Can Liverpool get back to challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title after last season’s disappointing fifth-placed finish?

The game between the two rivals at 12:30 GMT on Saturday will provide more of an answer on that but Reds right-back Trent-Alexander Arnold seems to think so.

"We are in a really strong position and results and form-wise we are doing enough to stay as close as possible to the top of the table,” said the England international.

"So far we've performed in a way that is how you would expect someone who can win the league to perform and if we carry this on, we should be in and around it come May.

"If that wasn't the case, I would be here saying, 'I want to get back in the top four'. Because, genuinely, there is nothing wrong with that for this team, a team that has just finished outside the Champions League places.

"There is a rebuild going on, a lot of senior players have left, and it would be very normal to say, 'Get back in the top four and push on from there.' But it [challenging for the title] is something that we believe we can achieve.

"If it doesn't happen, we have ourselves to blame. We have built a great foundation, it is just about consistency.

"The hardest thing in football is consistently winning games but we have shown we are more than capable of passing [that test]."

    "Beyond nervous."

I love that, it feels like the title race arrives earlier every year.

It's a properly big game on Saturday. The biggest of the season so far I reckon.

Expecting the worst but hoping for the best from the City game. Would absolutely tear your hand off for a draw too. What is certain is that I am absolutely bricking it for this game, I am beyond nervous.

  5. Big test for Liverpoolpublished at 11:09 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2023

Man City v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

I don’t imagine there will be too much disappointment at another international break coming to a close but, if there is, what a humdinger we’ve got to get us back in the Premier League vibe.

Liverpool, who are second in the Premier League, travel to top-flight leaders and champions Manchester City for the early kick-off on Saturday as they renew their rivalry for a game which usually serves up plenty of action and excitement.

It’s this season’s third 12:30 k/o for the Reds, who have won the previous two against Wolves and Everton, and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has already criticised having it on so early following an international break. The game will be City’s first 12:30 k/o of the campaign.

City beat Liverpool 4-1 when they last played in the league in April but, after the Anfield club’s midfield rebuild in the summer, can Klopp’s side get back to being the main challengers to rival boss Pep Guardiola’s side? Also, how is the Reds squad looking after the international break?

On the wider football front, what did Klopp make of Everton’s 10-point deduction? We'll hopefully find out when the Liverpool boss does his pre-match news conference from 13.30 GMT.

  6. Clubs remind fans to be respectfulpublished at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2023

Manchester City versus Liverpool has now become that fixture that you look for first when the fixtures are announced along with derby days, Boxing day, the season opener and the final day.

The reason behind that is due to the quality on the pitch, it's something to enjoy.

However, such competitiveness from the teams in their hunt for silverware has also brought out the worst in a minority of fans in recent seasons.

Both clubs have therefore reached out to supporters ahead Saturday's match at Etihad Stadium to remind them to be respectful.

In an email to their fans, Manchester City have, in line with Premier League guidance at every game, continued to mention that there is a zero-tolerance approach to the likes of 'abusive tragedy-related comments, chanting, or gesture-making'.

Liverpool have had their allocation reduced slightly from 3,000 to 2,780 based on safety and factors around the game.

Like, Manchester City, their message to supporters references Premier League protocol but also mentions 'object throwing' follows previous incidents.

A familiar top two clash as Sam says is correct. But have Arsenal something to say now about who is in that top two?

Manchester City and Liverpool have had plenty of classic races for the title over recent years - one point separating them in both 2021-22 and 2018-19.

    Let us know.

Sam: Not a bad way to kickstart the Premier League return with a familiar top two clash. But whenever City play LFC, Everton always seem to play United on the same weekend.

Liverpool's most recent Etihad win away from the Premier League was in the 2018 Champions League.

The Reds won 2-1 that day and reached a first Champions League semi-final for 10 years. Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino were among the goals.

  10. 'The pressure is on both teams now to get a result'published at 10:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2023

Man City v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

Manchester City against Liverpool is always an exciting fixture and what a game of football we are hopefully going to see with the tactics between the two managers.

Liverpool often do better at times against City. City need to react and keep the ball and be brave. The managers are only getting two days with the players after the international break and have to be really careful with what they can actually do for the early kick-off.

These players know their jobs so well and it should be a really wonderful game. The squad selections will all depend on the load and how many minutes were played. They will take the risk and roll the dice I’m sure because it’s an adrenaline-type game. If anyone has a knock that’s a different situation, but if it’s just a bit of fatigue and a bit of travelling, this is the game everyone is looking forward to.

As soon as we end the international break everyone is asking when is that game? City v Liverpool, 12:30, that’s the game. The pressure is on both teams now to get a result.

I would love another 4-4 game like we saw from City against Chelsea, but that was a different City performance and will they do that and open up against this Liverpool side? I’m not so sure. They will want more control.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Premier League clubs voting against a temporary ban on related-party loans: "You say Newcastle were favoured but it was a Premier League vote.

"We're not the only club involved in that vote. I think the majority of the Premier League and other clubs around the world [benefit] so it's not solely on us, I don't think.

"Newcastle, our club, had a view. We voted in a way, a way that we're allowed to, and the vote came out on the side that it did.

"I think just from my dealings with it, we're very relaxed on it. It's not the be-all and end-all for us.

"We've got a squad that we really like. Now if we get players fit before January then the need to recruit will become much less intense for us."

  17. Brentford are really effective and well coached - Artetapublished at 09:49 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2023

Brentford v Arsenal (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

  18. 'Trippier is fine' to face Chelseapublished at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2023

Newcastle v Chelsea (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

On team news for Saturday's match with Chelsea: "Fabian [Schär] was more precautionary rather than any injury, we saw him yesterday – he seemed good. Miggy [Miguel Almiron] has worked really well since his hamstring. Kieran [Trippier] is fine, he has trained with us since his return from England. We will check on Sean [Longstaff] before tomorrow."

"Our home form has been very strong - we have had some good results against some top sides. You look back at our last league game here against Arsenal, it was a very strong performance, full of discipline and quality. Another performance and atmosphere like that would be more than welcome. There is a determination to put the Bournemouth result to bed."

  19. Brentford v Arsenalpublished at 09:34 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2023

    Chris Sutton's predictions

    chris sutton banner

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

On the face of it, Brentford got walloped 3-0 at Liverpool last time out but look past the scoreline and they were competitive for long periods of that game.

So, this is going to be far from easy for Arsenal. They won here at the start of last season, but the Bees' home form is very strong and we know how well-balanced they are, and how awkward they are are to play against.

As I've said, City and Liverpool are my top two this season but I don't think Arsenal will be too far behind in third and, if they want to push for the title again, they know they need to win games like this one.

    Barry Can't Swim's prediction: 2-2

This is a bit of a rogue one but I might go for a draw here, with a few goals. Brentford can be unreal some weeks but they don't always show up.

  20. Postpublished at 09:27 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2023

Brentford v Arsenal (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Arsenal

Our first news conference is set to get under way shortly with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to the media before his side's trip to Brentford on Saturday.

Arteta has been given until today to respond to his Football Association charge for comments he made after Arsenal's defeat by Newcastle earlier this month.

He said the VAR decision not to rule out Anthony Gordon's goal in his side's 1-0 defeat at St James' Park was "an absolute disgrace".

Will he have something to say on this? We will bring you all the updates.
