.

To play two games and win both and almost feel like they have suffered two defeats is incredible.

To mount a comeback from 2-0 down to win and feel like it was a defeat versus Netherlands. Tonight they scored six goals, won this game, have beaten Scotland quite comfortably really, and they look so dejected.

Ultimately it was just not enough.

I think Pedro himself will have an assessment of his own tactics and how he prepares for games. He has to take responsibility of that.

The Olympics is another huge tournament that every top player wants to be part of. It is a huge deal in the women's game, it is not comparable to the mens.

These England players would have wanted to be there to represent Team GB, and you can see the huge disappointment on the faces of the team after hearing that final result.
