The only way to change behaviours at club and the players is to deduct points. Fines are a waste of time.

The events in Turkey were shameful. Without honest, hardworking officials there would be no football for any of us. Everyone involved needs to rethink their attitudes - players, officials, owners, even fans. There's too much toxicity in our beautiful game, too much cheating and disrespect. If we don't honour it, we will lose it. If winning and financial reward is more important than the sport itself, we are in big trouble.

  3. 'No place for violence in football' - Fifa chiefpublished at 08:54 GMT 12 December 2023
    Breaking

This just in from Fifa chief Gianni Infantino after a Turkish referee was punched to the ground.

"There is absolutely no place for violence in football, on or off the field. Events following the Turkish Süper Lig match between MKE Ankaragücü and Çaykur Rizespor are totally unacceptable and have no place in our sport or society," he said.

"Without match officials there is no football. Referees, players, fans and staff have to be safe and secure to enjoy the game, and I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is strictly implemented and respected at all levels."

Referees everywhere should refuse to officiate this weekend in solidarity. Perhaps then people will remember we have no game without them.

  5. 'Bayern made their pitch early and got their man'published at 08:41 GMT 12 December 2023

Harry Kane has scored six goals at Old Trafford. Most recently, he netted twice for England in their seven-goal hammering of North Macedonia in June.

He also got two in Tottenham's famous 6-1 win in 2020. Manchester United fans do not need to be reminded of the striker's quality, which is why so many of them felt Kane should have been the club's number one transfer target in the summer.

BBC Sport has previously been told the club struggle to do 'hard' deals.

In this instance, there was certainly no guarantee Levy would sell to a direct rival. Even Kane's move to Bayern was dragged out, to the extent of a delay being encountered just as the forward was about to fly to Germany to complete his move.

But there was a feeling in the game that Tottenham's former owner Joe Lewis had decided Kane would not be allowed to go into the final year of his contract, and that if the striker didn't sign a new one, he would be sold.

Bayern made their pitch early and eventually got their man.

Only way to stop abuse of referees is to start punishing it. Only captains are allowed to speak to the referee. Players who crowd around the referee get yellow cards. Shouting at the referee is a red card. Pushing the referee is a longer suspension and a fine for the club. Punching the referee is physical assault and should be a criminal charge.

  7. Kane set for Man Utd showdownpublished at 08:29 GMT 12 December 2023

There is a subtle irony in Harry Kane's first club game in England since signing for Bayern Munich being against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

United were linked with Kane virtually every summer. Many thought when the 30-year-old finally left Tottenham, that is where he would end up.

    But the move never happened.

Instead, it was Bayern who pushed and pushed and eventually persuaded Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to let Kane go in August.

United backed away, feeling that executing the transfer would be too expensive, too difficult and would take too long. Instead they signed Rasmus Hojlund.

Comparisons between Kane and the 20-year-old Denmark forward are unfair.

One is an experienced, proven goalscorer, the other is a youngster of huge potential, just making his way in the game.

  9. 'Inconsistent' Utd can beat anyone - Ten Hagpublished at 08:18 GMT 12 December 2023

Manager Erik Ten Hag says Manchester United can "beat any opponent" as they need to beat Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League last 16.

United must win Tuesday's game and hope Copenhagen draw with Galatasaray in order to progress from Group A.

"We are not consistent but we have good performances," he said. "If we are in the right spirit, we are able to beat any opponent."

Defender Victor Lindelof remains an injury doubt for United.

A draw against Bayern would see them finish third and enter the Europa League group stage, if Galatasaray's game against Copenhagen does not end in a draw.

  10. 'No-one can really know which United will turn up'published at 08:13 GMT 12 December 2023

Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

It was the final answer of the news conference when Scott McTominay used the word "toxic". In defending the current United manager, he admitted the dressing room had turned against previous ones.

The assumption must be if it has happened before, it can happen again.

Manchester United have an enormous week ahead of them. Bayern Munich, followed by Liverpool on Sunday. The difference in mood between two victories and two defeats is vast.

Sadly for Ten Hag, his solution for the maddening inconsistency that has blighted United this season, the return of personnel, will not be solved in days. Lisandro Martinez, in particular, is not expected to be back before Christmas.

For all the positive elements of their performance against Galatasaray, they did not win, and the triumph against Chelsea last week has been put into perspective by the Blues' dismal display at Goodison Park on Sunday.

No-one can really know which United will turn up at Old Trafford on Tuesday. But, after their 5-1 defeat by Frankfurt at the weekend, everyone can be pretty sure that Bayern - their status as group winners already assured - will be hugely motivated.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay says 'it's been a little toxic at times'.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay says the atmosphere under Erik Ten Hag is not "a little bit toxic" - as it has been under previous managers.

The pressure on Ten Hag was eased by Wednesday's win over Chelsea, but has been increased again after a limp performance in Saturday's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.

United must now beat Bayern Munich on Tuesday and hope Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League.

"It is the players' responsibility first and foremost, the players know that as well," said McTominay pre-match.

"We have had many amazing players over that time and I feel like we are at the stage where we have big characters in the dressing room.

"It is just not the case like [with] some of the other managers where it has been a little bit toxic at times.

"The boys are firmly behind the manager and that is the be all and end all. I have said that in many other interviews. That is the way it will remain.

"We have got amazing coaching staff as well. So, yes, people can get lost in translation and get carried away with what the players think and what they say behind closed doors - we just want to do well for the football club and it is as simple as that."

A reminder of that news from Turkey where domestic football has been suspended after a referee was punched to the ground by a club president following a top-flight game on Monday.

Halil Umut Meler was struck by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca, who ran on to the pitch after his team conceded a 97th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 Super Lig draw with Caykur Rizespor.

"The matches in all leagues have been postponed indefinitely," Turkish FA [TFF] chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi said in a news conference.

"This attack is a night of shame for Turkish football," he added.

Meler received several blows from others as he lay on the turf and suffered injuries including a minor fracture.
