I do a lot of "it is cold" content, so tonight I'll simply tell you I'm wearing two coats and a blanket that is causing great amusement among my colleagues.

Ceri Holland is straight into the action with a run forward on Wales' right.

The ball then falls to Jess Fishlock and, from around 25 yards out, the Wales midfielder lets fly with a shot which sails over the bar.

This is where we deserve to be, but what we have to realise is the gulf is still enormous.

These European teams are still 10 years ahead of us physically, technically, tactically. However we deserve to be here and the only way to learn is to be in amongst them.

I think there is an external pressure [to win], but I think from within the group and knowing them as I do, these are the sort of games they thrive on.

If you look at the group as a whole, finishing third would have been the aim.

If Wales needed any extra motivation tonight, they've had it in the form of a team talk from former men's manager Chris Coleman.

Coleman managed Wales from 2012 to 2017, overcoming a difficult start to his tenure to lead the team to Euro 2016 - their first major finals since the 1958 World Cup - where Wales soared to the semi-finals.

"We were fortunate enough to spend some time with Chris Coleman and talked to him about some of the work he did with the men's team because that journey is so similar to ours," said Gemma Grainger.

"For Chris to speak to the girls was great. He talked around when the team suffered and what that allowed them to do with 'Together Stronger'.

"Mindset and mentality is a real focus for us. He talked about the criticism they had and how that is a natural part of when a team is successful."

Wales have faced plenty of criticism during this Nations League campaign, in which they've failed to pick up a point and suffered two 5-1 thrashings.

However, captain Sophie Ingle believes Wales are benefitting from competing against top-tier sides, with Germany and Denmark currently battling to win the group.

"We don't listen too much to our critics. We know in house what we are trying to do," Ingle said.

"We are preparing for trying to qualify for the Euros and trying to stay in League A of the Nations League.

"We are playing against top-tier opposition in every game and I think people in the outside world tend to forget that, they play in major tournaments year in and year out.

"We want to keep playing the top teams, that's where you test yourself.

"We are learning a lot at the moment, it is only benefitting us."

Hayley Ladd is not the only Wales player at Manchester United these days.

Her fellow Wales defender Gemma Evans says she is “still striving” and there is “a lot more to come” following her move to United this season.

Evans, who wins her 58th cap against Iceland tonight, tells BBC Match of the Day Wales that her football career is a dream come true.

From a confidence perspective this campaign has been challenging, but actually Wales will have learned loads.

You learn you haven't got time on the ball that you might have in the domestic league, half a yard too early or late and you could be punished with a goal.

Gemma Grainger definitely would have learned lots about the players who can really put their hand up and withstand that pressure against the top dogs.

  13. Iceland game ideal Euro 2025 preparation, says Graingerpublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Wales v Iceland (19:15 GMT)

As important as tonight’s game is, it’s not all about the here and now.

For Wales, this campaign is about testing themselves against some of Europe’s best teams.

Manager Gemma Grainger says Wales’ encounter with Iceland is "ideal" preparation for her side should they qualify for Euro 2025.

Iceland and Wales are battling to avoid relegation from the top tier of the Nations League but Grainger believes the knockout nature of this match - which will be followed next Tuesday by the visit of Germany to Swansea - will replicate major tournament football, which the manager hopes her side can experience for the first time in 2025.

  16. Ingle record down to 'hard work and sacrifice'published at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Wales v Iceland (19:15 GMT)

If Wales are to win tonight, you'd think captain Sophie Ingle will play a starring role – and she comes into the game fresh from making history.

Ingle broke the record for the number of Women’s Super League appearances earlier this month when playing for Chelsea against Liverpool.

The Wales skipper says her new top-flight benchmark of 184 games is a result of years of hard work, determination and sacrifice.

It's about regrouping now after a few heavy defeats.

It was a better performance against Denmark which will put Wales in better stead going into the Iceland game.

It's about being clinical, that's why we're not winning games. Wales just need to be able to take their chances in the final third.

Gemma GraingerImage source, Huw Evans Picture Agency

The basic equation for Wales tonight is simple. They need to beat Iceland to have a chance of staying in the top flight of the Nations League.

To recap, if Wales win by two goals tonight, they will overtake Iceland in the table and will then need to match Iceland’s result against Denmark in the final round of matches on Tuesday 0 when Gemma Grainger's side face Germany - to finish third.

If Wales win by only a single goal, they will stay bottom of the group as they have an inferior goal difference. They’ll then have to better Iceland’s result on Tuesday to avoid relegation.

If both they and Iceland lose their final games, Wales will need to hope for a four-goal swing on goal difference to survive.

If Wales fail to win tonight, they will be relegated. A draw isn’t enough because if teams finish level on points, the tie-breaker is the head-to-head record (Wales lost 1-0 to Iceland in Reykjavik in September).

Finish third in Group A3 and Wales will play a two-legged relegation play-off against a team finishing second in League B in February.
