Generously, Norway head coach Stale Solbakken gives a considered answer when I ask him how he thinks Scotland might fare at the Euros next summer.

While he feels Norway were "the better team" here at Hampden tonight, he's full of praise for Scotland and boss Steve Clarke.

"He's a great coach with disciplined players. They don't pretend to be anything they're not. They'll be a handful for everyone, they can play two systems.

"There will be no easy games for those who're going to play Scotland [at next year's Euros in Germany]."

  3. Clarke on his Scotland 'evolution'published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-3 Norway

More from Scotland boss Steve Clarke, who adds on Viaplay: "I spoke very calmly and quietly at half time... I asked them to play with more intensity. We played the first half like a testimonial, like 'look at us, we're a great team, we've qualified for Germany'.

"It's not us, it's not Scotland. We have to play on the front foot and play aggressive, especially at home. We did it much better second half, it was a much better performance. That's why it was so disappointing to concede at the end, but we'll learn from that.

"This group of players have shown the Tartan Army and the people of Scotland they want to turn up and do well. I want to be competitive every time we enter the pitch. We have to be like that if we want to consistently qualify for major tournaments.

"When I looked at the group, I had to identify a core group - I was going to pick them all the time, no matter what, even if weren't playing for their clubs. I've been pretty consistent in selection because the same message is passed to the players. We can change four or five around the periphery but keeping that core group together was key.

"We tweaked the system. I had a lot of time to think during Covid. I sat at home and thought: 'How can we tighten up at the back? How do we stop conceding goals?'.

"I came up with the back three idea, which started with Scott McTominay there. We had to find a way of playing that was different, that could become our identity. We've built on that, brought in different types of players. It's been an evolution from there.

"I've not even thought about [the final squad]. There are six months of football to play. Something will happen that you're not expecting and that's the nature of football. I won't lose any sleep over it in January, February. Maybe in March, I'll start thinking of getting the squad down to 23."

  5. 'Fantastic campaign overall' - Clarkepublished at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-3 Norway

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke tells Viaplay: "It was a strange game, strange atmosphere. You don't get many 3-3 draws in international football.

"Overall - the group, the performance, the lads - fantastic to qualify in the manner we did. We put ourselves in a great position and got over the line with two games to spare, which turned out to be two difficult games for us.

"It was nice at the end. I didn't smile too much because I was still fuming about the third goal that we conceded - that's just the way I'm made up. But it's not a night to over-analyse. Maybe we can analyse the campaign."

Right, someone with far more time on their hands and a bigger brain then me has worked out the projected pots for the draw here, external.

Scotland look to be in pot three. On paper, that doesn't look like the worst thing?

I think John McGinn is everything Steve Clarke wants his team to epitomise.

His effort in every match is unquestionable, he is brave, he is fearless. I just love him as a football player.

I remember watching him when he was about 15 years of age when he was a skinny little kid and I keep wondering how he got to the player he is now - he is so powerful.

He is a really, really good footballer and such a competitor.

  13. 'We can be really proud' - Armstrongpublished at 22:05 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-3 Norway

Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong tells Viaplay: "It was nice to show our appreciation for the fans. It was an amazing atmosphere, every time we play here it's so special. We were unlucky not to finish with the win but we can be really proud of what we've done so far.

"We were just having an internal chat about the camp as a whole, showing appreciation for each other. It's not easy qualifying for tournaments, so it was the whole group - staff, coaches, players.

"We need to appreciate and enjoy these big moments. We want to make it something more consistent.

"You just have to perform at your club and hope to get the call from Scotland. Everyone wants to be part of the squad and go to major tournaments, but that's for the manager to call.

"Every boy's dream is to play for Scotland at a major tournament. The one a few years back was different because of Covid. To experience it with the full amount of fans there is everyone's dream."

The game away to Norway looked beyond us at times, but to have the courage, spirit and energy to get the three points - that's when I said we are going to qualify.

It has been a fabulous campaign, full praise for the manager and the team spirit.

There are no egos in the dressing room and I think it is just a wonderful time for the players, managers and everyone associated with the national team.

Opta are doing their best to kill the buzz here:

    • Scotland have now failed to win in their last three games in Euro qualifying, their longest winless streak since at least 2012.
    • Scotland have conceded more than twice in five consecutive internationals for the first time since a run of seven from May 1960 to April 1961.

Right, enough of that. Back to the nice stuff.

Again, other Glasgow-based bars are available - but that appeared to be the venue of choice for the Scotland lads after last month's qualification, even though they tried to pretend it didn't happen...

Bit of a mad stat, this.

Scotland have both scored and conceded three or more goals in a match for the first time since May 1969, a 5-3 win over Wales.
