Roberto Martinez's Portugal had a 100% win record in qualifying

Portugal were the only nation to win all of their qualifiers. They scored 36 goals and concedes just twice in their 10 wins.

World Cup runners-up France won their first seven but were held to a 2-2 draw by Greece in their final game.

The other unbeaten sides were England, Belgium, Hungary and Romania.

We know all about Spain, who won their final six games in qualifying to ensure they finished above Scotland.

    Dunno, but I'm feelin' something.

  3. 'A day Scotland has waited 26 years for'published at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

The last time Scotland's name came out of a hat, or a bowl, at a draw for the finals of a major championship, Sepp Blatter was running the Fifa show.

It was December 1997 and 38,000 people fetched up at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille to watch.

True, Scotland made the last Euros, but when the draw was made they hadn't yet qualified. They were one of four countries still vying to be Play-off Winner C.

In France, ahead of the 1998 World Cup, the nation's name was in lights on the night, just as it will be on Saturday in Hamburg when we'll find out who Steve Clarke's boys will be going up against next summer.

And when and where. More than a quarter of a century has passed since Scotland has had such a day to look forward to and if it comes anywhere close to matching the 1997 version for drama and hilarity then it will have done well.

Our mates at Nielsen's Gracenote have been feeding us stats for this draw.

They say that Scotland's chances of making it through the groups currently stand at over 60%.

Imagine that could change depending on the draw.

And, wait for it, they reckon Scotland have a 1% chance of winning the entire thing...

Hamburg in all its glory. Looks nice with a spot of snow, doesn't it?

It's one of 10 host cities next summer and is the destination for the draw.

The Elbphilharmonie concert hall is the venue today.

A bit earlier on Sportsound, Tom English shared his best and worst case scenarios.

Fair to say he has no interest in Scotland drawing England again.

There's real excitement and anticipation in the air here. I'm at the red carpet waiting for big names to walk past me.

It's an impressive set-up. Cameras everywhere.

Steve Clarke and SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell are here, hopefully we'll grab a word with them at some point.

Fingers crossed the draw is kind to us.

Who would've thought it? Not me. We're all just living version of that Paul Rudd meme at present.

For the first time in TWENTY-SIX years, Scotland are in a draw for a major finals. Like, properly.

Yep, they were at the last Euros, but they were one of four nations hoping to become Play-off Winner C.

This time, there's none of that nonsense. Drink it in.
