The second half continues as much of the first was played, with Wales seeing plenty of the ball.

Some neat approach play sets up Angharad James for a shot inside the Icelandic box, but the Tottenham midfielder blazes over.

Wales get the second half started.

A big 45 minutes to come for Gemma Grainger's side, who need to score three goals to have a realistic chance of preserving their top-tier Nations League status.

    Katie is exactly right.

Right up until the goal and after the goal, Wales were the team on top.

Their press has been sensational, you really have to give them credit, they have obviously worked on it during the week.

They are winning the ball back in dangerous areas, they just haven't got that clinical edge that we have seen at the other end.

Iceland got one chance and it's really good centre-forward play to poke it into the goal.

It's been a posititve performance but really disappointing to find ourselves one goal down.

    Katie Sherwood
Former Wales midfielder on MOTD Wales

Up until the goal they were in complete control.

Wales were creating chances, pressing Iceland, really frustrating them and winning the ball back in great areas.

It was just that one error again when they haven't stopped the cross and have let Iceland back into the game.

It's a backhanded compliment to Jess Fishlock.

Should the referee have done more? Yes. We don't want any nasty tackles or anything like that and she does need a bit of protection.

To me it looks like Iceland have targeted Jess Fishlock a little bit because they know she's a creative player and she can unlock a defence.

It has been really physical, really aggressive.

Jess definitely knows she has been in a game this half.

The penalty, you hope it's given. But you understand why it hasn't been.

As a forward you want to see it given, but It's a grey area one.

  9. HALF-TIME - Wales 0-1 Icelandpublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

Wales will wonder how they're trailing after that first half.

They were on top throughout and squandered several chances, whereas Iceland took theirs.

Wales now need to score at least three goals if they are to have a realistic chance of avoiding relegation from their top-tier Nations League group.

    Nia Jones
Former Wales international on MOTD Wales

There's no real intent on the press.

They're [Iceland] able, time and time again, to get the ball into the box.

They're strong in the air, they're physical, they like the aerial contest.

Wales can't allow it to happen.

  12. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Wales 0-1 Iceland

Jess Fishlock thinks she's in but is flagged offside after Kayleigh Green was a little too late with her cross.

This is turning into quite a frustrating half for Wales, as well as they've played.

    Wales 0-1 Iceland

Jess Fishlock is on the receiving end of another foul, and the result is a Wales free-kick some 40 yards out.

Rachel Rowe launches it into the Icelandic box but it's just too far for Gemma Evans to hook back across goal.

It is unfortunate for Wales, but this is what we're talking about in terms of being clinical in front of goal.

Iceland have had one, maybe two chances, and Wales find themselves 1-0 down.

It's now how they respond. They need to play with intensity and get a goal in the next five minutes in order to be able to compete.

    Close again for Wales!

Sophie Ingle finds Jess Fishlock, who strikes powerfully from 20 yards but her shot is well palmed away by Iceland keeper Telma Ivarsdottir.

That is almost an absolute screamer from Angharad James.

Rachel Rowe's corner is cleared but only as far as James, who makes the sweetest connection with her 20-yard volley but it dips just wide.

  18. 'Wales looked frozen'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Wales 0-1 Iceland

    Nia Jones
Former Wales international on MOTD Wales

Wales looked frozen still. I can't believe what's just happened.

They have been so on top.

The arriving midfielder was totally free to pick her head up and pick a pass out.

Could Olivia Clark have come and claimed it? There wasn't a lot Hayley Ladd could do.

  19. Postpublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Wales 0-1 Iceland

Given how well Wales were playing and how the Cardiff City Stadium crowd were getting behind them, that Iceland goal has rather taken the wind out of everyone's sails from a Welsh perspective.

    Simon Davies
    BBC commentator on MOTD Wales

My word, Wales have been punished from nowhere and that is hugely disappointing.

We can talk about the penalty incident but it's all academic now - Wales essentially need three goals here.

They must not panic, though, as there is a lot of football to be played.
